The traditional EVMS summer retreat, sponsored by the Human Values in Medicine Program, is the entering student’s first impression of EVMS. The weekend before classes, the first year students are introduced to the EVMS community ‘“‘at ease’ through discussion groups, afternoon athletic activities (egg tosses, watermelon relay races), special interest groups (massage, med school coping techniques, early morning hiking), and massive doses of Hug Therapy — courtesy of Dr. Donnie Self. New students and their families meet the upper classmen and faculty and, most importantly, form friendships early with their classmates. With fond memories of Dr. McCombs and Mary Lu Parks doing the Rock Lobster to the sounds of KLIK, they begin classes. And somehow medical school seems less intimidating.
