W - ..,. .-'ss .. .N-.,, -E im, The Mighty Warrior The Warrior Varsity Football Team played under the direction of a new head coach. Coach Gerald Whisenhunt came to Eastern Wayne from Goldsboro High School. Ironically, the best game that the team played was against its rival, the Goldsboro Cougars. When asked to describe his team, Coach Whisen- hunt said, i'The team is doing much better than the record indicateslv This yearis Warrior Football Team was not as impressive as in past years, but they still had that stan, quality that the mighty Warriors have al- ways been known to have. Eastern Wayne,s game against Goldsboro High School was undoubtedly its best, It was very close, but the Warriors pulled it out with a 17-14 victory. To support the team against its greatest rival, students, parents, and alumni packed the stands. T h e g a m e w i t h Southern Wayne was another exciting one. The papers said it was a toss up, but a defensive first half turned into a uWild Shootoutv in the second half when each team put three touchdowns on the scoreboard. With Mark Jennings scoring four and Paul Trotter one, the Hnal score was 31-25. Gln my three years on the Varsity Football Team, this team is definitely the best ever, H stated Chris Bowers, K'And, 1 think we have the best coaches in the Stately

Cheerleaders After a week of learning routines, the Varsity Cheerleading tryouts were held. The 1986-1987 Varsity Cheerleaders were chosen at the end of March 1986. The twelve talented girls were Emily Bell, Michele Brown, Dianna Downs, Laurie Gerrard, Dawn Cray, Krista Killeen, Mikki Moore, Laurie Myers, April Sanchez, Lori Stava, Suzanne Thomp- son, and Christy Williams. They worked hard at camp to receive three first place ribbons and one second place ribbon. They attended a NCA Cheerleading Workshop at Campbell University in july 1986. The cheerleaders competed in the Wayne and Lenoir County Fairs. They received third place in each competition. The Varsity Squad advisor was Mrs. Sallie Simpson. Mikki Moore and Krista Killeen were head cheerleaders. These three worked overtime to keep school spirit pump- ing at all times. The Varsity Cheer- leaders were the chief organizers of the pep rallies. They performed as well as conducted relays and class competi- tion. Although cheerleading requires time, money, dedication, practice, and skill, itfs worth it. Becom- ing a cheerleader has al- ways bcen considered an honor: in time to come, it will be considered a sport. Tackle Their Mark. Eastern Wayne also defeated Rocky Mount with a 20-14 win. The team's strong points of the year were kicking, offensive passing and run- ning plays, and as always, a good attitude. The strong defensive players were Seniors Ken Pennington, Uly Russo, Scott Edmondson, Cas- sius Best, and Morris Ray. Ken Pennington stated, The team had a close- ness that I,ve never known before. It was like we were all one big family, and it was a great feelingln The top offensive players were seniors Chris Bowers, Dexter Jones, Stacy Hardy, Jody Wallace, Mark Jennings, Cliff Jones, Randy Daughtry, Ken Harvey, and Will Faircloth. Although the team will lose 21 seniors, Coach Whisenhunt has great aspirations for 1987.
