House Editor Volume XIX Eastern Mennonite College Harrisonburg, Virginia 2 Contents Introduction Administration Seminary Faculty Students Organizations Sports Advertisements Student Index Epilogue 6 16 26 34 50 110 142 154 168 175 Hey you... Sit down a minute... And dream. Someday you’ll take your last ride up Route 11, away from the brick sprawl of E.M.C. When you do, what will you be thinking of? The days your address was “Chem Lab, U.S.A.”? The night you discovered God? The gospel of a Freudian primer? Or maybe a twig sailing the river along “One Way Only” Street’s curb, warm noses breathing holes on frosty D-room panes, and new WEATHER VANE smells. There was truth in every classroom. Buried in sepulchres of facts, yes, but the beauty of digging it out was rapturous. For each symphony of rain, each wrinkly baby, the charm of Greek faces, hook- noses, and beards there was a holy truth - this was all going to be beautiful to the next decade of E. M. C. students. And why not. For beauty is timeless, and truth is eternally beautiful. 5 3 What Is E.M.C.? Then what is EMC To you who know Is it the dream that you have built Although that dream be far From what we see Is it the hope that students bring To wilt or spring as truth may be? Or is it this, what we have seen, The hope of youth led by the fire To find itself, the dream infused. 7 8 “You say he died at noon?” Funny, I really can’t think what death’s like. I only know the young. Why can’t the world learn? Who cares if the millions in China keep spawning millions more? But man, you wanta see something good, read this little ditty by Wordsworth. And at night we play rook or read books. It’s a blast. And at night another crisis hits Cuba, but we sleep with our alarms set for six, so we can get a tennis game in before breakfast. The nectar of learning is sweet. We are the students, let us think. 9 0 But names find faces And show them, shyly at first, Alone like no other. And even as yours emerges from the loneliness of anonimity, you find on the sidewalks and hallways the loneliness of identity. Acting your part before the silent questions of knowledge. What can you do? What can I do? Why? Never mind, just show us what you can do. If it is poor we will ignore you. If it is good we will praise you. On the Dean’s list The envy of silence. We will scream your name And whistle for you If you play well. But you must show us what you can do. Is He A Person? Merely A Father Image? An Internalized Voice Of The Herd? A Psychological Phenomenon? 12 Daily Chapel Talks Religious Emphasis Week Public Lectures Personal Devotion Student Interaction Books, Faculty Stimulation Are Part of EMC’s Program To Synthesize Faith And Knowledge. 13 Dedication You have planted your mental development and moral discipline into the college which has been entrusted to you - Lonely at times, you have wrestled with problems and contained secrets which concern us deeply yet of which we are often ignorant - You have stood before congregations and before kings in our behalf - You speak from your heart and mind when you say, “Revelation is the core of truth.” When life stirs us into asking, “What is truth?”, you have not tried to feed us cliches — You have felt the awesome way that today’s decisions shape tomorrow - And now you leave your responsibility to another. We are grateful for the seventeen years of your service, and to you, President Mumaw, we humbly present this yearbook. 15 Stately men who are the committees . . . harmony of a computing mind ... smooth clicking wheels and keys ... orders for the bookstore ... stacks of IBM cards . . . those who straighten chairs and then the magazine racks... the gentle touch that dabs the cotton ... the roar of the dishwasher... This is the beauty of cooperation. 16 m :Xv President John R. Mumaw D. Sc. in Ped. Dean Ira E. Miller Ed. D. 18 f, . . President-Elect Myron S. Augsburger Th. D. Occasionally in the life of E.M.C. there comes a crisis large enough to call the Big Three together. And it has to be a big one, such as whether to build the library or athletic field next, to apply for federal aid or not to apply, or how to build up the seminary. Our photographer happened to sit in on one of those summit meetings. What’s the crisis now? Students? Wages? Building plans? t Not at all. They’re discussing the scarlets and vermilions of the falling leaves. 19 t4 Z Your Job, Laban Peachey, Ed. D. Dean of Students Evelyn E. King, MA Dean of Women Lee H. Augsburger, ThD Professor of Theology Chester K. Lehman, AM, ThD John R. Mumaw, MRE, DSc in Ped. Professor of Theology Professor of Prae. Th. J. Otis Yoder, ThD Professor of New Testament Language and Literature Seminary Faculty LEFT: College professors Linden Wenger, Herman Reitz and G. Irvin Lehman assist in the sem- inary. RIGHT: Professor I. B. Horst conducts seminary courses in church history. 