Text from Pages 1 - 174 of the 1964 volume:

From the mist of faces One emerges And desires Life beyond the continuum. ■wm 'l ■ '.V illll 1« HH «gSKK • . C V mo?: Dedication “And there are those who have the truth within them, but they tell it not in words. In the bosom of such as these the spirit dwells in rhythmic silence.” In rhythmic silence... you converse gravely with noble scholar, humble brother, frightened student, you contemplate the Eternal and meet us through sermon, prayer and humble act. you study and perceive the dignity of man, the values of education. In rhythmic silence... you amuse us with your subtle wit. you tip your hat to us on campus and entertain us in your home. •you walk with us tourists through the late-lit streets of New York City. In rhythmic silence... you understand us when we seek the good but know the evil, you serve as friend, counselor, example, you ennoble our school through your dignified presence, you are our Dean. IRA E. MILLER .Vi' ' Contents Introduction.......................................8 Faculty...........................................16 Students..........................................38 Organizations....................................100 Sports...........................................132 Informality......................................142 Advertisements...................................151 Epilogue.........................................171 Foreword The bud in spring... The dancing, twisted leaf in fall... Not death. But dying into re-creation. We ache And contemplate a black oak against a sullen sky, An aged weeping willow, And grasp the Life within the Unknown. We search to know the Ground of our Being, And knowing, to fulfill. Aery And man runs again to search. To stumble through briars, through empty days and nights of shuddering and pain. A fall And then the Rest Buried in heaps of dying Life. Again the weeping. The healing weeping of beginnings of knowledge of hints of answer. A Life that weeps itself out into Life. And dies into Newness. Wise instruction impresses not its worn bark on the young sapling, but awakens the sleeping bud of knowledge on the green limb; invites not the virgin tree to dwell in the shade of aged oaks, but implants life into barren plains to curve in new-born patterns toward fulfillment. Students struggle to surge meaning into the absurdities of life, to find a pattern in the course of the ages. Meaning escapes and they still peruse the thoughts of Seneca and Shakespeare, accuse the faults of monarchs and emperors. They meditate upon the mysteries of a tree, the knowledge which a century of bark conceals within its circles. ... the soaring of its branches ... the rustle of its leaves These break the secrets of the ages. The students sigh and accept the wisdom of its silence. Students Seminary George R. Brunk, Jr. Bachelor of Divinity Harrisonburg, Virginia The Senior Class A small area of the Library’s Reading Room is dubbed “The Seminary Corner.” Guarded by the magazine rack, the only signs of life here are; the four pairs of shoes visible under The Builder, Current History, Church Music, and The New Yorker, an occasional view of the tallest seminarian’s head, a walk to and fro of the Corner’s members, and bursts of laughter and conversation. Surrounded by lexicons, Greek Bibles, and wedding pictures, they earnestly pursue their work. No longer do the halls reverberate with thy Staff members’ frantic noise. No more do groans arise over deadlines to be conquered, over missing pictures and mangled layouts. Lerche, Jr. leaves the auditorium after his lecture on “The Crisis in American Foreign Policy. Promethean Officers: Mr. Grant Stoltzfus, sponsor; Carroll Lehman, president; Nancy Heinrich, secretary; Norman Shank, vice- president. The Prometheans again boast the largest membership of the three literary societies while also being the youngest. The Pro season began with the one-act play Einer Muss Heiraten and the traditional male octet rendition of “The Halls of Ivy. Pro programs included several original skits produced by Prometheans, films, and the Promethean socials which add the fourth dimension to the Promethean motto: “Procuring wisdom, promoting talent to proclaim truth.” Promethean Literary Society MS 121 Smithsonian Officers — Miss Catherine Mumaw, sponsor; Paul Brunk, vice president; Susan Yoder, secretary; Don Ziegler, presi- dent. i In The Diary of Anne Frank the Jewish families celebrate the allied invasion of Europe. The climax of the Smithsonian literary year came on February 14th and 15th as their months of preparation culminated in the presentation of The Diary of Anne Frank. Actors, directors and stagehands combined their talents to produce the play before sellout crowds both nights. Another program featured Elizabethan poetry and a madrigal group in an Elizabethan setting. Through their programs c' : y “ . Smithsonians