It has been his responsibility to see that the Riverdale and Butler schools have been smoothly combined to form the East- side High School. In this task he has been successful. Besides working with the School Board, he also en- forces the rules and policies of the Indiana State Board of Education as well as those of the North Central Associ- ation. Superintendent, Mr. Ernest Zeller Mrs. Helen Houlton Familiar to students in Butler Ele- mentary School and the Eastside High School is Mr. Zeller's secretary, Helen Houlton. During the past years, Helen has become a very important part of our school system. She keeps both the School Board and has proved to be efficient in all phases of office work. It would be difficult to match her ability or to find one that is more accomo- dating. a quem BOE 2 pet Olea SE Courtesy of LAUB BROTHERS OIL CoO. Besides the usual problems of a busi- ness, Mr. Myers faces head- aches in scheduling classes, maintaining discipline, and acting as a mediator between pupils and teachers. He is never too busy to help a pupil with a problem and has a friendly smile for everyone. We are indeed lucky to have a principal like Mr. Myers. Principal, Mr. Kent Myers Gwyn Kandel As we enter Mr. Myer's office, Gwyn Kandel is the first person to greet us. No matter what is our problem. Pres.; Sunnie Miller, Sec'y; Dick Grogg, Pres.; not pictured, David Fisher, Treas. The Senior Class is nearing the time when they will be required to take an active part in the world. After twelve years, they will finally assume this role. Some will go directly to vocations, some to the military service, and others to college. They are looking to SUCCESS. In their final year the Seniors were very active. They sold cider, put on a paper drive, had a bake sale, a car wash and a dance. With consolidation of the Riverdale and Butler Schools the class treasury was sufficient to enable them to go on their Senior trip to Washington D.C.. and New York. This climaxed an active and enjoyable, final year. The Eastside Student Councils, both temporary and regular, faced many problems, but with the help of their Advisor, Mr. Wilder, they were equal to the challenging task. The temporary Student Council members were selected from each class of the Riverdale and Butler schools. This group drew up the constitution under which the Student Council now operates. The preamble to the constitution sums up the purpose of the Student Council. It states: We, t he students of Eastside High School, in order to provide for student participa- tion in school government, establish better understanding between faculty and stu- dents, afford training in citizenship; and insure sincere respect for law and order, do hereby establish and ordain this constitution for student government in Eastside High School. SEASON STORY The past season over-all the Eastside Blazers baseball team won twenty games in twenty-one starts for the best record in this area and certainly one of the best in the entire state. The B's started their season way back on June 14 at Orland, where they handed Orland a surprising 14-1 defeat behind the 4-hit pitching of Dave Haberkorn and the hitting of Lloyd Beard and Jack Bercaw. Three days later, the Eastsiders downed Hamilton 8-3 at Hamilton, with Terry Wilson pitching a 4-hitter and striking out 11, while Red Walter and Jim Reinlehl supplied the hitting. So it was the rest of the summer as the Flames ran their record to 10-0 including exhibition wins over Hicksville and Kendallville to give them the regular sea- son championship. Three straight wins gave the B's their trophy for the after-season play off and made their record 13-0. | The streak finally ended on a cold windy day at Leo when the seven Blazer errors helped Leo to an 8-7 win in 9 innings. The B's quickly got back on the right track as they opened the fall league play with a 16-0 walloping of Ashely at Ashely and followed with a 9-6 victory over S alem Center. Wins over Orland, Hamilton, and Waterloo followed to give the Blazers a 5-0 record for the regular season championship and an 18-1 over-all record. Full of confidence, the locals knocked off Salem Center 7-2 at Eastside, and then won their final game of 1963 and the play-off with a 6-4 win over Orland at Orland. 86 —— it eee Bai Ty - Ly ai nn rs ha ioe 4 i | ZAURAK BOV Roc, ec! a cy a hee a oY | ¥ 7 ‘ a4 y 342 oepceus seek fool revs ture dim? It primarily involves the crowning of a new queen; however, there is more to it than just that. There are the pep rallies which ignite school spirit, the lightning action of the game itself, the return of alumnae to see their alma mater, and its present generation of fun, fads, and friends, and the beautiful dance over which the new queen reigns. Homecoming is a time for gay festivities, occurring at present, ac- knowledging the past, and greeting the future. The escorts join the Pep Club during a break in the homecoming festivities, AND ESCORTS Homecoming Queen candidates; Janet Kelly, Glenda Sible, Vera Smethers, Carol Tustison, and Marynelle Baker. 105 a. wo tena. Freshmen and seniors alike will dash out of their classrooms and head for home and new horizons. A few good-bys and some 'see-ya-laters ' will fill the air. Most of the students will return again in three months, but for the seniors it will be the final chapter in a book which they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. As they cram lasting memories into a beat-up notebook and heave it into the back seat, their heads will slowly turn, a sudden quiet will prevail, and then, just as suddenly, will disappear into the roar of motors and frenzied confusion of joyous laughter. But as they speed down life's highway, they will always remember and deeply cherish that eternal glimpse of a true friend, indeed, Eastside High School . united in every way! 115 cit @vlogeib yidolup iliw they foorse od? It has been a privilege to be the editors of this publication. It has been hard work, but it has also been fun, and we shall never forget the experiences associated with it. Looking back, it now seems that even the problems were enjoyable, in a way. This yearbook, which had more than its share of problems because of the consolidation, could not have been produced without the help of many people who were willing to give both time and work in order to produce it. Miss Bowyer, our advisor, was very patient and helpful. Robert Sutula, our official photographer, was most co-operative and did an excellent job of photography. The typists spent many long hours after school, and without their help, there would be no annual. Mr. Myers kindly let us out of class for pic- ture taking with the photographer. Athletic Director Jim Roush was very co-operative in arranging for sports pictures to be taken, and we know that the sports section of this book was greatly helped by him. Dave Fisher kept the financial end running smoothly with over eight hundred dollars worth of ads sold. However, the most important is you, the people who have bought this book. As we have said before, it has been an enjoyable experience for us, and we hope you enjoy this annual through the years, as it brings back memories to you. Sincerely yours, Merle Ross Holden Stephen Carroll Houser Co-Editors of 1964 116 .
