RECALL 7 The year was a big one, and sometimes we wished it hadn't been. Because the book could only hold so much. And we didn't know what not to include. It was a rough assignment; a real problem knowing what to ignore when racing to and fro throughout the wrinkles of this funny- face place. 8 • RECALL k RECALL • 9 10 RECALL RECALL 11 12 • RECALL RECALL • 15 16 • RECALL RECALL 17 •O'-. «33 -JBr- •: .' 7 18 • RECALL RECALL • 19 20 • RECALL RECALL • 21 22 • RECALL RECALL • 23 24 • RECALL RECALL 25 v RECALL 27 28 • RECALL RECALL • 29 RECALL • 31 32 • RECALL RECALL 33 36 RECALL RECALL 37 38 • RECALL RECALL • 39 U 40 • RECALL ■ RECALL • 41 42 RECALL RECALL 43 44 • RECALL RECALL 45 46 • RECALL RECALL • 47 48 • RECALL RECALL • 49 50 • RECALL u k m RECALL 51 W x JWNt cSSi ■'•‘pi Si :v ;«’y .' They like to be alone. They like to be together. They are all so different. Some are big and fat. Others are skinny and anemic. Some are brains. Some jerks. And they like different things in different intensities. Some a lot. Some a little. And none of them do things the same way. Some are neat. Others sloppy. Some like science. Others hate it. And the same is true with art. Some smell good. Some stink. Some are friendly. But not all. And all these vegetables get dumped into the EMC salad bowl and tossed. They get chopped. And grated. And salted. They get washed and thrown in. Shaken up. And seasoned. And at last they get annointed with a tangy Mennonite dressing. RECALL • 59 i. w ! ? ' 60 • RECALL FACULTY 61 A. Getting the campus to talk about itself is hard to do. You criticize people, and learn to be criticized. There is always the temptation to sensationalize your news: there are pages to fill and how can you make good news when the campus won't talk about itself, even enough to give you the inside scoop? The Weathervane? The Editor says it's getting too many bland articles, the Reporters say it's having half of your article cut. One said it involved trying to preserve the anonymity of Hewitt Henderson, and another said it was watching Shen people get finished before you do and go home. The majority said the question was How long do I stay up here before I leave? , but it isn't bad if you have some cookies, and maybe some milk . Layout: Paul Sauder, Janet Gingerich, Charlie Kraybill Photographers: Jon Byler, Leland Ropp, Ed Youket 160 • ORGANIZATIONS ORGANIZATIONS • 161 ESCAPES Life at EMC is a box. And we carry on our daily routines with the prescribed bounderies of the box. The box is stuck together with the glue of habit, expection, schedules, and deadlines. The inhabitants within this box are pressured into being schedule-conscious frenzied college students. The busier we become the more we are assured that we are, indeed, real college students. But, there are times when escape is needed. Oh, to be away from the expectations of scholasticism, Mennonitism and all the other isms connected with college life at EMC. Escape; but where to? The most time-honored place of escape is the hill. Run to the hill, lay down on the cool .grass and gaze. Who will suspect that you have escaped the looming buildings below? If you have no time to run away, slap on the headphones and turn up the stereo for escape. Sometimes more substantial treatment is needed. For these a weekend trip to D.C. or a campout may be the cure. Escape is a personal thing, sometimes loud, sometimes quiet, sometimes delirious, sometimes contemplative, sometimes in a group, sometimes alone, but, it is needed by all. Timothy Leis 162 • FEATURE FEATURE • 163 164 • ESCAPES ESCAPES A day when the sky looks like the arched wing of a gull, hanging so low over the earth and too many things are there keeping you down, you seek for any way you can to get away and soar. Sometimes your search takes you far when you want to be flying and you're not. When you do find flight, you tease yourself into thinking it will always be this way, and the wind will trick you into believing it if you aren't careful. It is easy to trade the sound of the wind for that of too many sad songs replaying themselves in your head. But always you must turn back, sometimes before you're ready. The flight sings now in your blood, fragile, sometimes only momentarily, but all yours. Back again, under the gray sky, the wind teases. ESCAPES • 165 OM-SAC Phil Mininger, Keith Gnagey Upon entering the office of the ombudsman, one ob- serves that there are no high, solemn chairs or desks, rather, in the middle of the room — how would you like to go up in a swing, up in the air so blue? The swing hangs like a child's invitation, a party gag, tempting a lighter spirit than might be found behind