The inenibers of the Library Club are ready to start the inet-ting. Cato Ilagestande from Norway was a guest speaker for the Beta Club. The FFA Club sold oranges and grapefruit for their fundraiser N--. National Honor Society attended Charles A. Aycock Birthplace in November. Ferrell lllld Steve Callis take a break. if.. FFA Convention, the District FFA Rally, State FFA Leadership Workshop at White Lake, State FFA Camp at White Lake, FFA Forestry Camp, and the Hunter Safety Contest. These activities furthered the members knowledge in agricultural science. The FFA Officers were Dwayne Coor-Vice President, Shawn Friedlander - Secretary, joe Richardson - Chaplain, Beverly Smith - Reporter, Corey Smith - Sentinel, Dennis Smith - Treasurer, Doug Smith - Federation Sentinel, and Kevin Whit- feild - President. Julie Capps replaced Mr. William Ballance as the sponsor this year. She is one of the few women agriculture teachers in North Carolina. Eastern Wayne feels privileged to have her on the staff. Obviously, the FFA Chapter had a very successful year, and according to Ms. Capps, 'The club hopes to have lllillly 1Il0I'6 in the future! Future Homemakers of America The 1986-1987 Future llomemakers of America had a very ac- tive year. They did llllllly helpful things for their Ctllllllllllllty. In September, at the Wayne County Fair, they entered an educa- tional exhibit relating to the learning of lite skills fl1I'0llgll home economics. This display consisted ofexamples ofsewing, cooking, and Himily life. For Thanksgiving, the club gave four needy families a turkey. Two ofthe Himilies lived in the Mount Olive area. The other two families lived in the Goldsboro and Grantham areas. At Christmas, FHA went to the Kennedy Nursing Home to sing Christmas carols and pllt up Christmas stockings for the residents. In February, the club observed Home Economics Career Day at Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and, in May, they went to the State Home Economics Convention held at the Raleigh Civic Center. Cookies and peanuts were sold to defray the expense of the trip. Officers were Toni King - President, Lisa NVestb1'ook - Vice President, Angie Smith - Treasurer, and jennifer Brown - Secretary. The sponsors were Mrs. B. Artis and Mrs. V. Myers. Beta Club Are you ajunior or senior with a 5.35 fgrade point averagel? Do you have high morals and leadership ability? Ifyon answered yes to both questions, you are qualified to he i11 the Beta Club. The National Beta Club is a servicefleadership Clllll for high school students. One ofthe most exciting and hilarious eve11ts ofthe year was the Student-Faculty Basketball Came. Members of the Varsity Basketball Team challenged male members ofthe faculty fora fun- filled l10llI' of intense competition. This game is the traditional fundraiser for the club. make-up artist. Ms. Dormish demonstrated make-up techniques that should be used on stage during performances. The Drama Club members attended three Center Stage production: Charlie Brown, Camelot, and Shadow Box, all of which were presented at the Center Theatre in Goldsboro. The Drama Club held a Christmas Party and an End-of-the-Year Party for all active Drama Club members. The Eastern Wayne Drama Club has inspired many students, whether in the Theatrical Arts or in a related field. It has given students the knowledge to appreciate the fine arts and understand its background and general make-up from first hand experience. National Honor Society The National Honor Society is one ofthe most important organi- zations at Eastern Wayne High School. It is open to a very select group of students. To be admitted to this organization, a student must maintain a 5.65 quality point average. The student must also be outstanding in the fields ofleadership, service, and character. The Eastern Wayne NHS Chapter members are proud of their accomplishments and strive to reach new heights. NHS meets once a month to plan upcoming activities and service projects. Each year, NHS has served as guides at Governor Charles B. Aycockis Birthplace during Education Week. NHS also took a present to the children at Howellis Child Care Center, co- sponsored the local SADD fStudents Against Driving Drunkj chapter, and acted guides at Eastern Wayneis Open House. The school and the organization are very proud ofthe Eastern Wayne NHS members. To honor an outstanding member, the Eastern Wayne NHS chapter awards a scholarship each year, and, at graduation, satin NHS collars are worn by all members. The members proudly uphold the honor ofthe school and the organiza- tion's motto 'iNoblesse Obligef, Future Farmers of America The 1986-87 Eastern Wayne Future Farmers ofAmerica Chap- ter had an extremely active year. The members participated in many activities such as the District 2 FFA Leadership Workshop, the Federation FFA Planning Meeting, and the North Carolina State Fair. They also held a chapter cookout for new members and sold citrus fruit as a fundraiser. The club won five of the top 15 placings at the Wayne County Fair Livestock Judging Contest and constructed two fair booths concerning Trees Build Our Futurev and UNO Farmers-No Food. U They entered 16 FFA Face-to-Face contests and 29 Profi- ciency Award areas. In September, they attended Open House! Agriculture Education Day at North Carolina State University. In February, they went to the North Carolina Farm Show at the State Fairgrounds. There, they participated in the Tractor and Track Driving contest and workshops. . tion ceremonies, and a scholarship given to the outstanding senior member each year. The Beta Club induction ceremony was held on October 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Eastern Wayne Senior High School Media Cen- ter. Parents and faculty were invited to observe new and old members light candles to show their club spirit. Barb Bond represented the new members and accepted the challenge given to the members by David Taylor, the representative of the old members. Refreshments were served, and thus ended a night to remember for many scholars. The Beta Club was served by President - Robin Coor, Vice President - Montez Lane, Secretary - Beth Bandy, and Treasurer - Selena Cox. The club,s advisor was Mrs. Mary Daughtry. Thanks to the officers and enthusiastic club members, Beta Club had a successful year. Science Club The Science Club, which meets the first Wednesday of every month, was created to inform, enlighten, and entertain students. The club invites professors and scientists to speak to the club about their experiences with science or about careers in science. This year, Bob Kruger ofWayne Community College and Vince Adkins of North Carolina State University spoke to the club. The Science Club also sponsors a road rally in the fall and spring. The rally is not a race, but a test ofthe ability to follow instructions and a test of mathematical skills. The contestants are given a set ofin- structions to follow. These instructions give directions to follow and the average speed to follow while driving. The Science Club oflicers for 1986-1987 were President- David Taylor, Vice President - Paul Siler, Secretary - Diana Richard- son, and Secretary - Emily Bell. Future Business Leaders of America The Future Business Leaders ofAmerica is a national organiza- tion for all young adults in high school and post-secondary in- stitutions enrolled in business programs. Eastern Wayneis branch ofFBLA consisted offiity-eight members and three advisors: Mrs. J. O,Daniel, Mrs. D. Iohnson, and Mrs. B. Webber. The members were involved in many activities during the 1986-87 school year. Bulletin boards were designed for business honor roll students, a speaker from Hardbarger junior College spoke to the members in April, a Christmas party was held in December at the Colden Corral, visits to area rest homes were made, and FBLA Week was observed. Also, in order to support the club activities and business department, the FBLA Club sponsored a Tom-Wat Sale. Proceeds from the sale went to buy business supplies and sponsor the FBLA Scholarship. The activities of FBLA provided insight into business and office occupation careers and participa- tion in the Club provided the opportunity for its members to develop self-confidence. 160 f Clubs The Clubs support uWarrior Countryf, The AFS Club drew the name ofa girl and boy to give a Christmas gift .. .. ,A The FFA Club sorts through oranges and grapelruit.
