Cheerleaders After a week of learning routines, the Varsity Cheerleading tryouts were held. The 1986-1987 Varsity Cheerleaders were chosen at the end of March 1986. The twelve talented girls were Emily Bell, Michele Brown, Dianna Downs, Laurie Gerrard, Dawn Cray, Krista Killeen, Mikki Moore, Laurie Myers, April Sanchez, Lori Stava, Suzanne Thomp- son, and Christy Williams. They worked hard at camp to receive three first place ribbons and one second place ribbon. They attended a NCA Cheerleading Workshop at Campbell University in july 1986. The cheerleaders competed in the Wayne and Lenoir County Fairs. They received third place in each competition. The Varsity Squad advisor was Mrs. Sallie Simpson. Mikki Moore and Krista Killeen were head cheerleaders. These three worked overtime to keep school spirit pump- ing at all times. The Varsity Cheer- leaders were the chief organizers of the pep rallies. They performed as well as conducted relays and class competi- tion. Although cheerleading requires time, money, dedication, practice, and skill, itfs worth it. Becom- ing a cheerleader has al- ways bcen considered an honor: in time to come, it will be considered a sport.
