Wig Za 5 In Mem0rz'am On October thirteenth, eighteen hundred and ninety, four faculty members welcomed thirteen stu- dents to the newly opened State Normal School at Cheney, Washington. Of those four was William James Sutton, vice-principal and instructor in his- tory. That day Senator Sutton began a personal career in Washiligtori which led him successively to the principalship of a pioneer school, to membership in the state senate, and to the Grand Mastership of a distinguished fraternal order. To him, perhaps, more than to any other in its history, Eastern lVashington College of Education owes its form and existence. His was the will which through the disturbed seven years o f its infant existence kept the school alive and functioning, and which again in nineteen hundred and thirteen revived it phoenix-like from its own ashes and a governor's veto. His was the spirit which gave the young students under his tutelage an impetus to teach and an ambi- tion to useful citizenship. He has left us. But his name is more endurably writ than on th.e marble of the cornerstone of the College.
