Surely we have glimpsed a vision of perfection. Paul Brubaker family A reasonably finite world in which human beings are known to each other as brother and sister. Paul Brubaker Community. Caring. I am interested in assisting the Mennonite Church to excellence in Christian higher education.” “Despite the rules that I couldn’t agree with and the rebellion I felt as a student, I did find worth here; and that is basically why I’m back now.” “Salary is not a question. It was the Lord’s leading that brought me here.” “The great thing about EMC is that they are always working to improve it.” “I feel that I can communicate with students and help them with their problems, problems that I faced when in college.” “Teaching at EMC affords further exploration as to what the Mennonite tradition means.” “Salaries really aren’t that bad, and are improving.” “If the college were unable to adequately support me, I would have to move on.” These faculty statements were made to members of a SIIEN Study Group using a random sample prepared by Dr. John Henry Hess. All faculty portraits are by James L. Bowman, Photogra- phy Editor. 18 BIBLE AND PHILOSOPHY Conrad G. Brunk, Philosophy Harold H. Good, New Testament J. D. Graber, Missions Chester K. I don’t think the church is facing this, and it can’t go on like this much longer.” There isn’t what one calls academic freedom here, but one does not expect it.” There is a great deal of academic freedom here with no pressure against voicing dissenting per- sonal beliefs.” Faculty members should not have to be in agreement with administrative policies.” If they allow us to stay, they’ve got to give us the freedom to speak and teach as we wish.” If a liberal education should be anything, it should liberate the student to explore all areas of knowledge.” One has the tendency to become narrow since many people think the same on basic issues.” EMC’s academic climate is a cross between a pampered hothouse and a place for the survival of the fittest.” P. Where is change to be found? A look at the regulations and administration policies shows only minimal response to student pres- sures. Chapel continues five times weekly, small prayer groups are in evidence, and the YPCA flourishes. What, then, accounts for these words that imply a fading of the old? THIS SECTION WAS WRITTEN BY A SHEN RESEARCH GROUP USING A SUR- VEY OF FRESHMEN, SENIORS, AND RECENT ALUMNI SELECTED AT RAN- DOM. STUDENTS Lamar Seibel A survey of student opinion uncovered attitudes like this: “I have been surprised and delighted by the texture of thought represented on campus, and the humanness of a lot of people... During the recent drive for library funds, many students became excited for the first time about their school’s future and incident- ly gained an appreciation for the network of home churches that flashed in their support on s ort notice. Many EMC’ers who had agonized over their religious background are doing a retake of their Mennonite heritage. These same people refuse to feel apologetic about attending a small church college. They maintain that a humanly warm environment where religious questions are of prime importance can lay the groundwork for beginning one’s adult life. They cite good teacher-student rela- tionships and classroom emphasis as examples. “EMC allows me to explore and grow in an environment close to my life style.” —Senior “EMC doe more than educate students out of textbooks. It offers an atmosphere of interchange and openness.” —Senior “I have been made aware of my anabaptist heritage yet I feel the school tries to transcend denominationalism.” —Senior “One exciting feature about EMC is the unity of the faculty, students and administrators.” —Senior “Faculty? I expected them to be friends as well as teach- ers. They are.” Vermeil Belton, Louise Wenger —F reshman What could be causing this trend which would seem to head the young ones straight into the lap of the mother church? One important influ- ence is the nation’s “student movement.” Its op- position to the smooth, money-making code of the middle class is, to some EMC’ers, one of the more consequential types of nonconformity. They begin to view some of the principles of Mennonite life as valid alternatives to the mind- less “rat race” that determines so many adult lives. Student unrest has also encouraged, with mixed results, a more critical attitude toward EMC administration policies. “I see the basis of Mennonite teachings as a call to radical life styles.” —Senior “I think EMC prepared me to feel uncomfortable in soci- ety but at the same time to accept that discomfort.” —Alumnus ‘‘Students should participate in administration and their opinions should be sought and considered.” —Freshman “The Mennonite Church swallows the U. S. middle class standards without even burping.” —Senior Efforts to relate to the community, such as tu- toring, Saturday Adoption, community or- ganization, gospel teams, and peace demonstra- tions, then take on new importance as students strive to break the silence of past years and to determine the nature of their college’s rela- tionship to the world. Art Gish “Middle class complacent Mennonitism doesn’t survive too well here. Students either chuck it or find out the reason for what they are doing.” —Senior “I would like to see EMC become an island of social enlightenment in a southern wasteland.” —Alumnus “The most unique thing about EMC is its outreach to the community.” —Alumnus “Students don’t seem to have the time for spiritual things now like they once did.” —Alumnus 41 This year saw unprecedented participa- tion by students in administration ac- tivities. While on