Outside; mute tomb of night, a moon of ice Exposed the smooth and polished shield of snow, An empty world, without a sacrifice To offer from the frozen field below. Then, in the glass itself, my tired eyes Could see the altar, clashing unity: Great arms of fire reaching to the skies, And burning up the silent, snowy sea. As we went he muttered names of fathers and great-aunts carved into the yellow pine pulpit. Walls stood parched and naked amid the charred pews. Blackened remnants of beams made feeble stabs benath the sky’s blue vault. Yet the windows studied our approach; Their arched gaze spilling light as our feet shuffled piles of ashes. The broken edges of their giass shaped a laugh that echoed the flames’ lick. Birds perched on the cutting lips, reviving choruses once mingled with the somber light that seeped through the olive colored drapes. The walls of this congregation were built without windows, Word carefully stacked upon word until the light within grew stale and the breath of bodies folded in prayer turned cold. One night the church burned, An altar consumed without sacrifice. The people ran down the hill, leaving the bricks to stand like a raging prophet, eyes stretched by his vision, mouth gaping towards heaven crying: Let us build our walls with windows. — Randy Seitz Opening 11 See er,” ss Bi ale Pies Bie ee nes Sm at on sie a sf a Sette abt EG ancl a ay 12 Opening Nothing is more tantalizing than an open window framing a Spring-laden world. — Noel King TO FTTH HHH Opening 13 Inside Out Window, window, through the wall Why must light come in so small? None of the EMC’s course offerings are entitled “Philosophy of Penmanship.” And I’ve never (ever) heard a lecture on how to kiss. There’s a basic truth here. An import ant portion of our life-learning comes through experience, not by being handed theory. Often doing is a better teacher than the blackboard is. Hence, Washington Study-Service Year (WSSY). For ten months |, as one of eleven WSSY students, learned by doing, observ- ing,, analyzing, living. The program is in- tended to maximize such experiential learn- ing rather than relying on lecture, and | found this a stimulating change. | learned about being an artist in the work- ing world by having a twenty hour per week internship as a graphic artist, while others in Brainard, Lee Eshleman _ dill Landis, Kate Brainard study-Service Year the house had internships in their particular field. We explored group life and dynamics of personal relations (phew) by living together (and eating and talking and kidding and arguing and playing together) with one another in the WSSY house in Northeast D.C. We dealt with urban issues simply by living in the stratified city of Washington. In our weekly discussion and experience oriented seminar sessions, we worked with issues like institutions, racism, political process, Christ and culture, and the arts. Finally we took some more traditional academic courses and experienced university life by attending the University of Maryland part-time. There was a little time left for swimming and kissing. — Lee Eshleman Front: Jill Landis, Janine Miller, Emilie Stoltzfus Back: John Kreider, Teresa Puglisi, Carol Hurst, Kate World Views 61 Middle East Semester n eight hour bus ride to New York, a six hour delay at the airport, an eight hour plane ride to Athens, directly fol- lowed by another bus ride and tour of the Acropolis and finally, rest ... thus began Middle East Semester 1984. In the next three months, twenty-seven EMC students accompanied by faculty members Ken and Kass Seitz experienced life in the Middle East by studying, working, hiking, touring, cooking, laughing and com- plaining together through the struggles of adjusting to the various cultures they en- countered. Two weeks in Amman, Jordan were high- lighted by a visit to a refugee camp, entering Palestinian homes and enjoying Arabic hos- pitality. Eight intense weeks in Israel included a camping trip in the Sinai Desert, Bible study 62 World Views The Wailing Wall and the Dome of the Rock | by the Sea of Galilee, a week of service, a free week to travel and the excitement of daily life in the old city of Jerusalem. A final two week stay in Cairo, Egypt intro- duced the group to survival in a third world country. The reality of people hanging on