Our success is yet to be re- vealed, but we admire your scholarship, sincere humility, sagacious humor, contemplative thought, just criticism, and understanding. These qualities contribute to your success. You have given much in our four years together, helping us to grasp the great ideas of life through literature and instilling in us, by your example, a respect for devoted Christian scholarship. The schoolts cultural committee annually plans an excellent series of cultural events, featuring many world renowned musicians, dramatic artists, and lecturers. Communication among students and With faculty members provides an exchange of sectional and national cultural ideas which greatly enhance student life. The nationally-known college touring choir furnishes quality music on our campus and for many Eastern supporters throughout the East. In the spring of 1963 it was their special privilege to share in fellowship with the Latin American peoples through a hMission in Music to Haiti. .iflt 3:. , ltl 12!; El; Ly .ff y 1,512,? V x. To develop mature and socially responsible in- dividuals is one of the major aims of the colleges social programs. The school social committee is responsible for many informal parties, and entertain- ing events, as well as the sponsorship of two formal banquets during each school year. It is the time when the individual begins to hput away childish things. Eastern Baptist College emphasizes Christian dedication in all walks of life. Each individual develops in accordance with his own personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Daily chapel services, Sunday evening chapel, and dorm prayer meetings provide oppor- tunity for worship. The gospel team program gives the student a chance to share his faith With others. The Spiritual Life Committee presents from time to time special speakers and pro- grams such as Mission Emphasis Week in the fall and Spiritual Vision Week in the spnng. w wW W W 7 ? It is the largest class to- be graduated by Eastern, even as each succeeding class is likely to outnumber its predecessors. The advance of Eastern Baptist College in its first decade has been striking. Its en- rollment grew from 89 to 411; its buildings grew from five to fourteen; its faculty in- creased from fourteen to twenty-six. During this decade of destiny, Eastern secured accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools; the library tripled its holdings; its educational program won the support of several leading foundations, whose grants are allotted only to colleges which meet the test of their close scrutiny; its spiritual emphasis continues to send twenty per cent of its graduates into full time Christian vocations. A new decade has begun. A iiPrograrn of Advance has begun, with a new library as its major objective. This library should be ready for use in September of 1964. Signifi- cant plans for educational advance are being designed. A dynamic synthesis of faith and reason, learning and true religion, will be the goal of all such planning. Bid we now farewell to the class of 1963. A fine band of men and women go out from us to express in many fields of service the lofty principles of education ennobled by reverence, professional competence, and dedication to Christian values which alone make for greatness and durability in life. Our seniors take with them, and leave for others, a rich inheritance. May they cherish it in the name and for the sake of Him who gives it meaning and worth. THOMAS BRUCE MCDORMAND, PRESIDENT um-v-Hrvveryv-awa v . . a A n-4mH .AK-ywr a...- p-i--wwvv.rm..,a. av. .Y- ,. A DR. CYRIL D. GARRETT mm W MRS. JESSIE CANRIGHT Secretary As a person grows, he must rethink his goals and ambitions in terms of his new knowledge, skills, and interests. This is also true of institutions. One can certainly say that Eastern has grown since coming to our present campus. This year has been one of appraisal of past growth and of an attempt to rethink Our goals anl ambitions in terms of that growth. Already there are many new challenges that come into focur -new majors in certain academic fields, new standards for classroom performance, new faculty members in areas where demands for additional help are evident, new commitmer ts by faculty and students to the ideals of learning and fellowship within the foundatitns and framework of the Christian faith. As these concerns come into sharper focus, we can be more specific about the responsibilities that administrators, faculty, and students will have in realizing them, but at this point we all stand challenged by a common vision that calls us to ilcome up higher. The commitment of Eastern to educate young people who may take llThe Whole Gospel to the Whole World gives us a dynamic to keep pace with a Changing world with changing needs. CYRIL D. The Senior Class Our Freshman year, under the capable leadership of President David Eshelman, was one 9f eager participation in the new joys and struggles of college life. Our class grew together in Christian fellowship and sorrowed at the departure of fellow classmates. , With Ardell Thomas at the helm, our Sophomore year .was one of continued development and increased dedica- tion. Vital programs of spiritual and social activity helped to unify the class. David Gay became President our Junior year when we faced decisions and academic struggles as well as many exciting experiences. We enjoyed Victory in the Tune Tangle and approved the choices of Janine Braun as Campus Queen and Ardell Thomas as the new Student Council President. We lay sleeping while the Seniors un- expectedly disappeared on their sneak. Serious preparation and a whirl of socials characterized our Senior year under the direction of Frank Poehlman. Engrossed in the controversy over a marvelous Sneak, the glitter of Carolyn Millerts selection as Ca'mpus Queen, and the wonder of our last year, we, the Class of 1963, suddenly reached the day when we stood with diploma in hand. Eastern was now behind us-the world before us. mmmmmmna.-mw:w A TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1963: 5; am. . . Now learn What remains! More keenly hear! 5. . This is the charge for each of you as you continue on your many ways. This expresses in one way your goal as you finish your years at'Eastern. However, make no mistake, you still have the majority of your work and edu- cation ahead of you. In your short stay here, you have had many experiences Which you Will remember and savor. The sweet taste of learning and discovery, the warmth of friendships formed with Classmates, and the luxuriousness of Great Oak will keep Eastern in yOur thoughts. You have been guided through a course of study designed to equip you for many tasks. The driving force through all this has been the fact that the mind must be trained be- fore it can comprehend. The training is long and hard, but you know that there are no short cuts in educa- tion. If you think you have found any, be sure that you will be shortchanged When you use them. Above all, I hope that you have finished your undergraduate training With a thirst for excellence in all things. As you move toward your goals, strike out on the way not so plainly marked. Move toward the difficulties so that in success you will find satisfaction, nay, but joy; for satisfaction is lowly, but how pure and rich a thing is joy. I leave with you this one thought from the pen of Robert Frost in llThe Road Not Taken - Two roads diverged in a wood, and 1- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. May God go with you, Your friend and adviser, j QMKL, For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal. For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. It has presented concerts every Sunday of the school year in the churches of the Pennsylvania-New Jersey area. During the mid-semester break, members had opportunity for singing and sight-seeing in the New York City area. During the Spring Recess, the choir enjoyed an unusual chance to further the Gospel message through song. A mission in music was conducted through a Visit to Puerto Rico and Haiti under the auspices of the American Baptist Home Mission Societies. The administration, during the formative years of the school, realized that in the life of each Christian there is a need for times of spiritual re- freshment and renewal. At the beginning of the sec- ond semester a single week is set aside for the pur- pose of self-exarnination and a deepening dedication of life and talents to Christ. This week is the high point of the year in the spiritual fellowship of the college family. j amamsmwwa' re. 1 t' 4'13 w d v v - t-:- a .L ...r . .J..