most official doors. The ombudsman — in cooperation with SGA, is to represent student needs and concerns to the college ad- ministration, and the various offices or departments which are involved with areas of student need and con- cern. Will assist students by helping them to understand the existing channels to be used to receive a hearing in the decision-making process of the institution. THERE IS SOMETHING OF A STUDENT HERE: Well, sometimes I'm not a true ombudsman. It is hard to always be objective. After being a student, it is easier to understand the students' side. I wanted to keep the office door open all the time, but things get backed up. I understand the Administra- tion now, having their doors closed. I tried to have it open but sometimes I can't get anything done. Then I have to close the door. THERE IS SOMETHING OF AN ADMINISTRATOR HERE: When students were upset about the vote in chapel about the Student Life monies, I felt I could defend the Administration because they had acted according to student recommendations. The ombudsman — will stand independently of all organized aspects of the college ... He shall have di- rect access to all administrative officers. Will recommend policy changes to the appropriate committees or to the President of the College. ( Policies, policies . . . people get cut by policies. Sometimes you feel that the individual concern was not dealt with, and so I help to work out chances for the person to have his individual needs heard. ) Will be issue-oriented and function as a mediator (not a peacemaker) between students and the college ac- ademic and administrative structures. THERE IS SOMETHING OF A DIPLOMAT HERE: I'm in between students and administrators. Stu- dents want to know why; they want answers right now. I'm a cushion between those demands and the long pro- cess of committees. 166 • OM-SAC A dear distinction should be drawn between the diplomat and the politician. The latter is inevitably, di- rectly concerned with the great game of power. — Encyclopedia Britannica I'm powerless to make decisions. I do make recom- mendations. My power is that I have access to personnel and committees and I'm not limited to using only pro- per, bureaucratic channels. The power I have is one of influence. A diplomatic officer . . . keeps informed on every- thing his home officials may need to know, and trans- mits this information . . . — World Book. Myron sees me as a source of information. I keep him in touch with the 'grass roots'. THERE IS SOMETHING OF A COUNSELOR HERE: Sometimes you need to help the person get through an emotional crisis to organize his case. You must get down to the basic issue; to something which is rational and justifiable. If I feel the issue should be carried further, I make an appointment with the 'other side'. Sometimes the student just needs to be directed to the right place. Sometimes, he has been there and does not want to go back. The ombudsman — shall not be part of the judicial sys- tem . . . shall not be involved with initiation of student activities . . . does not replace any existing college structure ... is not an 'enforcing' officer of the institu- tion. Defined in part by what he is not, the ombudsman moves with unprecedented freedom among the powers that be, filling in the bureaucratic gaps through which too many students and issues have fallen to oblivion. There is access to many people. But like a president, like a night watchman, like a prophet, sometimes it's a lonely job, says Gnagey. — Helen Stoltzfus Canoe Trip OM-SAC • 167 168 • OM-SAC ACTIVITIES Pumpkin Cutting Contest OM-SAC ACTIVITIES • 169 SPIRITUAL LIFE We believe that worship is both our approach to God, and his approach to us, and so we come, in all of our own individual ways: hesitantly, demanding, hurting, confidently, and waiting, and at time, we ignore to come at all. We remember God's acts in the past, we celebrate what is to come, and we make our present commitments. Sometimes the commitments are wordy, and bargaining, at others, they are sincere. We understand ourselves as a body, committed in some sense, to each other. A few believe that strongly, others are dealing too closely with hurts to believe it at all, still others search for the validity of the reasoning behind “community , past the pat cliches and quick answers. Our minds stray, we cannot comprehend, we comprehend and are overwhelmed, or we don't want to try. We sing, and listen (critically at times), we study for the next class. We take our white cards, and find friends to sit with. Sometimes we find God, be- cause we expect to, or because we don't. “Go in peace. For the hectic