to bus windows for a ride, ceaseless noise and traffic jams, polluted air and a limited supply of water was at times startling. Arriving home and slipping back in the routine of student life was welcome yet sad. Photographs, souvenirs, friendships and vivid memories have replaced the day to day contact which comes from group life and serve as reminders of the valuable experi- ences that the twenty-nine “travelers” had in the Middle East. — Andrea Schrock Brian Boettger oa Edward Nyce, Randy Seitz, Kathryn Seitz, Karma Boyers, Diane Yoder, Denise Yoder, Curt Stutzman, Sherwyn Smeltzer, David P. Two months of permanent residency in a youth hotel in Munich, West Germany gave us a chance to feel “at home” in a European city. Travelling by public transportation, eating in res- taurants, washing clothes at the laundromat, and buying groceries were the kind of every- day activities that helped us experience a new culture as more than tourists. Through study of European and German history, by seeing and hearing expressions of the Germans’ creativity in the arts, architecture, and musical compositions of past artists and in the present expressions of the Fasching festival, window displays, and street musicians, and by learning, to varying degrees of fluency, the German language, we began to understand the German culture, at least to understand the importance of such experiences for becoming better members of a global community. Our final month in Europe began with a weekend in Vienna, Austria. There we caught a night train into Poland where we spent ten days learning about a society even more different to us than that of West Ger- many. In Poland we were struck with the warmth and deep faith of a people whose social circumstances are sparse and rigid. Following our time in Poland, we enjoyed another expression of inner richness in the music of Bach and Handel whose 300th birth- days we celebrated in Leipzig, East Ger- many, a city central in their lives. For the remaining twelve days, we broke into groups of two or three and scattered south to Italy and Switzerland or north to France, England, and the Netherlands. When we reunited in Frankfurt, Germany to fly back to the U.S., we were eager to return home, but reluctant to leave a place that had also become home — Ann Landis Gary Burkholder, David Swartz, Joe Shenk, Doug Borg, Lynn Shertzer, Keith Gross World Views 65 Navajo Nation Seminar be verything is going to be fine, but plans have changed,” said Nancy Ryan, our leader, between bites of her frybread and mutton sandwich. That became our motto for the next three weeks because, we learned, the Navajo are not for time schedules like we Anglos are. Though plans changed just about every other day, we were able to observe and work in our respective areas of study in the Kayenta schools, medical center, in health programs, or coal mines. We lived with contemporary Navajo families, most single parent families. We did, however, have the opportunity to experience more traditional culture at the Navajo sheep camp. And interwoven with those ex- periences, we saw the sights of the West. ... and out of the West we came, twelve women, a little worse for the trip home, but a little better for the cross-cultural experience — at least having gained an awareness that another culture is not easily understood. — Rose Williams 66 World Views Back: Lori Umble, Rose Williams, Joyce Brenneman Front: Nancy Brubaker, Toni Thrush, Candy Ross, Anita Zehr, Jane Rutt, Anne Kaufman, Sherie Frueh, Jill Showalter Jane Rutt | _ceedieenea Costa Rica Seminar think one of the most valuable aspects of my Costa Rica cross-cultural experience was the opportunity to see through someone else’s eyes. | became accustomed to my host family’s day-to-day habits, their rice and beans, their jokes, their traditions, their different sense of time, their Catholic beliefs. College students spend a few hours every other Saturday with their adopted child inter- acting as a group, then one-to-one as well. These kids benefit greatly from a relation- ship with a college student. Grandparent Adoption Grandparent Adoption is a commission with different degrees of involvement. Each student involved is assigned an adopted grandparent and they spend time together going for walks, putting puzzles together, and doing various