I N M EMORIA M WILBUR P . BOWEX 1863-1928 ilbur P. Bowen was born July 28, 1863 and died September 5, 1928. For forty years his name has been identified with Physical Education, having won national recognition by his leadership and writings in this field. Wren in 1894 a Department of Physical Education was created at the Michigan State Normal College, he was named as the director and held that position up to the time of his death. It is due to his untiring efforts that the department now enjoys a place of leadership in the train- ing of physical educators. Professor Bowen was a true teacher, placing service and genuine helpfulness above material gain. A man of fine personality, quiet and reserved yet forceful, modest and unassuming yet stimulating, he won for himself the admiration, respect and affection of students and associates. In the passing of Professor Bowen, the faculty of the Normal College lost a worthy member, the student body and alumni a great teacher and friend, and the field of Physical Education a leader of rare attain- ments.
