- Area Health Education Centers An inner-city clinic in Newport News, migrant farm workers on the Eastern Shore, preschool children in Norfolk — These are some of the unseen “‘faculty” of EVMS. They help students learn what the practice of medicine can be through programs supported by the Eastern Virginia Area Health Education Centers, AHEC for short. Under the direction of Dr. Edward Haskell, this youngest of the federally-funded AHEC’s in the country has established three satellite centers — Western Tidewater based in Chesapeake and including the Eastern Shore; Peninsula in Newport News and Hampton; and Norfolk. Through these centers and other regional health : centers, AHEC offers both rural and inner-city learning experiences with populations of the medically underserved. AHEC’s goal is to help students look beyond the classroom, outside the library, and sometimes into themselves.

Winter Retreat “Information Explosion’. No one knew what to expect from the small group and plenary sessions typical of all retreats. While the topic applied to all students of medicine, lectures focused on the clinician’s role, responsibility, and problems of keeping up with new information being generated in all fields of medicine. Each had to choose a “learning objective” and research that topic. With the sites of Colonial Williamsburg and the grounds of the College of William and Mary nearby, the warm weather drew the participants outdoors for most of the daylight hours. Nighttime featured the “official’’ parties parties with music provided by a local deejay. In the EVMS tradition, the ‘‘unofficial’”’ parties lasted until dawn, followed by a farewell breakfast. 212
