'67 SENIORS PRESENT: Class Colors--Red and White Class Flower--Red Rose Class Motto--Learning to live by living to learn WE WILL REMEMBER Try to remember with each new September the high school years we’ve shared together; Try to remember the kind of September when life is unfurled a whole year better; Try to remember that special September that opened the door to our Senior endeavor; Try to remember and if you remember, then follow . . . Try to remember when life was so tender that every hope was sure to billow; Try to remember the green and white splendor, the spirits high, that flaming fellow ; Try to remember wisdoms warm ember that touched our souls to fill the hollow; Try to remember and if you remember, then follow . . . We will remember with each new September these years we’ve grown and learned together; We will remember that every September can mean the start of a new forever; Life lies before us and God watches o’er us, let’s live by this chorus which ceases never; We will remember but more than remember, we’ll follow . . . follow . . follow ... 23 To the surprise of the class, Jackie Lorentzen and Jeff Myers presented themselves as court jesters to the Queen of England. To help the Senior Class before they attended The Taming of the Shrew, these helpful classmates gave some enjoyable excerpts of the play. To add to the excitement of the Shakespearean Project, eight seniors gave an amazing demonstra- tion of a May Day Dance. 24 Upon exit from the Civic Theater Rachel Kaiser and Diana Arnett gave these candid reactions. Miss Griffith, Flame librarian, took it upon herself to periodically place displays in the library in conjunction with holidays, seasons, items in the news, and school activities . Student awareness was im- proved and Study Hall was brightened by the unusual affairs . Miss Griffith also or- dered a pile of new books and guided charges to the captivating stimulants . To relieve an over-crowded Study Hall, students were dispersed to an unused room. Mrs. Nancy Roush and Mrs. Jean- ette Kaiser were in charge of morning and afternoon sessions of The Hall. Due to her hospitalization, however, the eager faces of an anticipating charges missed the fa- miliar and likeable Mrs. Kaiser. Syrus Vocations: for Just Experience Tells . . . Repetition and mem- orization played a major part in the learning process. Mrs. Posey created interest within her classes by dis- tributing a newspaper written entirely in Spanish, engaged a restaurant where the Span- ish Club held their Banquet and ate Mexican food, and sent two language students to Mexico for six weeks . The Spanish Club visited Ball State during which they watched a ballet. The pinata party opened the year with all the traditional Spanish customs flowing in to it. To finance their activities, the kids stimulated school spirit by selling class pins with the initials of Eastside . To Show the Whole Extent of Its Beauty and Power . . . Dryden r ■■ V Every member of the Blazer student body belongs to an English class. By the thoughtful consideration of the in- structors, material was presented to the FLAME staff for possible consider- ation for publication. Seniors had a broad range of plays, critical reviews, and novels to prepare for the outside while Juniors were comprehending po- etry, quite uniquely by studying such folk songs as Song of Silence and At the Zoo. Sophomores began a back- ground of literature and the Freshman concluded grammar study. Art Alone Enduring Stays to Us . . . Dobson Personal satisfaction and enjoyment were found by Art, Chorus, and Band Students. Several occasions arose where the arts could be ex- hibited with pride. Miss Griffith placed draw- ings in the Study Hall, the scenery for S.H.A. and Bye-Bye Birdie, and the drawings in the Flame were sketched by Miss Briegel's aspir- ing classes. The Fosters shone through at district and state contest, the concerts and the musical. Each event and opportunity was a call to talented students to display their school spirit and individual effort for the community. Of Energies . . . That Cannot Die . . . Symonds The requirements at Eastside for Physical Education are two years, but students may take additional years if they desire. Girls Physical Education under the leadership of Mrs. Hood engage in many healthy exercises and games. Among these are volleyball, soc- cer, badminton, softball, tumbling and bowl- ing. Under the supervision of Mr. Templeton, the boys Physical Education classes kept fit with many strenuuous activities such as calis- thenics, basketball, baseball, football, dodge ball, tumbling and bowling. All Phys. Ed. classes are kept very active throughout the year. He Profits Best Who Serves Best . . . Sheldon (Rotary Motto) Speed typing tests, dictaphone typing, office practice sets and many other varied courses of study are what Business students at Eastside en- gaged at throughout the year. Through the able hands of Mr . Sherer and Mr. Strange, the stu- dents learned the skills of typing. Mr. Hansen, who constantly prod- ded his students along, knows that somewhere in the back of their minds lie an usable knowledge of Bookeeping. And through the splen- did teaching of Mrs. Overmyer, girls learned how to use many dif- ferent office machines. Speech Is a Mirror of the Soul: As a Man Speaks, So Is He . . . Syrus Through tongue and hand Blazers spoke out. Gaining experience through re- quired speech contests, EHS'ers won some recognition. Lane Brown and Anne Kagey traveled to the District Rotary Speech Contest while Kathy Nebehy and Jeff Snyder placed first and second at the county Soil Conservation Contest. Kathy traveled to Manchester College for the area rivalry and tied for third. Staff members of the newspaper jour- neyed to Franklin College at the be- ginning of the year to exchange ideas and become better informed . Experience taught them, through blunders and suc- cess, and they learned by doing. 45 While Bright-Eyed Science Watches Round . . . Gray Mr. Bracht, Mr. Conkey, Mr. Moreland and Mr. Severson are the instructors of Eastside’s Science department. