“As I was saying, Lawrence, we welcome proselytes from the college.” Well, there they are, friends and neighbors, in all their theological splendor. Actually, you won’t have much trouble recognizing them. They’re the guys who say Shalom” to each other when they cross grocery paths in Red Fr,ont Friday night. Or better yet, see them huddled together in the Library’s Armageddon” Corner. They’ve just decided how many 200-pound angels can stand on a pinpoint. But most of the time they talk about vital issues, such as mis- sions, the nature of man, and nonresistance. (Speaking of nonresistance, though, several of these scholars have been observed in bopping sessions after a grueling Hebrew test.) 30 J. Otis unrolls Section B of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

This is the story of a seminary. This is not a tale of ascetics who are rotting in some dark alley of the Historical Li- brary, nor do these guys fast and torture themselves to be more humble. Actually, seminary students resemble humans in a great many ways. Take that tall Lincoln figure above for an example. Zehr, I think his name is. Yea, Paul Zehr. That’s Paul and his wife dining. (Seminary students sometimes eat.) In ten minutes our man is due to join his buddies in their own classroom, nestled in a corner of the Administration Building’s second floor. 29

Paul Zehr records his “Radio Deerfield” sermon. But most of the time they study. Great Hebrew Bibles, Buber, Apocryphals, and Anabaptist genealogies. Between pages they dream of a seminary sprawling over Vesper Heights in 1984. And when the library closes, Paul and his buddies go home and dry dishes. (There are exceptions to this rule). Weekends they student preach. Or listen to the news of the U.N. and the Vatican Council. Or hobnob with their faculty at a barbecue. All in all, they're quite human. In fact, one might even speak to you on the sidewalk someday with- out an appointment. Treat him kindly. One of the more handsome bachelors in the seminary. Don't ask me how he studies. Yon Mumaw has a lean and hungry look. 31
