In its second year at Eastern Wayne, the thinking man,s game earned respect. Eastern Wayne,s Soccer Squad began strong at the first of the season with two consecu- tive wins against Wilson Hunt. The team later faltered under stronger, more prominent teams such as New Bern and New Hanover but was able to beat Goldsboro twice with scores of 7-0 and 4-2. The team later scored wins over Hog- gard and Laney. Wins were sparse but they pulled out a 6-8 record and earned respect as a team with class and good sportman- ship. Coach McAlduff said he had higher hopes for his teamg however, he was very proud of the ef- fort that his players gave. Members of the 1986 Eastern Wayne Soccer Team were T.j. Smothers, Chai Martin, Scott Harrington, Mike Reed, Teddy Hart, Chris Jones, Stuart Vickery, Pat McCormick, Todd Hart, Rocky McAlduff, Leon Tatum, David Taylor, Andy Tate, Paul Lump- kin, Doug Bullard, Marty McAlduff, Scott Didio, Chris McKee, Mike Heston, Sean Killeen, james West, and Byron Adkins. Coach McAlduff was assisted by Steve Iapicco who helped the team when McAlduif could not make practice. Iapiccds soccer knowledge was greatly needed and the sacrifice of his time was

Powers Its Mark. appreciated. The season, although not awinning one, produ- ced several bright spots. Defensive standouts were Paul Lumpkin, Teddy Hart, and T.j. Smothers. Offensive standouts were Sean Killeen, Stewart Vickery, and Rocky McAlduff. Coach McAlduff is optimistic about next sea- son with the return of Sean Killeen, Mike Heston, Rocky McAlduff, Byron Adkins and other key junior, sophomore, and freshmen players. He hopes that the teamis in- experience can be overcome by hard work and by the team,s youth- fulness. Next year, Mc- Alduff thinks, will be a tough one for Warrior Soc- cer, but he hopes the transition of losing his senior starters will make his younger players stron- ger.
