In past months I have been much mipresscd by reports I have received of the splendid growth of the college, and I have been more impressed by what I have learned of the serious attitude of the students of Eastern New Mexico College to obtain an education against some- times heavy odds. I have been told that a majority of the students are earning their educa- tion, and to me this is a splendid recommendation for the college and students alike. I would look forward to seeing an even more impressive record by Eastern New Mexico College, and I know that the students will be a credit to the school and to New Mexico. With best wishes for the continued success of Eastern New Mexico College and its ever growing enrollment of students, 1 am yi JOHN E. MILES Governor - BOARD OF REGENTS C. M. Fairest of the fair co-eds of ENMC were chosen by none other than the Old Professor Kay Kyser. from pictures of twenty-four campus lovelies sent him. Kav selected the two prettiest and four ninners-iip. Tough assi ;nmcnt because they are all so pretty, he says in his let- ter, printed Ijclow. Despite the laet th.it photographs are seldom accurate barometers of beauty, since the click of a camera cannot cap- ture the personality, charm, or grace that are prerequisites of be.iutv, The Old Professor has done a splendid job of selecting I lie cream of ENMC ' s crop of beauties. y e . Februaiy 22, 1940 Editor Ira B. West The 1940 Silver Pack Portale.s, New Mexico Dear Editor West: Under separate cover I ' m retuniiiig the pictures submitted to me. I appreciate the honor of selecting the first six ladies for the Silver ' Pack Beauty Section. However, you gave me a tough assignment because they are all so pretty. Also it ' s a very ticklish thing to stick your neck out and say one gal is prettier than another. Nevertheless I ' ve made a stab at it and I certainly hope my selection meets with the approval of the student body and you. I hope you ' ll impress upon everyone concerned, the fact that we have never seen any of these ladies, and, therefore, the selection was made entirely on the merits of the pictures. No doubt the pictures flatter some and do not do justice to others. However, on the basis of the photographs my choice is as follows: First marked on back No. i Second marked on back No. 2 Third marked on back No. 5 Fourth marked on back No. 4 Fifth marked on back No. 5 Sixth marked on back No. 6 Thanking you again for the honor you have bestowed upon me, and hoping that The 1940 Silver Pack will be the best ever, I am. Terrell William Pickel W. W. Arbiickic The men behind the guns have fought a good fight to enlarge the athletic facilities at ENMC. Theirs has been a conscientious and continu- ous effort to erect an athletic plant of high efficiency for future Grey- hounds. The recognition of the Greyhounds in the New Mexico Conference was won by the admission of ENMC to tliat fast growing conference this year. Because this council has worked so willingly for ENMC ' s name as an athletic power, we look forward to the games of next year with pride and with an overwhelming conviction that the work of the Athletic Coun- cil has not been in vain; that it has been for a great institution, with a spirited student body and a sportsmanlike football team and basketball team. COACH AL GARTEN could not resist the call to thf colors, ami rcturncti last fail to talce over the reins and produce another championship football team. Coacii Garten began his student career at Olclahoma Baptist Coiiege. Wori ing hand in hand witli the Athletic Council, he has been looking forward to better facilities on the campus and in the athletic department. To Coach Al Garten goes the honor of improving the schedule for the 1940 season. It presents something new m an extra thick padded cover which of- fers not only new beaut) ' but greater protection. It appears in a new color, breaking from the tradition of silver and green. It presents an innovation in that cost of a page for a club (and this IS a special ENMC system to assist in financing the annual) has been ten dollars instead of the former fifteen. Purpose: to give more clubs an opportiinit ' to find the money to have a page. Second purpose: to move toward another ultimate goal, that of eliminatinp; any such cost. And It presents, too, for the first time, advertisements from some state and other officials, wishing the college a good future. It went in one way and came out the other. With the foundation of the ne w Bureau of Public Information at the college, pictures became available for which before there were no funds. Engravings have appeared on almost every page one of THE CHASE since then. A new system of headlines was devised; and, most important, plans went through to increase the page size to that of a standard tabloid news- paper: five columns per page, with each page 12 inches by 18 inches. THE CHASE bought a new font of 18 point type to improve the appearance of page one — a modern design, called Bernhard italic.
