Qwwf ,M My wu.LlE's REALM This year has been a gr-r-reat one. It's been swell being your mascot. You're a good bunch of goods. We've had some good times and some bad times together this year. Some of you will be graduating and thrown out into the big, cruel, outside world that's really not that rough. The class of 1964 is minus two of its valuable members due to tragic circumstances: Sandra Grant, who died of cancer on February 19, and Mark Cunning, who has been out of school since last spring, due to a serious automobile accident. In November, just before Thanksgiving, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed by an assassin in Dallas, Texas. It was a time of great mourning and depression, but we managed to pull through it. I'm real proud of our boys the way they beat those Wenatchee Panthers in both basketball and wrestling. Those gorgeous cheerleaders and the student body cheered the boys on towards victory. There were lots of new teachers this year. They had a fresh, young approach. We had loads of fun raising money to help the Washington State JC's in their effort to build a hospital for the people of Kerala, India. Those noon dances sure were a blast. We always look forward to the yearly Apple Blossom Festival. I don't mean to sound soft-hearted, but it really makes me feel proud to see us in the grand parade--our beautiful princess on the East Wenatchee float, the band, and the drill team. Of course I'm prejudiced, but I think this is a pretty fine annual. I've looked through it, and they've included just about everything. Naturally I supervised the work on the Emo Echog I had a pretty selfish interest, since the theme is Willie's Realm. They've got some pretty good pic- tures of me in here. fI'm so good lookinglj I know you'll enjoy this Emo Echo for 1964. I did. . See ya next year. Haul wx . Fw wi If WILLIE PRCUDLV DEDICATES THE I964 EMO ECHO TO MR. IRVING IRISH There's a very interesting classroom down in the middle of the first floor. Structurally, it's just a classroom like any of the others, but there the resemblance ends. The room becomes very personalizedg it is filled with the spirit of the teacher, a man deeply interested in his subject. A small but adequate green house has been erected in a corner of the room. In it are growing many interesting and rare plants. On mantles in the front and back are perched Various birds and small animals, all stuffed by the teacher and his students. All along one other wall, on a high bulletin board, are tacked numerous prints of plants and birds. Everything has been carefully collected, taken care of, and put up by loving hands. A great many students enter this room as sophomores who are taking biology in order to fulfill their laboratory science requirement. Some return to take the advanced course of Zoology and botany. In addition to the textbook work, Mr. Irish provides variation by having films and lab work, including the proverbial dissection of the frog. Sometimes he reads articles relating to the studies which he has clipped out of various newspapers and magazines over the years. Mr. Irish carne to us from Kellogg, Idaho, where he had taught. He was raised in Idaho and attended the University of Idaho in his student days. Idaho's loss is our gain. , Students enter the classroom at the start of the school year, thinking that they are just going to put in their time and receive their credit. But it doesn't work out that way, They become fascinated by the study of plants and animals and want to learn more. Thank you, Mr. Irish, for being such a good teacher. FDA--Future Dishwashers of America What did you call me ?! Now let's see what happens when you pull all of the switches. . . Remember! Get Mr. Quorn to plug it into this hole. Other- wise he won't feel any shock. We've always used basketballs, but no, you had to use a dog. Oh but Mr. Policeman, we're just having a little friendly get together. w X XY A rf W xx 3 - 1 Aw f f X ff fx Ze? J MR. ROBERT DINTELMAN Superintendent of Schools MR. JAY CHILDERS Assistant Superintendent mi Since its beginning, the Eastmont High School has grad- uated six senior classes, a total of 665 people. About 145 seniors will be graduated this year. Hence, our high school is still a relatively new school, compared with others in this part of the state. How successful has our high school been in its short his- tory? Has it measured up to the hopes and aspirations of the people who voted to establish it? How can the success of a high school be measured? If success means that a large number of our graduates succeed in college, we have some evidence of such success. If success means that many of our students win valuable scholarships, we can point with pride to many of these. If it means winning awards in competition with other schools in debate, public speaking, music, athletics, and other school activities, we have won quite a few awards. If a successful high school is one which keeps its students in school, we can quote figures to show that our attendance is among the highest and our number of drop-outs among the lowest in the country. If success means being recognized by other school authorities, we can point out that the East- mont High School is accredited by the State of Washington and by the Northwest Association of