THE MAVERICK l l 0 HISTORY OF EASTLAND HIGH SCHOOL Eastland High School is the largest of the five schools in the East- land Independent School District. The present building is made of cream colored brick and was built in 1927 on a high l1ill overlooking Eastland and the surrounding territory. This building is three stories high and contains 28 rooms including a cafeteria, a five room home economics laboratory, physics and chemistry laboratories, an auditorium capable of seating 588 persons, a sound proof band room, and a library of several thousand volumes. Also connected with the school are a gymnasium, which was built in 1929, a field for track and band marching practice, and a football field. The first school in the Eastland Independent School District was a two-room frame building which was used until the erection of a three- room schoolhouse in 1883. There school was conducted until 1895. A two-story frame building was built in 1905 to be succeeded in 1910 by a large brick structure where school was held until the erection' of the present building. At the present time the enrollment of Eastland High School is 190 students. There are eleven teachers, including the superintendent, Mr. W. G. Womack. The Eastland Independent School District extends for thirty square miles and includes five schools-West Ward and South Ward which were built in 1920: Junior High, built in 19303 High Schoolg and the Douglas School for colored children. . Citizens of Eastland may well be proud of the work done in college by Eastland High School graduates. Records show that they are con- sistently above average. Judging from the records which go back to 1911, the Eastland schools have always been under the direction of distinguished and highly competent men . The past presidents of the school boards have been- T. E. Downtaln, M. Hill, E. P. Davenport, John Mathews, W. B. Sutton, J. A. Beard, George Brogdon, J. H. Caton, K. B. Tanner, J. W. Turner, and Frank Sparks. Since 1911, as well as the records show, the superintendents of the Eastland schools have been A. J. Johnston, George Brogdon, E. A. Bills, C. A. Petersons, W. Z. Bates, P. B. Bittle and W. G. Womack. i945 hun. I THE MAVERICK Faculty . . . VV. G. Back row - Melvin Morris, Bobby Collie, Jack Chamberlain, Billy McFarland, Otis Knox, Coach Chief Warden, Billy Jack Johnson, Billy Cooper, Billy Brashier, Eddie Hart and Pat Crawford. One of the best and probably the most spectacular seasons in the history of Eastland High School football was witnessed this past year. The 1944 Mavericks won the first district championship ever won by an Eastland team. The Maver- icks were trained by Coach Chief Warden and his assistant, Floyd Abernathy, who should receive due credit for their many victories. This fighting team of forty boys was led to victory by sixteen let- termen who were James Ed Gann, Gene Young, Lewis Crossley, Corky Harkrider, Glen- Miller, Johnny Hicks, James Mathews, Herbert Barker, Doyle Tow, Charles Jones, Joe Bob Davenport, Edgar Alford, Walker Hunt, Grady Alliston, Charles Lucas, and Steen Herring. Of these sixteen lettermen nine were first year lettermen. James Ed Gann led those who had lettered before three years while Walker Hart, Joe Bob Davenport, Corky Harkrider, Johnny Hicks, Herbert Barker, and Steen Herring had let- tered one year. There were many more on the squad who didn t letter, but equal tribute is given them for the effort they made. The Mavericks worked as a team and so achieved 'thc goal they were striving for - the District crown. Eastland played ten games dur- ing the entire season. Among these were five district confereirc gams and one bi-district game. These games and the scores are as fol- lows: l Opponent- Olden .........,.. Mineral Wells M. Ranger ..,,.--... The most famous run they have made is the time Joe Bob changed places with his lead dog and made the circuit in 20 instead of 30 days. , Now we are going toward the good old U. S. A. again. Say is that Los Angeles up ahead? Ben Sparks is there, managing Bing Crosby's race-horse stables. The horses now come in about two hours after the others instead of two days. Now maybe we are going home. No, we're heading farther South toward Mexico. Billy Jack Daf- fern has become very prosperous in this country.