kept up their tradition which has flourished for many years, their society being the oldest on campus. Another scene from the play shows a tense moment when news comes that someone may suspect that Jews are hiding in the attic home. 1 22 06110034 The Civil War March of the Zelatheans ends in recovery from the mild injuries and refreshments. Zelathean Officers: Miss Audrey Shank, sponsor; Emma Longenecker, secretary; Kenneth Reed, vice- president; Stan Godshall, president; Rachel Alderfer, treasurer. From the silence, embarrassment, and refused love of two brothers, the Zelatheans proceeded on a Civil War Centennial march complete with speeches and battle scenes. Perhaps the most unusual program of the year featured North Lawn's invasion of the new men’s dorms to pick up their dates for the twirp” taffy pull. From here the Zelatheans proceeded through a year of fun and serious literary effort. Zelathean Literary Society The love affairs of two brothers and their friend become quite entagled in the Zelatheans’ rally program. Humanitarian Pacificism provided the jumping-off point for Dr. Paul Peachey’s lecture to Peace Fellowship and Mennonite Historical Society. Peace Fellowship The interest and vitality of these two clubs seems to indicate the search among EMC students for the uniqueness of the Anabaptist faith and its relevance to the world of rockets and relativity. Their method features interchange around a topic picked by the society for the year. Several times the two societies combined to hear the same speaker and discuss together the implications of the lecture on the life of the Christian. Peace Fellowship this year sponsored an oratorical contest and the drama No Man is an Island as its annual project. The society presented a resume of the results of these projects at the Intercollegiate Peace Fellowship held at Goshen. They also participated in the discussion of the problem “Integration of the Northern Churches” at this conference. - Mennonite Historical Society President Don Bender opens the first meeting of the Mennonite Historical Fellowship. 124 Northlawn General Council Student Dinner Committee Men’s Dormitory Council UHURU” for Kenya. Married Students Fellowship The trailer park of Park Woods and the apartments of Park View empty once a month and the residents collect to share the joys and sorrows of being married students at college. Their meetings are sometimes instructional, sometimes strictly social gatherings, but always end in informal sharing of common experiences. The addition of food, fun, and children to this club make it one of the unusual meetings of Thursday evening schedule. International Club Don Augsbergen with the help of 3 skit leads a discussion on child training. The sum of the addition of six newly-independent East Africans, a German bishop, a kind, meditative Japanese gentleman, and two young Mexican senoritas, etc. is a group which calls itself the International Club. The gentleman from Jordan must speak English to understand the Kenyan, but they find that they are both struggling with the same problem. They discuss it and bring it to one of their other International Club friends or their sponsor, Dean Miller, and r in the process of solution. 126 The big event in the Home Economics Club’s program this year was a dual-meeting composed of a fashion review, featuring clothing made in one Home Economics course, and the open house of the Home Management House which serves as the residence of the senior Home Economics students. Despite the apparent formality of their business meetings and teas, the group strives for that elusive point of moderation which combines practical knowledge and skill with the art of etiquette and courtesy. Comenius Club, taking its guiding principles from its founder John Amos Comenius concentrates on the education and preparation of those who are training to teach others. The club attempts to enlarge the vision of the training teacher by introducing him to new teaching methods, other educational systems, and the experiences of others in his profession. Home Economics Club Comenius Club At Christmas Kenneth Seitz informed Comenius Club members of the school system in Mexico; Helmut Esau told of the system in Germany and Julius Mattijo of the system in East Africa. These two fellowships representing the medical world and interests of EMC students have much in common in their programs of introduction to their respective professions. The members of Sorores Caritatis benefit from the training and experience of those Registered Nurses who have returned to EMC to obtain their B.S. degree. This introduction to the life of a nurse is a welcome addition to the freshman nursing students who will be leaving for a three-year nurse’s training period. The Pre-Medical Society draws on a wide variety of sources of material for their programs. They use films, guest speakers, and the wealth