28 This is the story of a seminary. This is not a tale of ascetics who are rotting in some dark alley of the Historical Li- brary, nor do these guys fast and torture themselves to be more humble. Actually, seminary students resemble humans in a great many ways. Take that tall Lincoln figure above for an example. Zehr, I think his name is. Yea, Paul Zehr. That’s Paul and his wife dining. (Seminary students sometimes eat.) In ten minutes our man is due to join his buddies in their own classroom, nestled in a corner of the Administration Building’s second floor. 29 “As I was saying, Lawrence, we welcome proselytes from the college.” Well, there they are, friends and neighbors, in all their theological splendor. Actually, you won’t have much trouble recognizing them. They’re the guys who say Shalom” to each other when they cross grocery paths in Red Fr,ont Friday night. Or better yet, see them huddled together in the Library’s Armageddon” Corner. They’ve just decided how many 200-pound angels can stand on a pinpoint. But most of the time they talk about vital issues, such as mis- sions, the nature of man, and nonresistance. (Speaking of nonresistance, though, several of these scholars have been observed in bopping sessions after a grueling Hebrew test.) 30 J. Otis unrolls Section B of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Paul Zehr records his “Radio Deerfield” sermon. But most of the time they study. Great Hebrew Bibles, Buber, Apocryphals, and Anabaptist genealogies. Between pages they dream of a seminary sprawling over Vesper Heights in 1984. And when the library closes, Paul and his buddies go home and dry dishes. (There are exceptions to this rule). Weekends they student preach. Or listen to the news of the U.N. and the Vatican Council. Or hobnob with their faculty at a barbecue. All in all, they're quite human. In fact, one might even speak to you on the sidewalk someday with- out an appointment. Treat him kindly. One of the more handsome bachelors in the seminary. Don't ask me how he studies. Yon Mumaw has a lean and hungry look. 31 Lee Kanagy Bachelor of Divinity Harrisonburg, Va. The Senior Class Michael Mast Bachelor of Divinity Fleetwood, Pa. Half-a-hundred berets and beards? Or scholars? Great musty ones peering from book-walled caves? Actually, we’ve found our professors quite human in their better moments. Take for example natural science. Not bad, eh? And math and music. You’ve gotta meet the Bible Boys. Actually, they’re probably the nearest thing to scholars we possess. Of course, we have an education depart- ment ..., ' “ pleasantly practical. Quite friendly, Mac. Quite friendly. Long ago we suspected there may be some poet-faced ones in Language Arts. Decide for yourself. (Incidentally, the Home Economics page is NOT scented with apple pie.) Finally, meet the psychology-phys. ed. crew. And that’s the faculty. All yours. 18868669 Lewis J. Place: Cluttered room of a history professor at Eastern Mennonite College. Scene: Lights are low in the small room. Empty coffee mugs lie forgotten on the floor behind a small group of students. A faint bluish light flickers in the left corner of the room, and the students watch intently, arguing and pointing excitedly at the light. As the scene opens, there is a sudden crackle of noise from the corner. Voice: “ ... is now the projected winner with 60-70% of the popular vote.” A roar of glee bursts from the students. If the day ever comes when EMC is led up before the High Tribunal to see just where in this sprawl of a college the life is, to see where the blood runs the deepest scarlet; then in that day the myriad organizations and clubs will be uncovered. Somewhere in the soul of every student an organization broods and lives on love. It may be a Peace Fellowship or UFO Club, a job on WEMC, or YPCA. You’ll find dozens of organization men, so feel free to ask them, “Who do you belong to?” So with your permission, we’d like to sorta’ dedicate these next few dozen pages to the staff of life, the clubs and organizations. Turn the page, please. CAMPUS COMMISSION (Left to Right): Gerald Stoner, Commission Chairman and Director of Campus Activities; Elaine Longenecker, Commis- sion Secretary; Blair Seitz, Director of Publicity; Marvin Glick, Director of Student Church. YPCA Is A Combination Of Rural, Y in the alphabet of any other college might stand for Ye Old Coffee House, Young Citizens for Margaret Chase, or stewed Yams for supper. At Eastern Mennonite it stands for Young People's Christian Association-a little outfit that gulped down $5800 this year and then distributed it in nice little cuds to a hundred projects. We'll tell you more about them in the next three pages. Notice the friendly president, James the Philosopher, as he is known to his disciples. He's stepped into the tracks left by Y prexies dating from John Mumaw (’22-’24), I. B. Horst, Bill Detweiler, and Sidney Schaeffer, right down through the decades until now. So scrutinize the staff. Probe and test them 'til they show their medals. James Longacre President