President In February of 1980, Richard Detweiler, pastor of the Souderton Mennonite Church in Souderton, Pennsylvania, was elected president of EMC, Inc. He replaced Myron S. Augsburger, who ended fifteen years of service as president of EMC with the close of the 1979-80 school year. President Detweiler’s four year term of service will officially begin in July of 1981, but during the 1980-81 school year he served as president of EMC in a counseling ca- pacity, involving regular visits to campus and meetings with trustees and other school officials. During the year he was also working to- ward a Doctor of Ministry degree at Princeton Theological Seminary and completing church commit- ments in Pennsylvania. In his opening address at the EMC convocation, President Detweiler said that he sees college as a calling to life rather than an escape from reality. He feels that the chief pur- pose of the college and seminary should be advancing the mission of the church in witness and service— “equipping persons for the mission of Jesus Christ and His church in the world,” particularly through further development of mission-related pro- grams on campus. The task of ad- ministration is to facilitate the edu- cational process through planning, organizing, staffing, leading, evalu- ating and developing functions.
