1968 EASTERNER Pride in Eastside because we are Eastside. EASTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL BUTLER, INDIANA VOLUME 5 “Pride in Eastside” Because We are Eastside Following is the winning essay, submitted by the National Honor So- ciety, during Pride in Eastside Week. It was chosen for this page be- cause it represents best the theme of the 1968 EASTERNER. There seems to be an epidemic spreading at Eastside. Like a cold, it's spreading to everyone. Like the measles, everyone is breaking out with it. Like the mumps, everyone is swelling with it. Like the seven yearitch, it keeps everyone on the move. What is this thing that is caus- ing people to stay after school and clean rooms and make signs? Why, it’s pride. Everyone, well, almost everyone, seems to have some phase of it and this is only the beginning. There is more talk of later activities and fun-filled events . Are you a victim? Check yourself. Do you attend ball games and yell? Do you participate in one or more of the active clubs in our school? Do you work hard and cooperate with your teachers? If you do, you have a case of pride. Since this is such a widespread epidemic at Eastside, it appearsthat there can be no cure. Let's see if we can give it to EVERY- ONE! We want no cure! Long live Pride in Eastside! 2 Table of Contents Activities September to February...............................5 Sports Summer and Fall........................................21 Administration and Faculty....................................29 Seniors ..................................................... 41 Underclassmen.................................................57 Junior High...................................................69 Organizations.................................................83 Sports: Winter and Spring....................................105 Activities: March to May.....................................119 Advertising..................................................132 3 1967-68 Schedule of Events September 6 School Convenes September 15 Junior Magazine Sales Begin September 19 Miss Eastside Convocation October 3 Dr. Charles King Convocation October 6 First Annual Homecoming Talent Show October 7 Homecoming October 9 Sex Education Convo--Mr. Frank Liddle October 20 Cross Country Sectional October 26-29 Teachers' Institute November 7 Tragedy on Wheels Convocation November 10-11 The Sound of Music November 14 National Honor Society Induction Nobember 16 First Basketball Open House November 22 Basketball Season Opens--Angola Here November 23-26 Thanksgiving Vacation December 2 Senior Class Party--Silvermoon December 12 Christmas Concert December 15 Richmond High School Orchestra Convo December 20 Sophomores Receive Class Rings December 22 Christmas Vacation Begins December 27-28 Holiday Tourney--Bishop Dwenger January 2 School Reconvenes January 6 Booster Block New Year's Dance January 20 Lettermen's Fish Fry January 25 WOWO Air Aces vs. Faculty Basketball February 1 Indiana Central College Choir Convo February 3 Eastside hosts NISBOVA Instrumental February 16 F.H.A. INTRODUCING A MAJOR HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR: THE SEVENTY-FOUR PIECE RICHMOND SENIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA CONDUCTED BY RALPH BURKHARDT Members of the Richmond Senior High School Orchestra arrive the night before they are to give a concert at Eastside on Decem- ber 15. New friends were quickly made with Eastside Chorus and Band students, with whom they were housed. Jackie Hook demonstrates Eastside hospitality to her guests. From Victory at Sea to the Hal- lelujah Chorus, members of the Richmond Orchestra delightfully entertained Eastside students. Conductor Ralph Burkhardt asks the members of the Orchestra who had been students of Eastside music teachers Richard and Paula Foster, formerly of Richmond, to stand. Convocations Eastsiders had a new experience in the all-day convocation. The speaker was Dr. Frank Liddle. The topic-- Sex Education. Dr. Liddle spoke to the group as a whole, to the girls individually and to the boys individually. While one group was in session, the other group was divided according to classes and these smaller groups met in discussion groups with counselors. This expereince added knowledge and cleared miscon- ceptions . Dr. Liddle listens as his assistant reads the question of a student. A group of Senior girls meet in discussion with Kathryn Shultz. An intent audience is captivated by what Dr. Liddle has to say. Reverend Arthur Freisen delivers the message at the Christmas Convocation. 14 Highlights The Eastside Concert Choir gave their annual Christmas Concert prior to the dismissal for Christmas Vacation. The program included the traditional songs of Christmas from Joy to the World to selections from Handel's Messiah. Members of the faculty are honored. Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire. In raising money for additional choir robes, the Music Boosters sponsored a basketball game between the Eastside Faculty and the WOWO Air Aces on Jan- uary 25. A capacity crowd viewed the antics of the Air Aces as they captured a close victory. Besides providing for a worthy cause the venture was highly en- tertaining and a delightful treat. The people pictured on the preceding pages serve not only to guide and educate us, but to help us when we need someone to turn to. Too often we fear them as being something other than human, but if we take the time to know and understand that they are no different than we are, except in the respect that they have experienced more in life. What they have learned, they as teachers in turn are offering to us . Compliments of BUTLER G BUTLER COMPANY 40 Janitors: Mr. Earl Lyons, Mr. Albert Brown. The book was enlarged to 136 pages, new layout methods devised, and a new