THE EMPTY CANVAS by John Michael Talbot © Copyright 1980 Birdwing Music Cherry Lane Music Co. Used by Permission All Rights Reserved President In February of 1980, Richard Detweiler, pastor of the Souderton Mennonite Church in Souderton, Pennsylvania, was elected president of EMC, Inc. He replaced Myron S. Augsburger, who ended fifteen years of service as president of EMC with the close of the 1979-80 school year. President Detweiler’s four year term of service will officially begin in July of 1981, but during the 1980-81 school year he served as president of EMC in a counseling ca- pacity, involving regular visits to campus and meetings with trustees and other school officials. During the year he was also working to- ward a Doctor of Ministry degree at Princeton Theological Seminary and completing church commit- ments in Pennsylvania. In his opening address at the EMC convocation, President Detweiler said that he sees college as a calling to life rather than an escape from reality. He feels that the chief pur- pose of the college and seminary should be advancing the mission of the church in witness and service— “equipping persons for the mission of Jesus Christ and His church in the world,” particularly through further development of mission-related pro- grams on campus. Richard C. and Mary Jane Detweiler 14 Vice-President Deans Administrative Assistants Lee M. Yoder Peggy Shenk, Dorothy Logan, Marie Shenk Many persons help to make a college experience a reality. The task of ad- ministration is to facilitate the edu- cational process through planning, organizing, staffing, leading, evalu- ating and developing functions. It is a joy to serve in advancing the edu- cational mission for the welfare of young persons, so that they may “be equipped for every good work” which God calls them to do. — Lee M. Fredrick Erb, Norman Derstine, David Miller, James Bishop If, when a guy meets a girl, he tells her how lovely she looks and how much he likes her, that’s sales pro- motion. If, instead, he impresses her with how wonderful he is, that’s ad- vertising. But, if the girl seeks him out because she’s heard from others how great he is, that’s public rela- tions. The media relations department, one cog in the complex machinery that makes up the college and semi- nary relations division, is concerned with communicating EMC S to our publics in order to build understand- ing, good will and prayer and finan- cial support. (“An unreliable mes- senger can cause a host of problems. Reliable communication permits progress.”—Proverbs 13:17 LB). — Jim Bishop College And Seminary Relations Father Theodore Hesburgh once said, “All those engaged in educa- tion today must look to themselves first, to their moral committment, and to their own values, which, for better or for worse, will be reflected in the lives and attitudes of those they seek to educate.” If you want a picture of EMC, look to her alumni. — Les Helmuth Les Helmuth 23 Larry Nolt Institutional Research And Development Program Associates In Servanthood Learning Resources in the best sense is not a department or even a separate entity but rather the pro- cess of finding ways to get started as well as better ways to continue the important tasks of teaching and learning. In the words of D. D. Mill- er’s term, it is “INFOKINETICS, the moving of information from one place to another, with fidelity for the purpose of instruction”. LR per- sons who engage in these tasks are more and more beginning to see their function as building communi- cation, i.e. building community. — Milo D. Growth brings with it the need for change; and 1980 saw the continuing investment of resources into the planning and implementing of an upgraded business program; one designed to handle the much larger number of stu- dents. Part of the process involved was obtaining the services of J. Robert Ramer, as chairman of the department, to coordinate this planning. At the forefront of our planning is our goal to structure our learning to porvide integration of the spiritual values, theoretical ideals and practical applica- tion that are so badly needed in the business world today. — N. I enjoy helping them in their quest for becoming—becoming “whole” persons— professional nurses.—Ann Hardinger Ann Hershberger Darlene Shirk Phyllis Turner “Nursing is love made visible”—so goes the slogan on a poster I picked up at a Convention the other year. Recently a friend of mine in speak- ing of love identified four major ele- ments: acceptance, support, under- standing and respect. The longer I’ve pondered this definition the more certain I am that these are in- deed critical components of love as experienced in a variety of human relationships. They are also impor- tant characteristics of the effective- ly functioning nurse. Nursing occurs between persons. Thus the nurse who experiences love—acceptance, support, respect and understand- ing—is more readily released to evi- dence these same qualities in his or her practice. — Vida Huber Jim Glanzer, Nancy Yoder, Olive Kuhns 41 Call me Bronson Social Work Sociology The current emphasis in Social Work is to deal with sexism as well as racial ethnic discrimination. Senate emphasized positive cooperation in filling its role as a voice for