' i H X if wa s -i Q up Q' 'Y AFJROTC - A Blue mark of Excellence!! The Eastern Wayne Air Force Iunior R.O.T.C. is one of perfecting excellence. The 1986-87 school year has proven to be a great one for the squadron. Last year the squadron was one ofthe Riur honor units in the state out ofthe twenty-six schools that were inspected. The unit will try to uphold that tradition this year. The Squadron Commander for the first half of the year was Cadet! Lt. Col. Antonio Hull and for the second semester was Cadet!Major Darren DeCoster. The unit is comprised of six flights or classes: A,B,C,D,E, and F, and they were instructed by Col. james E. Hiteshew, a former P.O.W., and ChiefMaster Sgt. Alfred Fitch. They have been teaching at Eastern Wayne since the unit began six years ago. There are many clubs and activities in R.O.T.C. Some cadets who have practiced, go to different drill meets where their skills are put to the test in front of judges and inspectors. The unit has received many awards for its achievement in drill. There is also a Model Rocketry club where cadets launch a series ofrockets to obtain a badge. Another club is the Kitty Hawk Air Society where the members wear a blue cord to signify their membership. During the year there are certain events that are held to entertain the cadets. One is the Military Ball. This function is held each january and the cadets attend the ball with their dates. Women must wear formal dresses and the men must wear their uniforms with a white shirt and black bow tie. Another function is the Dining-In. At this event the cadets eat dinner, socialize, and listen to a guest speaker. They also, for fun, are occasionally sent to the i'Crog', bowl for a drink. This drink con- tains various ill-tasting ingredients. The Warrior Path of Excellencev has been trod by many who have made their mark, but none greater than the mark of those who have blended excellence with the Blue of the Eastern Wayne Junior R.O.T.C. The 1986-87 K'Marching Warriorsf, Tshombe Hamilton exclaims, How many times have we been around this track?l,' Big, Bam, Boom! The Music Department blasted its way through the 1986-87 school year with many first-rate con- certs and parades. It takes a significant amount of effort to produce a fine music program like the one at Eastern Wayne. The extreme determination of Mr. Angelo Holman, Ir., the music director, is one to be admired. The dedication of the many talented students is also an extreme factor to the completion and perfection of all performances. The band has performed on countless occasions such as the Christmas Parade in Goldsboro and Fremont, the Veteran,s Day Parade in Goldsboro, and most ofthe pep rallies. The band has received many plaques for its performances. A few ofthe selection that the band plays include, Warrior Countryf our school fight song, La Fiesta Bravaf, Battle Hymn of the Republicf, uSwing Marchf, and Breakin, It Upf, The Music Department was invited to Florida in the spring of 1987. Eastern Wayne was chosen by the Annual Worldis Invitational High School Music Awards as one ofthe two bands in North Carolina to compete. The Choral Group at Eastern Wayne is also a fine group of young men and women who display their talents. The Ensemble, a group of people chosen from the band by Mr. Holman, and the Choral Group have performed at places such as the Offi- cerfs Club at Seymour-johnson Air Force Base and at Terrytown Mall in Rocky Mount. The Choral Group, as well as the band, have received many awards. The Marching Warriorsv and the lovely melodies of the Choral Group will be leaving their mark for many years to come. This mark will be of excellence and the students of Eastern Wayne High will remember the awesome sound that has been left in their hearts. The man behind it all, Mr. Angelo Holman, Ir.
