This December, once again, EVMS students, faculty, and staff began the holiday season in high fashion as they attended the Holiday Ball. This year it was celebrated at the Norfolk Elks Lodge and highlighted by a superb band open bar, and hor d’ouvres, in addition to tasty barbeque. It was sponsored by the newly formed ‘“‘Significant Others Club.” They did a fantastic job as usual inspiring a little bit of good cheer in all of us. The highlight of the Ball was Dr. Mayer’s dancing. He attributed his style to the influence of the EVMS students. Overall, a good time was had by all even without the mistletoe! 217,

A patient in the E.R.? ICU? or on the ward? Not this time. In this case, the patient was a mannikin and the code was simulated. This was part of the Advanced Cardiac Life Support course, an intense two-day course in which we learned about sudden cardiac death, and various resuscitation techniques. Included were dysrhythmia recognition, endotracheal intubation, drug therapy and defibrillation. The course culminated with the ‘“‘Megacode”’ — a mock cardiac arrest in which our newly acquired skills were put to the test. Having completed the course, we all felt better prepared for when the real situation occurs. 218