days filling our weeks, the words seem ironic, but they are a signal. We gather our books, and wait in turn to smile, to get our mail, to dribble up the long steps to the next class. Lips bend to smiles and mouth words. Shining eyes close in reverence. Hallelujahs filter through the room in slow waves. Ut- terances of Jesus and Lord impre- gnate the air. Someone turns to me. I get edgy and hot. Uncomfortable. They smile. I grip the linings of my pockets to keep my arms from floating. I look away and hum. My pockets are the only hosts of hands. All others join above heads. I wish I were home. Peo- ple beside me turn to take my hands. I grip my linings tighter. Why must I go through this? I feel the direct recipient of their prayers. But why, Lord? Why am I judged by those whose hands are higher than mine? Maybe my head is lower. Just maybe. Why should I feel guilty for having different calisthenics? Theirs is not my choice. Dan Yutzy SPIRITUAL LIFE • 173 SHEN We're stuck in an orange room. And given blank pages. The room is usually hot. But the windows are big. And open easily. The view is a good one. And it's from up here in our corner or down on the ground that we survey our lives. And try to fill the empty pages of our existence. To some it was a floor with girls on one end, and guys on the other, with a common lounge in between. To those that live there, it is a conglomeration of activities as different as the people themselves. Living there meant scribbled phone messages, figuring out the last math problem, having a backrub, and hot chocolate mix in the kitchen for 34 a scoop (please be honest). Sometimes it was talent, like Swing low, sweet chariot, scrape , and taking the cross-country guys from the floor out for steaks, or Randy doing his 100 situps in one minute and forty-eight seconds. It meant a guys chorus and fresh bread or Christmas cookies, dressing in bibs for Halloween supper and doing the Reel. It was sharing Newsweek, breakfast coffee, care packages from home and the stereo in the lounge.lt was finding someone from the floor to eat with at suppertime, and roughhousing in the lounge after the library closed, or asking the guys to help with mirror money (which got only laughs). Perhaps most of all it was popcorn, motorcycle rides, and Risk games on Saturday nights. Steve Frei, Naomi Ryman Sue Rohrer 176 • FEATURE Gary Martin This year EMC's four-year-old experiment in intentional community living expanded to include two houses. For the various students and faculty members living in the Thompson and Martin houses, group living meant learning to compromise, to be vulnerable, to give, to receive, to enjoy. At times living with over ten other people created the cramped feeling of being closed in; at times it brought security and warmth; at times it created the frustration of adapting to other people's life styles; at other times it brought about that ambiguous feeling sometimes called group spirit. Attempting to live together, to be surrounded with the same people twentyfour hours a day is taking a chance. But most people living in the communities would agree that much value can come of it; it is an experiment that should be continued. FEATURE • 177 INTRAMURALS Bob Witmer, Nancy J. Perhaps more than anything, SGA has worked at communication: with Senators being assigned to districts, and also being members of strategic administrative committees. SGA played an active role in examining Security Policies and Procedures, and the inter-relation of the Judicial System and Disciplinary Procedures. Offices were moved to the Student Center this year, with meetings being held in the Student Center Lounge, and students sitting in on the sidelines to listen in on the action. There is always the problem of response: it gave rise to Town meetings, posters, ballots, and questionaires. Sometimes it caused frustration and dead-end streets, but it also meant learning the concerns of others, and working with them, and in the end, that brought understanding. To some, it is simple: the 'Y' means Saturday Adoption, or Jail Visitation, Gospel Teams or Y church. Others have vague ideas. To the Y commissioners, and the large number of students that are involved, it provides an opportunity for involvement, with practical ways to express caring and concern in the community around them. There is a lot of work involved in organizing activities, so that students may share their knowledge, talents and time, and there are frustrations. But even more important, there is the responsibility of ministering to anyone in need. From mutual concern and effort, comes the bond of working as a body, and sharing Christ.