look for the fac- ulty section. All of this was done in hopes that this would be one of the more outstanding annuals. Perhaps the greatest asset to this year's staff was a certain Yashica Mat-Em Camera which went anywhere and everywhere capturing the action portrayed in this an- nual. From previous experience it was soon learned that good annual pictures require the proper camera. And the Yashica has more than satisfied the requirements! The 1968 Easterner Staff hopes that this annual will bring years of outlasting enjoyment. The 1968 Student Council, under the lead- ership of President Skip Campbell and with the cooperation of its twenty-six members, did much to unite the Student Body through the stimulation of school spirit. With the complete support of Mr. Robert Wilder, the Council sponsored the first annual Homecoming Talent Show, the first Pride in Eastside Week, and the first Spring Festival. Only on the basis of united school organizations and students were they carried to success . Pres. Eastside vs. Garrett Floor General Skip Campbell takes aim to skillfully pass the ball out of the reach of his Garrett guard. Deo Wasson stretches every inch to take advantage of a rebound. Two girls, Janelle Moore and Nila Willibey qualified for competition in the Girls' State Track Meet. It is apparent that we have some very able girl athletes at Eastside and it is hoped that their athletic program will grow and expand with that of the boys. Much credit can be given to Mrs. Parshall in the initiation of girls' athletics at Eastside. Her interest in the physical fitness of high school students is pro- found . Clubs and classes were assigned rooms to clean, essays were written, and signs made. Eastside spar- kled from top to bottom as its seams burst with pride. All categories were judged and prizes given to the winners at a special convo. To cli- max this most historic week, Eastsiders par- ticipated in a Goose Chase sponsored by the Youth for Christ in Auburn. The students'pride was at its most glorious height as they took all the bows for the event, capturing both geese! The prize for the evening's festivities was a huge trophy. Students learned that by taking pride in what you have and not what you do not have that any atmosphere can be brightened. Ifthisbethecase, then long live Pride in East- side! The band's sign took first-place honors in the sign contest. Within the hallowed interiors of Fort Wayne's Cutter's Chalet, guests were impressed by the tasteful decora- tions which provided a night-club-like atmosphere. Completing the memorable setting were the soothing strains of the Blue Impressions, highlighted by the professional entertainment of comedian Mike Caldwell. The meal over, juniors prepare for the onslaught of an eventful evening. The Night of Forget-Me-Not climaxes with a sock hop and a breakfast. To The realization of graduation is quickly approaching as Seniors prepare themselves in eager readiness. A major milestone of life nears its completion. Lending a helping hand. 130 Realize Our Dreams The Diploma--symbol of twelve years of knowledge, uncountable memories, and a storehouse of experience. 131 Dear Eastside, This is a letter for posterity. Speaking for the 1968 Easterner, I will say an unexpressible thanks to all the people who made this annual possible: The students who are Eastside, for it is to them that this book is dedicated; Principal Myers for his intense interest and seeing that we had a proper camera with which to capture the action; to the faculty for their cooperation and patience; to Mr. Sherer, our advisor; To the pa- trons for their financial support; to Shawn Campbell, for her diligent work in obtaining financial support and controlling expenses; to Nancy Ulm for designing the cover and division pages; and to my staff who worked hard in obtaining supporting funds. The Easterner of 1968 is different in many respects and perhaps that can be attributed to the fact that the characters portrayed between its covers are changing and growing individuals. This is the first realization that struck me upon graduation as I joined the people who are no longer a part of the continuing Eastside, but the Eastside of the past. Graduation is a beginning of a future and the climax of a past. Remembering the past, one is certain to touch many soft spots. But we who graduate must go forward into the future taking with us the knowledge and the experience that has been gained in the midst of these hallowed halls. Eastside changes every year, because its inhabi- tants change . One can not regret returning to Eastside after he graduates, for it will not be the Eastside that he knew. It is only when you walk through an empty school that bears the name of Eastside, amidst its deafening silence, that you realize that people make Eastside, not a building. Do not blame the building for the inconveniences, for this building has housed many wonderful memories, with a resounding echo. It is where you learned how to face life; it is where you experienced life. I hope that you will treasure this book for many years to come, no one can fully realize all the work and effort which has gone into its creation. But most important: remember to be proud that you are East- side, for you create the life within the building which bears the name. Sincerely, 132 what next? After high school, what: travel, work, service, college or technical school? Regardless of your choice, how far you go in this space age depends partly on your imag- ination but primarily on your education and training. Conquering new horizons will demand more knowledge, more skills, more training and more specialization. Our free-enterprise system, the backbone of our country, has given us the highest standard of living in the world and the greatest degree of individual freedom.
