sf ,212 '- 'W - -'fn N, +- The 1965-1966 Silver Pack is dedicated in memory of the late Dean of Students, Dr. Gary R. Anderson, known to friends as Bish. Dr. Anderson, 32, was killed in an automobile accident, December 9, 1965, near San Patricio, New Mexico, while enroute to Ruidoso to participate in a Student Leaders' Retreat. He is buried in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity section of the Evanston Memorial Cemetery, Evanston, Illinois. Dr. Anderson was born May 19, 1933, in Superior, VVisconsin. He came to Eastern in 1963, from Arizona State University, where he was Dean of Men. He worked closely with the .men,s fraternities at Eastern, and he helped to engender more interest in fraternity activities. A memorial fund has been established in his honor, and a scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior on the basis of leadership, character and scholar- ship. M eisfer Eastern New Mexico University heads into a new era of growth in 1965-1966, with its largest enrollment in history, 3,357 students, and a new president, Charles W. Meister, a man whose name is synonymous with growth. Dr. Meister succeeded Dr. Donald C. Moyer, who be- came president of Nevada Southern University. The new president came to Eastern from Arizona State College, Flagstaff, Arizona, where he was academic vice- president and dean of instruction. His family includes his wife, Eleanor, and two children. Dr. Meister received his B.A. degree from Central YMCA College, Chicago, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Dr. Meister holds the faculty rank of professor of English. He is an authority on the Russian novelist and playwright, Chekhov. President Meister served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. While serving in the European Theater, he was awarded five battle stars. He was Deputy U.S. Representative for Education and Religious Affairs for the Four-Power Agency governing Berlin, at the end of World War II. In his first year at Eastern, the president has developed an empathy with University students, because of his concern with their problems and his custom of making himself available to students.