some campuses oc- cupation of buildings was necessary to evoke genuine concern from adminis- trators, EMC administrators frequently chose to devote committee time to student requests. And their committees were increasingly peopled by student representatives. “EMC should become increasingly student governed with board meetings open to students.” —Senior “I think students should have some voice, but not the final word.” —Alumnus “Student government has been very successful because of the caliber of its leaders.” —Senior “We need student power. It need not be a dreaded, feared thing.” —Senior 42 There are many students who do not identify with the youth movement but who have been inspired, perhaps un- consciously, by other national trends. We cite the growing minority group consciousness as a second influence. Black, brown, and red pride seem to imply that there is ethnic richness to be found in realizing the distinctive, rather than imitating the general. “I would like to see an EMC where Christianity is the language of the people.” —Freshman “I think students are more informed Mennonites when they leave, but their concept of Mennonitism is also broadened.” —Alumnus “I have realized the uniqueness of Mennonites and am proud to be one.” —Alumnus “Ties with the Mennonite Church are often maintained at the expense of honesty on the part of teachers and students. pr- Bornberger, Dr. Brunk, Judy Martin, —Freshman Mr. Wenger 43 Community suspicion and even hostility toward the peace position has drawn many who were rhther passively Mennonite into the heat of the battle. Much of the hot air expended served to fan the flames of conviction and allegiance to “the position.” We would call outside opposition an important stimulant to ethnic and religious loyalty. Can we say that this will mean a real re- turn to the fold after a brief look at the “world”? Hardly. The appreciation of Mennonite culture is also accompanied by a rejection of past Mennonite behavior that has seemed to say that we are neither of nor in the world. Many students are not yet convinced that the church knows how to be in the world. This desire to penetrate society is likely to result in more enthusiasm for the principles of the past. Reconciliation, for example, will come into its own as a basic tenet of non-resistant thought and action. “During my years at EMC I went from a defensive faith to confusion to cynicism and back to a guarded, tentative faith.” —Senior “EMC produces church leaders who are aware of the role the church needs to play in social problems.” —Senior “I am in agreement with the doctrines of the Mennonite church but I hope it will become more Anabaptist.” —Freshman “I think my religious thinking was very restricted to the confines of Mennonite culture and thought.” —Alumnus 45 Duane Yoder Wliat will be the college community’s response to the student mood? Will it be able to adapt to their needs and even anticipate them? The venture into the core course coupled with the willingness to share committee voting power with students implies that the answer is yes. Still we might ask: Will it distinguish between cultural and religious prac- tices, so that both can be more fully realized? Will it anticipate (and stimulate) increased social awareness of students in its recruitment of faculty members who can give leadership? Can its Mennonite tradition of layman’s equality open the door for student power that is both reasoned and reasonable? Will more honest spiritual growth be fostered through the rigorous questioning of our “religion”? Can the college avoid finding its answers by eliminating its critics? Will it pay its students the compliment of ex- posure to more speakers who must be heard with a discriminating ear? Tom Beachy, Karen Swartzendruber “I would like to see EMC stay small and promote higher academic excellence.” —Alumnus “EMC must no longer confine itself to the constituency in its search for faculty.” —Alumnus “Colleges who try to fulfill the parental role should grow up.” —Senior “After graduation I will contribute financially. I believe in the place.” —Senior “EMC should be the conscience of the church.” 48 —Alumnus SENIORS i 49 Marian Driver, Treasurer; Brenda Hummel, Secretary; Bob Brenneman, Business Manager; Bob Bishop, President; Dave Fretz, Vice President. In one week, $111,000 had to be raised or the government grant would be lost. Like some slow bear shrugging off winter’s stupification, we came to life. We went to Harrisonburg and sang while other students accepted donations. Car-washing and wax- ing brought the goal ever nearer. We cleaned chicken houses, baked pies, and chopped wood. Associated Press carried the story of a new kind of campus turmoil. Round-the-clock headquarters were es- tablished to record incoming donations and earnings, and the thermometer climbed. Monday evening we had an auction. Faculty and friends came to buy and sell—John Horst’s cello, later given back to him, Leon Moyer’s coconut mug, Erina Martin’s metal rooster sculpture, and almost everyone’s most prized possession. We cheered at each additional thou- sand recorded on the chart. Truman Brunk, Judy Clemmer, Donnie Brunk 160 Wade Shenk 161 John R. Mumaw, David Clemens, George Heatwole At 1: 30 AM President Augsburger auctioned off the bell and Ev Ressler bought it back with student dollars. Red chalk marked in §111,000 as the Unity Bell rang out EMC’s achievement. Next morning we saw the contract signed by Nielson Construction Company. Making the dream a reality, the groundbreaking ceremony reinforced the unity for which we thanked God. Mr. Harvey Schrock Mr. Dewitt Heatwole; Mr. Samuel H.