Secondary Schools. Yes, we have some evidence of the success of the East- mont High School. It is proper that We should be proud of these accomplishments. Yet, it seems to me, there are many other criteria for measuring the success of an edu- cational institution. There are many questions we might raise at this time for which we do not now have the an- swers. How good is the citizenship of our high school graduates? How intelligent is their voting? How interested are they in the affairs of the world and the future of our nation? How skillful are they in applying the knowledge acquired in school to the work they perform to earn a living? What kind of philosophy of life have they developed? What kind of par- ents will they be? What kind of attitudes will they inculcate in their children? What will their ultimate goals be? Until we know the answers to these questions, we will have only inadequate knowledge as to how successful our educational experience is. Robert Dintehnan, Superintendent THE ADMINISTRATIO TO THE STUDENTS OF EASTMONT Another wonderful and successful year is almost com- pleted. Soon our thoughts will turn from studies to va- cations, and we will drift to the four winds. The students of Eastmont can be proud of the many outstanding accom- plishments attained in such a short period of time, in that our first graduating class was in 1958. A quick look at a few of your achievements: in 1958 one of your students was awarded a four year scholarship by West Coast Airlines fthis scholarship was equivalent to the National Merit Schol- arshipjg in 1960-61 you won more first and second place awards in the Spokane Inland Empire Science Fair than any school in the Pacific Northwest has ever Wong in 1962, you were proclaimed state champions in football, a.nd through your FFA you won the State Championship Speaker's Con- test sponsored by the Washington State Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. A 1963 graduate won one of the highest scholarships in the country, the National Merit Scholarship. These are but a few of the things you can be proud of and cherish as the years go by. How did all these accomplishments happen in such a short time? First of all, I believe, it is because of you, the in- dividual student of Eastmontg second, because of your par- ents and the high ideals they have established for youg and last but certainly not least, because of your dedicated and down-to-earth staff whose main interest is your success and happiness while attending Eastmont High. With these three teams working together, we have harmony, cooper- ation, and outstanding success. In the four years I have had the pleasure of being admin- istrative head of our senior high school, I have never work- ed with a finer student body. In an atmosphere of cooper- ation, cheerfulness, good school spirit, and sportsman- ship, your ideals have been held high and we have a student body of which we can all be proud. Our problems at East- mont are few and far between and are so greatly over- shadowed by your outstanding deeds that it makes each year more pleasant than the last. To those who are graduating this year and those who have graduated before you, may I wish each of you happiness and success. This is your second home and we hope you will find time to come back often. You, the underclassmen, must carry on the traditions of classes before you and in every way attempt to do a better job. My most hearty congratulations to each of you. Thanks for the opportunity of being a part of Eastmont these past few years. Sincerely, Lynn W. Easton, Principal PEAKS MR. Joe Huble It is a difficult task transporting the students to and from school every day. The mechanics and bus drivers of Eastmont did a very fine job this year. Seniors, juniors, and sophomores all put blood, sweat and toil into the play. As usual there were many ob- structions, but the Thespians vanquished them, and Home Sweet Homicide was a success. The boys also entered projects in the Waterville and Cashmere Fairs as well as completing individual projects such as trailer building. Oh! FTA Following the National FTA motto, Who dares to teach must never cease to learn, the Eastmont Chapter of FTA, under the leadership of Ray Trotter--presidentg Rielle Davis--vice-presidentg Virginia de Desrochers--secretary, Sherrion Vickery--treasurer, and Miss Bailey--advisor, participated in an active year. In October, sev- eral members attended the Northeast District Conference at North Central High School in Spokane. The success of this venture led to a return trip for a college conference. Other high points in the year included an ex- change with the Quincy FTA and a plan for more evening meetings. Visiting the East Wenatchee School to observe the elementary teachers at work was the most rewarding long-term activity engaged in by the club members and led them the furthest along the road of learning. Headed by Louis Mabry--president, Mandy Jo Taplett-vice-presidentg and Bonnie Laird--secretary, Hi-C held meetings twice monthly this year. This non-denominational Christian club held discussions on current teenage prob- lems, with the assistance of Mrs. Todd and Mr. Laird. Officers this year were: Karl J ahns--president, Rich Marker--vice-president, Cathy Clark--secretary, and Randy