I N M EMORIA M WILBUR P . BOWEX 1863-1928 ilbur P. Bowen was born July 28, 1863 and died September 5, 1928. For forty years his name has been identified with Physical Education, having won national recognition by his leadership and writings in this field. Wren in 1894 a Department of Physical Education was created at the Michigan State Normal College, he was named as the director and held that position up to the time of his death. It is due to his untiring efforts that the department now enjoys a place of leadership in the train- ing of physical educators. Professor Bowen was a true teacher, placing service and genuine helpfulness above material gain. A man of fine personality, quiet and reserved yet forceful, modest and unassuming yet stimulating, he won for himself the admiration, respect and affection of students and associates. In the passing of Professor Bowen, the faculty of the Normal College lost a worthy member, the student body and alumni a great teacher and friend, and the field of Physical Education a leader of rare attain- ments. L. W. Olds Department of Physical Education

AN APPRECIATION WILLIAM E . OLDS Above the desk in his study William E. Olds always had a motto which bore this inscription: Nothing worth while was ever achieved without enthusiasm. To those students, colleagues, and friends who were privileged to know him intimately the message of this inscription is rich with meaning. Air. Olds was enthusiastic. He never entered into any undertaking half-heartedly. As the administrator of a city school system he achieved marked success because he executed the duties of his office with enthusiastic dispatch. To the college classroom he brought the same enthusiasm for his work. His scholarship was dynamic. He was more than a teacher — he was an interpreter of life to his students. He spiritualized the facts with which he dealt. He was everywhere recognized as a great teacher of teachers and nowhere will his loss be more keenly felt than in the college class room. Mr. Olds was not only an enthusiastic administrator and teacher but he was also an enthusiastic friend. He placed a very high value upon the friendships which he made. He was at once a charming host and a welcome guest. The color and zest of his dynamic personality were most welcome contributions to any social gathering. Although the man is no longer with us, the spirit he represented still remains. The contagion of his enthusiasm has been caught by the hun- dreds of studen ts whose lives he touched and because of this his work endures. Paul J. Misner
