Where else can a student travel from Paleolithic Ages, experi- ence several wars, and discover the current problems of man and the mind than in the Social Studies Department at Eastern Wayne. The hosts through the periods of time are Mrs. Gloria Burney, Ms. Amelia Dees, Mr. Bill Garner, Mr. Patrick Miller, and Mr. Robert Peele. Theirjob is to educate students concerning economic, political, historical, and psychological changes in time. As a traveler in time, one will learn and enjoy all facets ofhistory and will learn to be proud ofthe world,s past and aware of the worldls future. The courses offered by the Social Studies Depart- ment are World History, World Studies, American History, American Studies, Contemporary American Problems, United States History, Economics, Psychology, Civics, and Family Liv- ing. Besides all of the enjoyable occasions the student will have in class, the knowledge he or she receives through the Social Studies Department will help widen his or her education so that the student will become a much better person and citizen. All Eastern Wayne students take World History and Civics because each is required for graduation. Communicating With The World. The largest department at Eastern Wayne, the English Depart- ment, instructs each student in how to communicate in the world of today. Doris Becton, Lucy VVarren, Patricia Hester, Carolyn Eagles, Sandra jones, Brenda Exum, Patricia Uzzell, and Paula Waters are the English instructors. Their goal is to educate the student in how to speak, read, write, and interpret in an effective manner using the English language. These teachers push skills that will help the student pass the North Carolina Competency Test and the Scholastic Aptitude Test, along with the survival skills required to function in today's society. After research papers are assigned by these instructors, where bet- ter than Eastern VVaynels Media Center is there to go. Mrs. Eliza- beth jones, Mrs. Charlotte Darwin, and Mrs. janie Woodard are ready and willing to assist the student in anyway possible. The Eastern Wayne Library offers a wide variety of fiction, non-fiction, and reference books Har research and pleasure, along with many en- tertaining and instructional filmstrips. These books and films are just part of the wide spectrum of educational tools found in the media center. just step right into a treasure trove oflearning at the library and experience something you can never lose - knowledge.
