A first impression of such comes from new buildings or from dreams still to be solidified in brick and stone. A second awareness may be of the increase in numbers of individuals coming and going across the walkways and shortcuts of the campus. The new laboratories and classrooms could catch the attention of many. Library holdings will amaze the uninitiated. New tools for teaching and learning will attract the attention of others. These are merely the means. The physical items and numbers are only indicative of a more significant changing dimension, the student. As you journey through this yearbook you will note how a capable staff has captured the human qualities of its peers. You will be impressed with students' intent on a major college mission. You will see evidences of the out-of-class ac- tivity contributing to developmental goals. You will see examples of initiative that accomplished results and decisions that moved organizational objectives forward. ln these pages will be seen groups at work, a play in progress, com- mittees in collaboration, or teams in lively competition. Here will be memories for a lifetime. Here will be recollections of many achievements. Here is a year of most significant student awareness and growth. This year could well mark a prelude to Easternls future potential as a higher institution. Only students and faculty can lift a college to true greatness. Many of such ingredients will be seen on the pages to follow. This will be a Year to Remember. Don S. Patterson President Dr. Don S. Patterson and Mrs. Patterson Virginia Dickinson, head of the French De- partment. died January twentieth. 1964. in her forty-third year at Eastern. The school has lost a great teacher. We miss her. She was generous and kind as any close friend. She made our problems her own. How many were solved because ol' her determination and en- ergy! :Xs one ol her students has said. She was always marching off to help me fight my haltlesf, Miss Dickinson could criticize without leav- ing a sting. She made us confident that we could live up to her expectations. We have had many teachers that we like. but Miss Dick- inson was the teacher we loved. There will not he another Miss Dickinson. ller originality. wil and zest for new ideas and lin-ly plans made her unique. She was never afraid to speak courageously when she was convinced that speech was necessary. She en- couraged the sanie integrity in us. We will not forget Miss Dickinson. Yi wb- 'KLSA Goltotis message The staff of the 1964 Kinnikinick presents to you, the students, this book of memories. Our purpose was the creation of something unique in annuals. After much thought, and some rather heated debate, we decided that the only theme should be the students themselves, recorded informally in the total experience of the college year. Most of the pictures are candid and lim sure that you will he surprised, maybe even pleasantly horrified, to discover that our photogra- phers were around when you least suspected it! At this time, as editor, I would like to personally thank the wonderful staff that worked on this book. They worked as a team united. They worked days and nights that sometimes seemed endless. They gave up dates, study time, sleep, and even class time to meet deadlines. Our photographers worked re- lentlessly to produce pictures of top quality. Our advisor, Pat McManus, gave us many ideas and moments of encouragement, and we appreciate his help very much. Many thanks also to the students and faculty for their cooperation and for providing us with the necessary materials, not the least of which were them- selves. And so the final deadline. Memories are fleet creatures of the mind. I hope that we have captured some of the rarer species for you in the pages of the 1964 Kinnikinick, and that they will serve you well for many, many years. These challenges offer a multitude of rewards: freedom through knowledge, maturity through acceptance of rsponsibility, keener enjoyment of life through a more nearly complete self realization, and, finally, the acquisition of skills leading to a profession that promises even greater challenges and rewards for achievement. Easternls college community is an environment of activity and excitement characterized by growing, searching minds attempting to attain that nebulous concept we call knowledge: knowledge of the creative arts, of the sciences, and of the political, social, cultural, and economic aspects of our own society and of other societies, past and present. Concomitant with acquiring this knowledge, Eastern's students attain an appreciation of and practical skills in these various areas. Although the acquisition of knowledge and intellectual development is emphasized, students at Eastern are also encouraged to develop their abilities to participate intelligently and actively as citizens in the college community in making responsible decisions and carrying them into action. This takes the form of self-direction through student government, the student judiciary system, and the student's own personal life. This 1964- yearbook, as all yearbooks, can only give posterity a momentary glimpse of the ever flowing stream of events, ideas, and personalities that continue to make Eastern a fertile field of challenges to be harvested into rich rewards by the enterprising, industrious, and able student. Red not only coached basketball, but football and track as well. Before coming to EWSC in 1930, he coached at Cashmere High School in 1925 and at North Central High School in Spokane. ln all, he has coached over 850 basketball games. The highlight of his career came in 1945-46 when his team captured 27 straight wins and a Conference championship. He had a spectacular record of wins. During the 1959-60 season he won his 500th game. Winning the 500th didn't seem any different than winning the first, tenth or the one-hundredthf' said Reece. 'GSO many of the boys made it possible, especially the boys that season. But perhaps the best indication of Red's success is the success of the hundreds of men that he has taught and coached.
