H. S. Even though it is a small school, it looked mighty big to us as we started climbing the steps. After reaching the study hall and finding the freshman row, we were not quite so scared, as there were eighteen of us. Roma Younger, Jean Baker, Bonnie Noland, Pat Keith, Norman Pierson, Charles McManus, Mary Walker, Jimmie Waller, Junior Pfleiderer, Stanley Vogel, Lawrence Bodle, Betty Weipert, Veronica Kneib, Helen Wertin, Frances Carmichael, Wanda Keith, Ellene and Jolene O'Gonnor were our names. Our freshman year proved to be an exciting one. We began by organizing our class with the following officers: President, Betty Weipertg Vice-President, The second y Norman Pierson' Secretary-Treasurer,Eilene O'Connor3 2 Reporter, Jolene initiation was a not say that the a sight for sore later on in the During the soho moved to Agencyg onica Knelb mov dropped out to w O'Gonnorg Sponsor, Mr. Graff. We again climbed the stairs to the study hall and were proud to take the second row of seats. Our class officers were: President, Jolene O'Connor3 Vice-President, Helen Werting Secretary-Treasurer, Ellene O'Connor3 Reporter, Stanley Vogel, and Mr. Graff was Sponsor. This year was a quiet one for us. We enjoyed a tour of St. Joseph's industries. Some of our better ath- letes began their team work. We lost one of our classmates when Jean Baker moved to Plattsburg. During the Junior year we were getting into CLASS for we sat next to the last row of seats. We lost three of our members. Jolene and Ellene O'Connor changed to Gower, and Stanley Vogel went to Central, but we gained two new members, Wesley Welsh from Agency, and Jerry Joe Cook from Sullivan. Our junior play was one of our biggest events, and we were proud of our first stage experience. The banquet that we gave in honor of the seniors was very successful and much enjoyed. We were sorry when Betty Weipert dropped out of :choolkto help at home and Wesley Welsh quit to go o wor . Our senior year found us nearer our goal. We sat in the senior row and felt and acted like seniors. There are ten of us left. We elected the following officers: President, Junior Pfleidererg Vice-Pres1- dent, Patricia Keithg Secretary-Treasurer, Roma June Youngerg Reporter, Wanda Keith, and our Sponsor, Mr. Denney. We all took part in the carnival, published the HBeaconn and the WYear Booku, staged the senior play and caused our teachers much trouble. Our trip to Jefferson City and the surrounding territory, and WSen1or Dayn at Maryville will be memories that we shall cherish for many years to come. Our play proved that we are rather WGood Country Folksu. It is hard to express our enjoyment of the four full years, and to make the faculty believe that we do thank them and the community for our schooling. SENIOR CLASS PROPH CY Dear Editor of the Beacon: It was in the year of 1960, when I was attending the Alumni banquet at Easton, Missouri that I saw them again. I had been abroad for seven years, so I was really looking forward with great pleasure and a little curiosity to meeting my old friends, the sen- iors cf 1950. I had just entered the 'banquet hall when I noticed a tall, lank man, but surely a man of much charm for no less than a dozen charming ladies were gathered around. After watchlnglns antics with the ladies, it dawned on me that there was something familiar with the movements of his arms. I made my way through the crowd to find dear old Jimmie Wallen the perfect ladies man. He was still single for he had had too many women in his life to settle down to one on his farm near Easton. He was still going strong, so I left him. I hope he makes up his mind soon because I could see that the continual strain was beginning to make an old man of Jim. As I turned away, I met a prominent family of the town, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Crouse. You remember how Fanny did well anything that she set her mind to. Well, she had done well in married life, too. She told me how she and Bill had labored on their farm with their prize winning dairy herd. They had about everything that good old American farmers could want She had six pretty little Crouses and they were like Frances in their school work. Frances had kept her romise to herself and whenever she was asked to is s p . anything for her community she a result, Frances was just too After talking with Frances, could not refuse. busy to grow old. she suggested tha t we go across the room and meet Mrs. Sprague and her family of eight boys. She had two pairs m?tw1ns and they all locked like Roma used to look back in the good old days of E. H. S. Roma said that with so many boys, they just needed more land to keep the boys out of mischief. They had a full section, but they were looking for another. While visiting with Roma, I saw a tall, dark girl