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and general science are the courses which these four men teach. With their guided assistance the students at Eastside learn through helpful labs and experiments the wonderful world of science. Also with their cooperation and assistance, students took active part in field trips. Mathematics Possesses Not Only Truth but Supreme Beauty . . . Russell Nearly all students at Eastside enroll in at least two math courses during their high school curriculum. Courses vary from General Math, with Mr. Bedwell and Mrs. Schubert, to College Algebra and Trigonometry with Mrs . Culler. These teachers instruct their students in the correct procedure in working an every day Math problem to the most difficult quadratic equation. In Mrs. Schubert's Algebra class such things as graphs, linear equations and story problems were taught. In her 4th period class, a cadet teacher graded papers and occasionally taught class to gain knowledge of what it would be like to be a math teacher. While We Read History We Make History . .. Curtis The Social Studies courses offered at E.H.S. include U.S. History, Government, World History, and World Geography. Mrs. Adams, the teacher of U.S. History taught her students the events that formulated our American Heritage. Mr. Wilder supplemented the Government textbook by taking his Senior charges on an informa- tive field trip to our State Capitol. World Geography and World History, taught by Mr. Hollingsworth complete Eastside's cur- riculum in the field of Social Studies . 48 Eastside in the Flesh 49 Autographs of Cross Country Football Basketball 50 Favorite Players Track Golf Baseball 51 This year Eastside has had the experience of having a blue-eyed blonde foreign exchange student. His name is Bjarke Langkjaer and he was from Aalborg, Denmark, but now resides in Frederikshavn, Denmark. He was a part of the International Christian Youth Exchange Program and was sponsored by the First E.U.B. Church of Butler. In this program a host family is selected for each student, and Bjarke was staying at Mr. Mrs. Walter M. Smith's home. This year he was a member of the Senior Class of 1967 and took active part in all student activities. Bjarke said he enjoyed his stay very much and would like to thank all who made his stay such an enjoyable experience. In Danish Schools they have no extra-curricular activities so he especially liked this part of school. He mainly liked the basketball games and as a result of it, many times couldn't speak the next morning. When Bjarke returned to Denmark, he started college to become a teacher. If you would start paying your teachers better I just might come back and teach. Magazine sales in the fall totaling $5200 broke all existing school records. A car wash, a bake sale and two paper drives were enthusiastically undertaken to raise extra funds for the highlight of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom. A great profit was reaped from concessions at Football and Basket- ball games. The Prom Committee ran smoothly handling the numerous arrangements connected with the Prom under the able leadership of Vice- President Janet Sebert. Handling finances, record- ing meeting proceedings and miscellaneous items was Secretary-Treasurer Donna Guy. Under the guidance of Sophomore Class President, Vernon Lake, the tenth graders showed their forceful backing by winning first place in the Tourney Spirit Sign Contest. Second in Command this year is Ted Miller. Also prominent in this year's activities was a class party. Recording events was Sec- retary Lana Mast. Handling funds was Treasurer Darla Vachon. Eagerly anticipating the friendship of scores of future classmates, the freshmen found their way into Blazer Society. Led by their Presi- dent Van Miller and their Vice President, Jill Dielman, they were acquainted with traditions and patterns which will occur through- out their secondary school years. Recording their activities and watching class finances was Secre- tary-Treasurer, Kathy Hudson. Compliments of DARI-TREET JUNIOR HIGH Butler Eighth Grade L. Abell R. Alwood M. Anderson D. Bell B. ACTIVITIES Evening in Paradise was the prevailing theme at the 67 Prom held at Potawatomi Inn, Pokagon State Park, Angola . It was the traditional dance and banquet held by the Juniors for sentimen- tal Seniors. The highlight of the evening was the coronation of the Hawaiian” King (Stan Mil- ler) and Queen (Jan Sebert). Beautifully decorated with life- like palm trees and pineapples the room was strewn with fish net of various hues and Polynes- ian gods’ heads. The patio, lit by torches and overlooking the lake while moonbeams and stars shone, also accented the theme. Psst, Stan, your crown's crooked. Your turn is next, Diana! 114 To chase the glowing hours with flying feet. --Byron OTHER AFFAIRS Although the formal dance dominated The Night, the Jaycees sponsored a rock’n'roll hop in the early morning. It gave the kids a chance to let their hair down and kick off their shoes. Inter- ested parents cooked a steaming breakfast for hungry prom-goers before the dawn broke and they went their own ways. Formal dancing continues the mood. A Pennant for the Kremlin” Make-up crew strikes again. Ok, Herbie, get a good shot of this. Deborin throws the fish. Kathy Nebehy portrays a fish lady. The Senior Class of 1967 Is Finally at the End of Their Long Journey A M Here They Are Shown at Their Commencement Exercises Receiving Their Diplomas and Taking One Last Look at Their 92 Member Class A NOTE FROM THE EDITORS The Easterner of 1967 in its fourth year at Eastside is now completed. We would like to say it has been a challenging job to try and show the community, the school life at Eastside. We came across many problems and difficulties, but with the help of a great staff we managed to keep going. This yearbook could not have been produced without the help of many people who were willing to give both time and work in order to produce it. We would like to thank Mr. Murphy, our devoted advisor, who spent many hours being patient and helpful. Our Principal, Mr. Kent Myers and all the teachers for their assistance and cooperation. To the businessmen of the surrounding com- munities who have helped to support the Easterner. And last but not least to our loyal and faithful staff who continually kept the book running. In ending, as we have said before, it has been an enjoyable experience for us, and we hope your enjoyment will be complete through the years as it brings back memories to you of the 1966-67 school year.