Walters--treasurer. The Science Club viewed exhibits at the Pacific Science Center at Seattle, and planned to visit Hanford Atomic Energy Plant, Titan Missile Base, Rocky Reach or Grand Coulee Dam, and Alcoa. Serving their school by helping in both the administration and counseling offices of Eastmont High, the office girls saved the counselors and secretaries many steps and much time. They took attendance and ran many different kinds of errands. The girls enjoyed their work, and it was appreciated by all. Not so close, Mr. Heideman. HOMECOMING '63 Princesses Sally English and Karen Bradford with Queen Kathy Johns. An atmosphere of night life sur- rounded dancers at the 1964 Senior Ball. The cafetorium was trans- formed into a gay night club of red and gold. Tiny glasses and canapes high- lighted refreshments. Waiters in black vests served the couples. Reigning over the dance were Queen Kathy Johns and Princesses Sally English and Karen Bradford. 86 CLUB 64 WONDERLAND FANTASY Wonderland Fantasy was the theme of this year's Tolo. Alice in Wonderland characters were used for the decorations. Giant playing cards and huge flowers decorated the Walls. During the intermission, Gary Brett and Lee Vonne Nickles were crowned king and queen of the ball. Jim Hastings, Gini Pulsifer, Frank lnsell, and Barb Parkhill were princes and princesses. Psst, Kathy. Scream! I wish those stagehands would quit making funny faces. Two full length plays and one one-act play were produced by the Thespian Troupe this year. Home Sweet Homi cide, a mystery-comedy, was put on in the fall. At Christmas time The Gift of the Magi, a dramatiza- tion of O. Henry's short story, was presented to the student body during activity period. Spring came and on its tail was Stardust by Walter Kerr the drama critic. All in all, this was a most successful year for the Thespians. 88 X Sure I'm famished. I've only eaten a chocolate cake, five sandwiches, a bag of potato chips. . . The pink and White theme was carried out even in the costumes of visiting Apple Blossom Queen Lynn Nicholson and her court. This was only the first of many exciting events in which Princess Kathy and her attendants Mid Fryhover and Pat Pilcher would par- ticipate. Through the efforts of the community and many dedicated Eastmont students, East Wenatchee was represented in the Grand Parade of the Apple Blossom Festival by a silver bedecked red velvet float. This vehicle, which was truly a Carousel of Beauty , carried Princess Kathy and her attendants through the parade. Accompa- nying the girls were the Eastmont Wildcat Band, Drill Team, and Majorettes. Princess Kathy Johns A p p L E Mid Fryhover BLGSSOM Patricia Pilcher i l The Junior Prom was a tremendous suc- cess this year in setting, atmosphere, and royalty selection. The junior class was fortunate to have such charming and radiant royalty. Queen Susan Marker and her prin- cesses, Sharon Banning, Kathy Cook, Carole Guerin, and Diane Ulin, were well worthy of the honor they received. Shangri-La, the theme of the prom, was brilliantly carried out with its silhouette of the Taj Mahal, its illuminated Japanese screens, and its rushing stream. Many worked long and hard to make this dance one of the year's foremost accom- plishments. Tomorrow's Greatness CLASS FLOWER CLASS COLORS Yellow Rose Blue and Gold The end of the school year climaxed twelve years of study, fun, companion- ship for the 140 members of the class of '64, On Sunday, May 31st, the seventh graduating class of Eastmont donned caps and gowns for the first time to attend Baccalaureate Services in the gymnasium. Rev. Robert L. Morrill gave the Baccalaureate Address-- Quo Vadis ? Members of the class took part in the services and the Girls' Glee Club sang the closing hymn. Following Baccalaureate, many of the seniors met at La Frenieres' for the senior banquet which had been plaimed and organized by the class. The sen- iors not only had a wonderful meal together but also spent hours signing an- nuals and looking back on their Eastmont years. Finally Commencement day arrived. While the underclassmen took grueling semester finals, the seniors prepared for the evening. At 6:30 seniors started gathering in the rotunda while proud parents, friends, and relatives searched for seats in the gym. Just at 8:00 nature gave her crowning touch to the cere- mony--a thundering rain storm. The seniors, blocked from the gym by large pellets of Water, soon made a quick dash to the gym. Finally the band bega.n the Processional as the seniors marched in. Al Messersmith, senior class president, lead the group in the flag salute. Speakers for the evening were Pamela Sellers, Salutatoriang Susan Hazen, Valedictoriang Mr. Dintelman, Superintendent, Dr. William, President of Wenatchee Valley College, and Rev. E. D. Tollefson speaking in memory of Sandra L. Grant. The moment that all the seniors had waited for arrived as Mr. Lowell Sperline took the stage to present the diplomas. As each senior received his diploma and turned the blue and red tassel on his cap, tension mounted in the crowd. Many of the seniors could be seen holding back tears of sadness or joy. Graduation ended as the seniors marched into the world of adulthood with the sounds of Eastmont still in their ears. GFQTE-WW's W v , X Q, S GRADUATION I964
