Practice Makes Perfect For Cross Countryl The 1986 Girls Cross Country Team faired very well this year. They were 14-4 overall, losing 4 meets to non-conference teams. The girls, led by retuming runners Michele Smith and Heather Till, managed to net the Mid-Eastern Cross Country Conference Title, coming in first place with an 8-0 conference record. The girls then went to the regionals, where they were placed fifth out of ten teams. Four of the girls made the EWHS Top 10 All-Time Cross Country List. They were 9963 Michele Smith, 9954 Euba Wilkerson, 9995 Carolyn Leskey, and 47 Delana Coor, who, by the way, is a freshman this year from Greenwood. Michele Smith went to state competition in Charlotte. She placed 37 out of 120 runners. The teamis glory is always shared by Head Coach, joe Terrell, who has coached the girls since last year. Said the coach ofhis proteges, We had a pretty good year. The team was fairly strong with all the young runners of last year coming back. So, I expect good things to happen to us at the Regionals. I am really hoping that we can go to State next year as a team, not as individual nmners. The girls could have improved in certain areas, but on the whole, they were very goodf, The coach was very confident this year and is ex- pecting even better things next year. He noted that he would really like to see one of his girls break the 1983 EWHS Course Record of20:11, which is held by Deanna Singleton. All ofthe girls hard work and dedication really paid off for Eastern Wayne. Ng ff if Q YQ' x. K Cross Country Does Its Best! The Boys Cross Country Team coached by Wayne Broadhead finished its season with a second place in the 4-A Mideastern Conference, only one point behind New Bem. The Team record was 24- 5. This was an outstanding reoord for the inex- perienced team with only three boys retuming from last year. Coach Broadhead said that he was very proud of his boysn. The Cross Country Team has put in a lot of hard work. Practices consist of running in the mornings and afternoons -- Practice makes Perfectl Outstanding runners were Robert Bolar, Tyrone Brewington, Ronnie Dickerson, Kevin Grady, Paul Lumpkin, and Tom Hardy. Three of these young men made all conference. They were Mark Beckert, Robert Bolar, and Rommie Dickerson. Two highlights ofthe season were meets in which a perfect score was achieved. Eastern Wayne is proud not only of its team but also of its coach, Wayne Broadhead who has been the winner ofthe Greater Goldsboro Road Run for the past tive years. He is hoping to be invited to the next Olympic tryouts. He mentions that he has won so many races and won so many T-shirts that he doesnt know what to do with theml Robert Bolar is the number one runner on the team and Coach Broadhead has very high ex- pectations for him. Although the team did not win the conference this year, they hope to win next year. With running three miles each moming and six miles every after- noon, there should be no problem for the team to take the conference title next year. L 2 'I . ,QW 1 , gilt.
