CAPTAIN DAVE HENDERSON This Maine athlete has scored, in three varsity seasons, over 1100 points. Dave, a junior, will be back next year to lead the Maroon and White passers. AN IMPRESSIVE HISTORY Basketball at Eastern began under the early leadership of John Thomas. Under his direction, the Golden Eagles of the 1950s compiled a fine record against teams in their own class. Thomas Byron took over the coaching post in 1958. Merritt Whitman and Gosch Ehlers led Eastern to an impressive 14-7 log in 1958. Ron Hogeland and Dave Rowlands helped Eastern to the 14-9 mark in 1961. Rowlands ranked high among area scorers in his two succeeding years. In 1963, Byron directed Eastern to a 13-11 mark in his final season, and a third place finish in the Kings Tournament. Under Byronis able hand Eastern became a member of the N.A.I.A., Delaware Valley Conference and established rivalries with the top small college teams in the area.
