Some other purposes were attracting capable student library assistantsg creating interest in the media professiong increasing knowledge of all types of media facilities and their servicesg providing time, service, and financial assistance to make the media center a more attractive facilityg and, rendering service when needed at school related activities or functions. The Library Club was very active during the 1986-87 school year. The members helped prepare for and served refresh- ments at Open House. They also helped with Homecoming activities. The Club attended the Distiict Club meeting in Kenans- ville. After the meeting, the club visited a museum. The Club raised money to enhance the media centeris appearance. They sold Pow-VVow', balloons for all occasions, Visiting artist, joseph Hoey from VVayne Community College, entertained Drama Club students. Clubs f 155

Clubs Made Their Mark The 1986-87 Math Club sponsored the Powder-Puff Football Came. The game was a fundraiser used to gain money for a scholarship for the senior in the club with the highest average in math. The money is also used to sponsor the math teams in various competitions held during the year. These competitions are usually held at Atlantic Christian College, East Carolina University, and Wayne Community College. The Comprehensive Team competes at Atlantic Christian in Geometry and Algebra II. The same team also travels to ECU. The Algebra I Team and the Comprehensive Team compete at Wayne Community College. Throughout the year guest speakers came to the meetings. The speakers attempted to foster and interest in the math area. In past years, Dr. Michael Evans and Dr. Robert Silber from North Carolina State University have spoken to the club. Steve Mozingo the Regional Math Coordinator has also been a guest speaker. Mr. joe Dommehoo from Coastal Carolina College was also invited to speak. During Math Education Week the Math Club sponsored various math related activities. Everyday there was a Problem of the Day contest and a S5 prize was awarded to the student who Hrst correctly solved it. Another contest during the week was the Logo Contest. The three people who designed the best logo were awarded prizes by the Math Club. The advisors ofthe Club were Mrs. Sheila McCullan and Mr. Johnny Merritt. The 1986-87 officers were Jody Wallace - President Iacki Conti - Vice-President Kim Audette - Secretary and Chris Bahr - Treasurer. ' ' if ,fi The Science Club sponsored many speakers during the 1986 87 school year and the balloons were sold at a nominal cost to students and staff and were delivered during homeroom or lunch by a club member The sponsor of the club was Mrs Elizabeth jones The officers were Tomasina Rivera President Woody Dexter Vice President Sharon Trivette Secretary and Dee Smith Treasurer The members were Barb Bond will Faircloth Tammy F aucette Uly Russo Jeanne Young Ken Pennington Terri Wall Tonya Tucker Clay Parker Kim Halley Stephanie Hurt Kim Pryor Tammy Smith Kim Hinnant and Lee King HOSA CLUB The Eastern Wayne HOSA Club was one of the most active clubs during the 1986-87 school year. Advising the seventy-five members was Mrs. Sylvia Nethercutt who is in her twelfth year of teaching Health Occupations at Eastern Wayne. Members ofthe club sponsored doughnut sales to raise funds for activities throughout the year. These activities included coll'ecting Christmas stockings for the Salvation Army sending Christmas cards to nursing homes giving the TMR Elementary Class at Eastern Wayne Elementary School a Halloween party, and sponsoring the Red Cross Blood Mobile Drive. HOSA members participated in a number of community events such as the Medical Terminology Spelling Bee at the Wayne County Fair in which Michelle johnson placed third and the group also created a Red Cross display in the Berkeley Mall. Also, they travelled to the State Fair, the HOSA State 156 I Clubs Jenny Carmichael and Beth Lowery sport initiation paintn on Beta Club Initiation Day.