City, Team, And Campus Work. Ask the Morning View children who their good friend is. 114 Actually, there’s a reason why the “Y” gets four pages in the Shen. They do things. If you overlook the terrifying bureauc- racy of the outfit, you’ll notice that these guys sponsor the fledg- ling Student Church, the ICC (conference with Y-officers from other colleges), Books Abroad, Y teams, and student chapel. Not bad for $5800, eh? But wait 'til you hear the rest. . . The Y's outstanding project of the year was the Student Church. That budget keeps students rolling out to churches all over the community every Sunday morning. But things are changing. YPCA is waking up to campus hungers. Gospel teams no longer travel on vacations to distant churches where they burp up nice programs. The new word is relate.” That’s snob jargon for visit- ing a city like Cleveland or Mathias, W. Va., to discover the people, learning to talk with Madison and Bridge- water students, or creating a radio program for Radio Deerfield. That all takes money and students and money and students and money and . . . So if you ever get around to creating a new alphabet, include an extra “Y” for good measure. The West Virginia service team in one of its non-serving moments. Find Them Wherever There’s Work. Gospel teams aren’t just extended gab sessions. There a thousand problems for every Clevelander to solve. In a brood- ing moment, the teams solve one. The Cleveland team was a potpourri of students from Hesston, Goshen, and EMC. In that little room under the hectic direction of Editor Rutt and Prof. Eby, EMC is dissected, analyzed and assembled from the endless gossip collected by the myriad under-lying bureau- crats,, reporters, and spies. Smithsonian, Promethean, And Zelathean EMC is an institution of tradition, and none is so entrenched as its literaries, the symbol of all things competitive and ethno- centric. But this was the year that was, the year of compromise. Dissolving the blood feuds and blending the talent, the literaries produced two conjoint programs: a mid-December presentation of Handel’s Messiah, directed by Mr. Wilbur Maust, and a production of Arthur Miller's sensitive play, The Crucible, early in the spring. Zelathean girls capture the 1964 election spirit in the opening lit rally. i i Directed by Wilbur Maust, a chorus composed of members of the three literary societies presented Handel’s Messiah to a full house shortly before Christmas vacation. An honest search for truth has kept these two clubs on the intellectual forefront of EMC this year. Peace Fel- lowship's outstanding guest Jean Lassere (author of War and the Gospel), who spoke on his radical concept of pacifism, was a needed spice to Anabaptist nonresistance. In recognition of the outstanding service of the so- ciety, Showalter Foundation granted $165.00 for an inter- campus student exchange with Virginia Union College. Earlier, SNCC volunteers in Mississippi last summer, Walt Hackman and Paul Miller, recounted their work to fellow EMCers. Inter-Collegiate Peace Fellowship met in Washington in the spring. La Sociedad Espanola broke pinatas again at Christmas and treated the society gourmets to roast pig a la apple. The two German societies topped their year with several parties in the true German tradition. Comenius Club is an ivied tradition of the college, since the education students have always made up the bulk of students. Here they form philosophies of education, discuss the values of Christian day and public schools, and create that utopian figure, “the ideal teacher.” And with the passing days, the desire to teach blows from a spark to a holocaustic urge. One of the more exclusive clubs, in fact, a sorority, is the Home Economics Club. Monthly meetings call for recipe experiments or discussions. If you overlook the formality of their business meetings and teas, the group is exposed as a practical one, trying to create a well-balanced home before the occasion demands it. You don't get past this toll gate unless you sign up, and the dining hall is on the other side. Comenius And Home Economics Clubs 133 Home Economics Club in one of their un economic moments, practicing dainty work at Miss Gehman's home. A view into that other side of EMC-the Trailer Park. Typical warm, friendly inhabitants of the Park. Trailer Park U.S.A. ... is the home of 18 giant economy, junior jumbo, special compact, and little cigar house trailers. Most of the time the trailer dwellers are students but in their better moments they baby sit while their wives work, or go to a putluck supper sponsored by the growing Married Student’s Fellowship. Of course, not all of the 90 some married students live in the Park, but the ones that do have made it into their own little corner of the world. (Although they do work — you may have noticed one fixing a window that the Park View Elementary Ball Team broke). So don’t laugh if one of them gets that other-worldly stare during class someday-he