other things. Students find they benefit as much as grandpa or grandma. Community Outreach Reaching out and touching someone is what Community Outreach is about. To begin the year, a group of students helped with various jobs at the MCC Relief Sale. Other students went once a month to sing at the Virginia Mennonite Home, help with Books Abroad, and did projects such as cleaning, painting, and providing transporta- tion. Organizations 123 Prison Ministries Prison Ministries did not fare too well this year. Things started with groups going weekly to Camp 8, a local correction center, as well as to the county jail. First students were denied access to the county jail for reasons not understood, then Camp 8 asked students to not come back. We believe that God does have a place for students in this ministry. Pray that God will open hearts and doors as He chooses. Western State Woodrow Wilson Two of the weekly outreaches are Woodrow Wilson and Western State. Woodrow Wilson is a rehabilitation center where lots of action goes on (ask any of the “woo-woo” gang). Western State is a state mental hospital in Staunton. The purpose for visiting is to share God’s love with these: lonely people. 124 Organizations Below: Prison Ministries: Front: Janet Gingerich, Angel Ocasio, Mark Peachey, Willie Miller Back: Mark Leichty, Elvis Rivers, Tim Krabill, Craig Snider Center: Western State: Brenda Zehr, Bruce Brunk, Rich Mininger, Les Horning V i Woodrow Wilson: Allison McGlaughlin, Rod Yoder, Rhonda Lichty, Kristin Leaman,, Phil Borkholder, Jackie” S ullivan, Raeta Law, Wes Moyer, Sarah Mattocks, Joyce Brenneman, Mary Beth Eby, Todd Poindexter, Cine’ Wenger, Roger Smith, Patty Cooper | low: Work Teams: Gaylene Kauffman, Roberto Cabezas, Linwood Vrolijk, Merle Zook, Willie Miller, Jim qanson, Jeanette Good, Holly Blosser, Karen Hampton Center: Gospel Team: Front: Phil Borkholder, jpather Blosser, Jenni Nash, Brenda Zook, Dan Keener Back: Ed Nyce, Sonya Stauffer, Pat Shelly, Kevin sosser, Jeanette Good, Jody Shearer ak One Gospel Team and four Work Teams were sent out this year. Many of the 28 graduates participated in the program, | reflecting on the meaning of the pinning and | their journey to graduation. Sara Zimmerman, a former Professor of Nursing at EMC, delivered a charge to graduates to serve with confidence. | Calvin E. Shenk, Professor of Church | Studies, addressed all graduates Saturday | afternoon at the Baccalaureate and | Commissioning service. His message, The Cosmic Christ and the Global Village, dealt | with the problem of cultural relativity and | Christianity. Senior Shelby Landis reminisced about her growth during college, and classmate Roger Kurtz confessed to being a “closet knitter,” challenging Seniors to act decisively and unashamedly. Saturday evening graduates, friends, and families gathered for a Commencement | concert featuring music faculty. Following, a reception hosted by President and Mrs. Detweiler honored Seniors and their i 214 Commencement Commencement parents. After a rainy Sunday morning, skies appeared to be going to clear for Commencement exercises at 1:00 on the Front Lawn, but clouds gathered again as graduates, faculty, and guests congregated below. Shortly after the program began, raindrops fell, the shower gaining intensity as the congregation sang, “Holy God, we praise thy name. . . everlasting is thy reign.” Reign or rain? New grads, Old grads, relatives, and spectators rushed for cover. Graduates volunteered to stand so that more seating was available for guests in the chapel, and the ceremony reconvened about an hour later. “We’re notin the habit of baptizing our speakers,” President Det- weiler told Wayne F. Geisert, President of neighboring Bridgewater College, as he in- troduced him. Geisert’s address, The Prime of Life, stressed “investing ourselves for the service to humankind.” President Detweiler then conferred degrees to 222 graduates, slightly damp and chilled, but satisfied. — Ann Landis Calvin Shenk | Roger Kurtz Commencement 215 Amy Rosenberger, Lynne Sensenig, Joyce Shenk, Randy Shenk Merlin Hedrick, Bunita Whetzel, Sid Frey, Mike Lapp, Jonelle Gingrich, Penny Peery, Jim Maust “= Commencement Richard Detweiler SOE Old Grads Lori Derstine Commencement 217 (il Doug Nyce Bridgewater College ’ President Wayne F.
