Shenk Intoxicated by summer winds and stipple of sun in your hair, beaded, bearded, sandaled, shaved, you came from everywhere with seven boxes, a guitar and no dictionary. What summer metamorphosis brought you back with different patterned wings? | wondered. iw You left chapters still unread to wander over hills alone—sometimes in twos. Your room was cell or sanc- tuary. Weekends found you carless, drinking coffee, content with silent sitting. vs) 5, os elms Ss S$ a eee ee il Dreaming of distinction, you tried out for chorus, Antigone, basket- ball; read Ramparts, the Gospel Herald, learning to shake from your shoes the dust of other journeys. | heard you beat your separate drums, loud, subtle, angry, seeking self-awareness in this anywhere away from home. Biology, philos- ophy, a book, a child, a cat—a world of separate things. | watched you from my stump; each man do- ing his own thing. scence ee TO JOHN A. LAPP Whose scholarship is more than a profession; whose world is wider than its four horizons. Peace Fellowship, discussions, classroom lectures—we heard him voice his views; and know- ing what he said was backed by thought and knowledge, we listened. Because his sense of values never wavered, his political predictions often went awry; but we students knew he poured a tasty cup of coffee and readily allotted him a place among us at basketball and soccer games. We sensed the underneath excitement of his thinking; and watched his hands shape and drive home the meaning of his words with quiet power. He brought about a unity of knowledge for his students, because in him we saw all parts of life unite in perfect ten- sion—He taught us wholeness. 10 a — ne A i a aie nae RT A i ROSE LAWN! NEW SEMINARY FACILITIES inspire Dennis Boel to meet his deadlines early. 12 FOUNDERS DAY Dr. Schweitzer’s appeal to consider ‘’Science and Reverence”’ was an appropriate challenge for an expanding Christian liberal arts college at the dedication of a new science center and renovated seminary building. Rose Lawn, the new women’s residence testified to this growth with open doors, while a near-doubled seminary enrollment prompted the re- marks of its justly proud dean. Students and guests visiting the campus during these October ceremonies paid homage to the memory of M. T. Brackbill in attending planetarium demon- strations. Science films and tours which included the Hostetter Museum introduced us to the new purpose growing out of the increased opportunities of the science department. THE COMPLETED SCIENCE CENTER awaits its influx of students. oP a : yf “4, DR. TALENT NIGHT ; “MAYBE NO ONE WILL NOTICE if | act like nothing happened.” a path to see the show. Talent was a flip, a jump, a strum; a scarf became a semaphore of moods. Other cultures, other faiths, the color tones of love expressed in music, art and costume stretched our individual worlds with new thoughts and laughters. OF MICE AND MININGERS. TINA HESS performs pre-curtain rites. 16 Se Le RS gE elt: ee a THE CURTAIN OPENS on a full cast. ANTIGONE Antigone slowly grew from bits and pieces—a cape for Creon, guards in pantomime, and an authentic gong, inter- spersed with Halverson’s directive comments. Watching tension build and patience ebb, some thoughtful member of the stage crew supplied coffee for frazzled nerves running on five hours of sleep. But even a blizzard in November and a power failure during a technical run could not stall the rising of the curtain on opening night and Antigone emerged a strongly welded comment on man’s existence. ns . “ a “CHIEF, THE BODY!’ ANTIGONE (Jean Osmann) resists Ismene’s (Mary Jane King) plea for submission to the king’s orders. 17 OF BARDS AND TROUBADOURS MICHAEL COONEY: ‘Tis a gift to be simple. Informal lecture-music was a traveling minstrel in blue jeans, Michael Cooney playing-telling-singing folk songs. You sat on blankets listening to kazoo and twelve-string guitar, ‘Jim Crack Corn” and “Lord, In That Bourgeois Town.’’ Michael’s warmth relaxed your musical sophistication. The rhetoric of the Manifest Destiny fascinated you, as fellow students formed a group and sang the poetry of peace and freedom. 19 MICHAEL COONEY shares the spirit of an Old World ballad with Ken Fellenbaum ce Ait v7 “YOU WILL make this palace disappear, slaves.”’ DIRECTOR BOB HOSTETTER smoothes a tempo during dress rehearsal. The butterfly that dared to stamp helped Solomon subdue his own nine hundred ninety-nine vexacious wives. We have tried to re- cord it as it has been. Special thanks goes to our advisor, Mr. J. Herbert Martin, and the Paragon representative, Tom Young. We are also grateful for hymns of encouragement sung to us by the Weather Vane staff and for the common labor donated by Eugene Stoltzfus. As Editor | wish to recognize the consistent efforts of my staff as deadlines came and were met. Photographer Nevin Lantz, literary editor Donna Carol Beachy, and assistant editor Mary Jane King deserve equal credit, for we shared the responsibility of creating a record of your year. Gerald E.