forgot to do the weekly wash before he came. Don’t cry, Johnny. International Students Club, Communications If you’re within 10 IQ points of being normal, or either side of that Great Cerebral Divide, you’ve used “communicate” at least 257 times in your conversations last year. Fortunately for the purists, we have two clubs that specialize in communi- cating: Take International Club, for example. The thirty-some members are constantly wrestling with cultural customs of their varied homelands. They showed their eagerness to help EMCers understand other peoples with the international dis- play in March. Communications Club speculates in the tech- nical end of communication: television, radio and running projectors. Highlights for the year were visits to both WSVA- Radio and the Daily News-Record offices in Harrisonburg. Milo Stahl, sponsor of Communications Club, Mark Mininger and Ken Slagell review a 15-minute movie. 135 Paul Beiler tells Charlie Delp, Chet Mast, and Clair Bange of his hours aloft. Flying Club.Astral Society The sky is not the limit when it comes to forming clubs. Witness the booming extra-terrestrial club trend on (or above) campus. Flying Club still hasn’t gotten over the thrill of its first wings —the yearling J-3 Piper Cub. Shenandoah Air- port usually sends up several club members a week. Then there’s the Astral Society, on its way back from an early ’60-s slump in membership. You may see them gazing at a quasistellar or memorizing stars. For the more imaginative students, the brand new UFO Club already promises to take over where the McCarthy Era left off. The famed Staunton sighting of a cone-shaped flying object drew over 400 Harrisonburgers and students to a club meeting, including newspaper and radio reporters. Geiger counters and interviewers went to work unearthing the facts, but the school was still riddled with “doubting Thomases.” That’s okay, Galileo and da Vinci were dubbed heretics”, too. 136 Headquarters for Astral Society are the 12-inch reflector and the 3- and 5-inch refractors. 1965 may well be remembered as the year of the Coffee House. It began in the winter with the vision of a hideout for students after hours. A little burlap-walled room with students sipping coffee, soft lights glowing through the fish-netted ceiling, and a complete hi-fi outfit. On weekends, students could meander in to get a little atmosphere” and meet friends over steamy mugs. In mid-February, the vision came true after students cleaned the rubbish from the old agriculture building, pounded boards to tree trunk sections for tables, and donated $70 to get started. That was the birth of the House. Give it two or three years until it gets the true Greenwich flavor, but it’s coming. The Coffee House crew takes a minute during the creation of their house for moody music. Drama Guild, Phoenix Every year the English 318 class (Creative Writing) turns out an anthology of creative tidbits, The Phoenix. Fresh from the realm of pre-existent beings, Drama Guild was born trailing clouds of glory.” “To give people self-expression in the art of drama ...” Of course. What else would a drama guild do? Members of Sorores Caritatis benefit from the training and experience of returned R.N.’s who are working toward their B.S. degrees. Pre-medical society draws on a wide variety of sources of materials for their programs. They use films, guest speakers, and the wealth of knowledge that osmotically filters in from their sponsor, Dr. Suter. Programs are often geared to introduce underclass premeds to the dope” they’ll need in med school, which may mean anything from studying requirements and responsibilities to arguments over the Christian doctor’s ethics. Gagged and masked for taking the Hippocratic Oath in vain is Herb Myers, president of Premedical Society. 139 Learning the gentle profession. North Lawn meeting of Sorores Caritatis. Men's Dormitory Council North Lawn General Council To keep you from getting bored by endless clubs, we inserted several groups here who keep the place ticking. Men’s and Ladies’ Dorm Councils are in charge of quelling water battles, solving all problems from missing bath soap to lovelorn students, and voting on head councilors for the Council. Din- ner Committee is not so busy since the cafeteria went into operation, but they do play Thanksgiving and Spring Banquets. 141 MS ,,;... £.$ gg There is something mystical about a smooth- limbed youth, body bent like an archer’s longbow, whirling around and around and around . . . until giddy with dancing, a discus blurs away from the body like an arm. Epilogue Spouting from the fissured rock comes Truth. And I, hid behind the slabs of limestone wall, Cannot see the fountainhead, the little spot where Bubbling up through moist oak leaves The stream named Truth begins. But judging from the sweet-steeped waters here Below the foamy rim, The mother spring must well be worth the climb, For beauty flows nearby like autumn wine. 178 179
