Family Practice Interest Group | | 1983-1984 FPIG Officers Dr. Berger talks with students about Family Medicine The EVMS Family Practice Interest Group, with Mary Graham as Chairperson, had an active year that began with a welcoming picnic for the Classes of 86 and ’87, and continued with monthly lecture-discussions on such topics as “‘the Nuts and Bolts of Applying to a Family Practice Residency,” and ‘“‘Sportsmedicine and the Family Physician.”’ Fun activities, such as a cruise on the Carrie B, were also sponsored. The group started a library file on Family Practice Residencies, and witnessed the birth of its newsletter, ‘““The Beeper.’’ The Department of Family Medicine and AHEC help suppor the attendance of five EVMS students at the National conference of Student Members of the American Academy of Family Physicians in Kansas City, a record number. Overall, it was a great year for the group, which continued to grow and presently has the highest percentage of students who are members of any Virginia medical school. The Community Action Committee continued to organize and sponsor EVMS students participation in off-campus community oriented activities. The CAC was supported in its work by the Eastern Virginia AHEC program, and the EVMS administration. Projects this year included the monthly Crestwood Clinic, in a underserved area of Chesapeake; weekly student trips to work with physicians and nurses providing health care to migrant workers on Virginia’s Eastern Shore; the annual March of Dimes : Superwalk; blood pressure screenings; numerous health screenings and high school physicals; and the annual CAC Xmas Drive for needy families. 4 ‘ [NO Dr. Graham and students after a busy night at the Crestwood Clinic. - The Community Action Committee i:

Hague Regatta Casting all work aside, the EVMS students plunged into the sea on Linkhorn Bay at the home of Dr. William D. Mayer to celebrate the Seventh Annual ‘‘Hague”’ Regatta. Formerly at the Hague, the Regatta was moved to Linkhorn Bay because of Public Health restrictions. Each year it is sponsored by the Human Values in Medicine program and the Eastern Virginia Medical School Women. The highlight each year is the raft races, but for those not lured to the sea, there is a “‘fun run’, volleyball, and tug-of-war. ¥ i | ail This year’s Hague Regatta Commodore was Patricia B. = Williams, and she oversaw all seafaring events. For the land-lubbers, there was a 2.2 mile ‘‘fun run” captured for the second year in a row by the swift Reggie Robinson. The day ended with everyone coming to shore and enjoying beer -n- hotdogs while trophies were presented.
