A returning player, out for the last few years, replaced the only 1975 team member lost through graduation. Having all experienced players helped the team to work together well from the beginning. The team was held together by being a close-knit and supportive group on and off the volleyball court. Lawrence Ressler, student activities coordinator, has coined this phrase for describing his responsibilities: ‘’If your studies are getting in the way of your education, call SAC.” He is on six student life committees, taking care of the administrative duties of Organizing what they plan. Attempts are made to fill in empty days on the calendar with events students will be interested in. In contrast, Keith Gnagey, in his second year as om- budsman, stands independently of all organized aspects of the college. He functions as a source of information and as a mediator for students, faculty, and administra- tive problems, dealing mainly with individual students. Gnagey says, “If you're in a pickle or being pickled, call OM.” An addition of several culture trips and an expanded selection of activities has helped involve more students this year. “More people want to be involved’’, Ressler commented. On the other hand, Gnagey’s work has been drasti- cally changed. A basic satisfaction in the general mood of this year’s student body helped shorten his complaint list on student life providing more time to work on institu- tional changes and policies. Although the jobs of ombudsman and student ac- tivities coordinator are separate, Lawrence and Keith find it helpful to share an office. They enjoy a weekly brainstorming session together. Persons interested in sharing their time and talents in the Lord’s work through these organizations were encouraged to talk with the team members. Throughout the week students and faculty were reminded that service is not only ‘out there’, but right here within the EMC communi- ty. In view of this belief, the goal of Youth Con- vention was to bring approximately 500 teenagers from different backgrounds to- gether to work through the problem of how to make the Christian life Practical for today’s world. Youth sponsors were also provided with instruction on group dynamics and growth. College students were given an opportunity to use their gifts by witnessing in a practical way. Two students were placed on the various faculty administrative committees to express these interests and to keep the stu- dent body aware of the issues facing the administration. One decision-making process with which the SGA worked closely was the Dean selection. The SGA also sponsored a forum with the trustees, providing opportunity for student in- put. Revision of the judicial system was another project. To aquaint the larger student body with its various issues, town meetings were held periodically. Student hosts for the Associates in Discipleship seminar were organized by the SGA to give these persons a better idea of what life at EMC is all about. SGA also concerned itself with money raising projects. A United Way Fund Drive in the fall was followed by a spring student fund drive; the latter to help EMC. In all its activities, the SGA focused on maintaining communication between students and adminis- tration. In view of the many interests on campus, eight different areas of opportunities were available. Over 1 3 of the student body was involved in at least one of these activities. Caring, helping, working, sharing, giving, praising, and loving — all are aspects of what it means to be involved in the YPCA.