student concerns to the ad- ministration and faculty. After wel- coming new students to campus with roadside smiles and lollipops, our initial energy was spent devel- oping an efficient organizational structure, as well as appointment of senators to be student representa- tives on college committees. Senate meetings were spent addressing such issures as library security, Up- date for mission, campus lighting concerns, the showing of R-rated movies on campus, and the need for EMC to formulate a philosophy on food consumption. In addition, cam- pus forums were held concerning the bookstore change of manage- ment, and the Athletics Task Force report. We Facilitated cooperation among the various student organiza- tions through collective goal plan- ning, and were able to extend li- brary hours for more study during finals weeks. For those who partici- pated, SGA was a useful experience. --Betty Landis 149 Really get into your work. Shenandoah 1981 How does one make a college yearbook? Stay Awake! Kauffman, who became the 13th runner at EMC to gain the hon- or, finished in 100th place out of 236 runners at the Nationals held in Rochester, New York in November. Along with Kauffman, Junior Wes Nolt helped the Royals form an im- pressive duo. Nolt went as far as the South-Southwest U.S. Regionals at Bethany, Virginia, where he placed 13th. Although 2 runners cannot make up a team, Kauffman and Nolt individ- ually impressed EMC with their ac- celerated paces. Kauffman averaged 5.4 minutes a mile, while Nolt man- aged 5.6 minutes a mile for the sea- son. 171 Field Hockey Sharon Lushby, Patti Snavely, Joanne Bren- neman The 1980 field hockey team was “the best ever” at EMC. With an overall record of 10-10, the Royals went fur- ther than any previous EMC team. The team outshot and outscored their opponents overall in their 18 games, winning seven shutouts dur- ing the season. The highlight of the season for the team was going to the national field hockey finals in Hol- lins, Virginia in November. Coach Sandy Brownscombe com- mented, “It was a year in which all sixteen players were involved. We also received super support from the school. It was a great year.” Standing: Coach Sandy Brownscombe, Deb Snyder, Prances Pebworth, Cathy Brubaker, Melanie Delagrange, Teresa Gross, Marilyn Cassel, Rita Good, Betty Arce, Joyce Dyke, Nancy Edris, Barb Weaner, Deb Leaman, Carolyn Althouse, Janice Savage. They also captured their own soccer classic, defeating Goshen Col- lege 1-0, and at one point in the sea- son the Royals were ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic Division III soc- cer polls. Plagued by mid-season in- juries to key defensive players, par- ticularly goalie Norm Bergey, the Royals finished their campaign with a 3-9-2 record. Freshman forward Nick Polykandriotis led in scoring with five goals during the year, fol- lowed by Freshman forward Mike Hurst with four goals. Volleyball The highlights of the 1980 volleyball season was the Royals’ surprising fourth place finish in the Virginia Association for Intercollegiate Ath- letics for Women State Tournament, held in November at Mary Washing- ton College. EMC held an 11-29 overall record during the regular season, but showed impressive improvement during the tournament. The tourna- ment concluded the Royals’ season, since they did not qualify for the Di- vision III Regionals. A third place finish in the Virginia Tourney might have extended their season to the regional level. “Teams we played during the regu- lar season were impressed with our improvement, while other teams thought our skill level was excel- lent,” reflected coach Peggy Kellers, adding that the team has high hopes for the 1981 season since their tournament success. Looking ahead, Kellers sees hope for the next campaign, as the Royals will lose only two Seniors from the 1980 squad. During midseason they held 4th in the nation with a game average of 88.9 points a game. Two players, Larry Sheets and Tim Crawford also managed impressive feats. Sheets was the 4th leading rebounder in the nation during midseason. Tim Craw- ford held two records: EMC’s all time high scorer, and had the most career assists in Royal history. Despite the loss of several key players in some of their games, one player, Dawn Marker, effectively displayed her talent. Dawn scored 1288 points in her college career, averaging 18.6 a game. She made the All State Team for her third year and lead the conference in scoring, 23 points per game average for the year. In addition Dawn also set a tremendous record of 40 consecutive games in double figures, especially significant because she only played 69 games in her total college career. Whether you are preparing to become a chemist, engin- eer, secretary, nurse, laborer or salesperson, you are learning skills that can benefit you over an entire lifetime. That’s what makes our country great - each person has the choice to decide what career they might enjoy the most. But everyone also has the challenge to strive to do the best they can in their chosen endeavor. This challenge should serve as an incentive to use your high school years to prepare for a rewarding future. The spirit of enterprise and achievement is the chal- lenge of today's grad- uates.
