The spirit at Eastern has been shown by the marked improvement in vot- ing in class and student body elections, attendance at con- vocations, concerts, athletic events, dances, and participa- tion in other worthwhile activities of college life. The various service groups have made an excellent effort in arranging and advertising coming events of importance to the college and to the individual student. The attempt to strike a happy medium in the spirit of the student body has steadily pro- gressed into success in this year of 1956. Page 8 W J X Page 9 ew +3 The providing of education to young people can be one of the soundest investments any state can make for its future. In accepting this opportunity for a college education, you in turn must always face up to the added demands and responsibilities. The determination of the soundness of such an investment will be largely dependent upon you. The privilege which has been yours and the requisites of the future should be a constant challenge and motivation. There will be new enterprises to be started. Many menial tasks will have to be done. All types of wholesome human relationships must be established and maintained. The wisdom you have gained here on the Eastern campus awaits your translation into intelligent behavior. There are always demands for clear thinking in innumerable situations. You willconstantly be called upon to foster and cherish our many freedoms. You must constantly be a champion for the expressed hopes and aspirations of our founding fathers. ln your hands will rest the task of preserving arid passing on to your children and your children's children the great heritage and inheritance which is yours. In meas- uring up to these and other challenges you will give proof of the wisdom and value of this great investment. All of us here at Eastern have confidence that when the time of evaluation comes, you will have given full measure of our expectation. DON S. PATTERSON, PRESIDENT Dr and Mrs. Patterson with their son, Bruce. The President's home.