come through the door, and behind her was a good looking man with something familiar about hiS THGS- I spoke to Roma, and she told me that the girl was Helen Wertin, now a top executive of a large Chicago firm. The young man was Norman Pierson who was VY' -6.4. -.N L Y -L sl situ busy trying to find out what he was best fitted for, but for brief periods at a time he worked in any printing shop that would hire him. He and Helen always came to the Alumni banquets. They were both singlesand both appeared prosperous. Easton seemed to have had a firm grasp on several of the class of 1950, and farming was the preferred occupation. I met little Charles McManus, now a big man, who was running a chicken ranch, I remembered that one day long ago, he had voiced his choice of occupations as that of raising poultry, but nn.ome believed him. Junior Pfleiderer with his charming wife, the former Dorothy Jackson, was also farming near Easton. All the little Pfleiderers were strong and healthy looking. The two little girls had long yellow curls, and the two boys would some day make good ball players. After visiting for some time with these good farm folks, I asked aboutthe Keith girls. Just then they entered the room, and I made my way over. I learned that they were both employed by the St. Joseph Tele- phone System, and that they were always busy. Pat, of course, had married Marvin, but she had continued her work. They were living in St. Joseph and owned a pretty home. Wanda had decided to remain single. Just as the guests were all seated, there .Was a stir at the door. Who do you think was there? Our little comedian, Joe Cook, stood there holding a big camera and ready to entertain the crowd with some of the old tricks he had learned from Jim Carpenter. After taking several pictures, he came over to talk with me. He had a very profitable business in St. Joseph, and had practically taken allof Strathmann's trade. He-had married the little freshman girl, Betty Burton, but they had no childrens I asked if anyone knew about the old teachers and someone told me that Miss Spangler was living on a farm with Tom, and Mr. Denney was President of War- rdnsburg College. No one seemed to know anything about Miss Welsh. After the banquetl got to thinking how you might like to know about this old class of '50 so I just sat down and wrote to you. The boys played six man football for the first time, and the girls tried their luck at basketball. Both of these new sports were enjoyed by the students and they are planning to continue playing them next year. ' Our boys and girls played huthe following tourna- ments thls year: Buchanan County, Stewartsville and Clarksdale. The boys played football with the fol- lowing schools: Pickett, Edgerton, Rosendale, Stew- artsville, and Mound City. The grade school boys playedin their first tmnna- ment at Faucett, and captured a second prize trophy. They were coached by Donald Brown and B111 Parson. N CARNIVAL A carnival was held on November 2 and November 5 at the Easton Public School. It was well attended and the school earned some much needed money for its athletic equipment. A program was presented each night and each class tried to out do the others h1elect1ng their king and queen. The final vote placed the senior class as victors with the honor going to Helen Wertin and Junior Pfleiderer. The other candidates, Anna Kerns and Buddy George, Melvin Underwood and Mary Keith, Dorothy Jackson and Robert Burton were attendants to the King and Queen in a Coronation Ceremony. Saralyn Pike and Jerry Kerns were crown bearers. A merry crowd, many concessions, lunch, and a mysterious fortune teller mixed with the noise of horns blowing and confetti throwing made two most enjoyable evenings. ,X ., ,K x 5 4 , 41 'x J 4 .4 3 A-3' T, CKMAIVAL OnONa1ICN Bnox nOs Anna Kerns, Mary Keith, Dorothy Jacxeon, Robert Burton Melvin Underwood Buddy george FRCN KCN queen Helen Louise Wertln, King Junior Pfleiderer HYEAREOOK QUEEN' 4 1 1 Frances Carmichael 1 1 1 1 2 1946 1947 Headlne at Spring Feetlval rreehmen Variety Show Softball tear Active 4 H merber fFiret place 4 I Jereey Judge in etatej Freshman queen at Carnival Student council member 1947 1946 Second lace county minner in P medical essay contest Softball and volleyball teams Student Council member 4 P delegate to state 4 F Cluo neek l9AS 1049 Junior play First place in Press Conte t Softball and volleyball teams Nexcellentu rating in book keeping at District Contest Jr leader in 4 P Club l949 1950 Captain of softball and volley ball teame Baeketball team Student Council member Senior olay Editor of HThe Beeconu Yearbook queen Jr. leader in 4 H Club Radio broadcast or llret eeeay in Press Contest place 1 P22 of-wgd ld M C S Q3 one A an WQQ, A A 4 y ' 5 ' 5,13 , - ,C . i ' X ' - 'T 5 .