of knowledge, that comes through experience of their sponsor, Dr. Suter. Often their programs are geared to introduce underclass pre-meds to the possibilities, requirements, procedures, and responsibilities of entering medical school and the resulting medical profession. Sorores Caritatis The registered nurses of Sorores Caritatis show how and how not to do it. The singing nurses Pre-Medical Society Dissecting cats prepares Pre-meds for Gross Anatomy in med school. Astral Society members watch the setting sun and the brightening stars in the shadow of Astral Hall. The silence of a still starry night still calls students of astronomy and students of God and nature to the crest of the hill one Thursday night of each month to absorb some of the possible meanings of the celestial order. Through telescopes, films, lectures, and the wisdom of others they attempt to comprehend the magnitude, order, and meaning of the stars. Astral Society Leon Good and Alvin Swartzentruber check over the J-3 Piper Cub purchased by the Aviation Club. Aviation Club Aviation Club has been rejuvenated this year by the purchase of a 1946 J-3 Piper Cub by their association. For an initial fee to join the club plus an hourly flying fee for instruction and maintainence, the members can obtain their licenses at a considerable saving. The club is presently composed of sixteen members and the enthusiasm of those members' description of the Shenandoah valley from 5000 feet on a clear day promises to keep the Aviation Club growing. I y kl 129 Der Deutsche Verein and the Pennsylvania Dutch Society meet together to enjoy Mr. Gehman's pictures and comments. Der Deutsche Verein Herr Gehman, sponsor of German and Pennsylvania Dutch clubs, leaves in his German Volkswagen. The annual pig roast begins with smoke and volunteer cooks. La Sociedad Espanof 1 TO Mr. Miller, sponsor of Spanish Society, smiles on his way to class. Bible School Fellowship Seminary students, Bible and philosophy majors, and interested members of the faculty and student body meet every Tuesday evening for Bible School Fellowship. The group hears sermons, lectures, and group discussions on a variety of religious topics. Guest speakers and faculty members from other disciplines add to the variety of the programs. This unique club meets once a month on a Sunday afternoon with their sponsor, Mrs. Ruth S.S. Hostetter, to study and recite the portions of the Bible that they are memorizing. Memory is the key word of the club but an understanding of the Word is emphasized so that knowledge and practice of the principles will both be contributing factors in the memorization. President Mumaw shares his ideas on the ordinance of baptism with Bible School Fellowship. Bible Memory Club Bible Memory Club members listen closely as Glenda Swartz recites. 131 i A skier flies down a mountain slope — An oarsman steels himself to fight the nearing rapids - - - Man fights nature and knows the loneliness of defeat or the sudden warmth of victory. The athlete sends the ball neatly through the basket — or intercepts the football spiralling toward an opponent - - - Man faces man and knows the approving cheers of the crowds or the disdainful silence from the bleachers. And so the Game continues Man loses or wins. His loss is dull and routine, clothed in familiarity. His win is ephemeral as the sun’s rays breaking the darkness of a pine forest, and fades into fleeting shadows - - - a mere remembrance of things past. Yet this victory is the soul of life, the food upon which the centuries of growth live, and the Force that sharpens the knife of survival buried deep in the heart of Everyman. SPORTS Sam Kupl breaks past the last Zelathean defender on his way to aT.D. Quarterback Dick Shank of the Smithsonians under the fire of a determined Promethean rush cocks his arm to throw one of his 10 touchdown passes. The literary football season was the closest in the history of the league. The perennially champion Smithsonians were forced this year to share first place with the Zelatheans and the Prometheans. Each team had a 4-2 record. Individual leaders were the Promethean’s Ernie Miller and Ernest Martin, the Smithsonian’s Dick Shank and Paul Layman, and the Zelathean’s Dick Heatwole and Stan Godshall. 134 The league’s leading ground-gainer, Ernie Miller of the Prometheans, receives a pitchcut for a power play around end. I I I I Ernie Martin bursts through the line on a delayed buck. Second Row: Coach Eugene Hostetter, manager Frank Showalter, Ross Holmes, Conrad Brunk, manager Stuart Show- alter. Back Row: Gene Shelly, Dick Shank, Paul Beiler, Roy Brenneman. In the locker room at halftime the Smith players show weariness and unity of spirit. Oren and Conrad slap for the ball as each has four teammates coiled for quick movement. Paul Beiler goes up for a jump shot against defender Dick Shank. The Independents battle the Z’s for a rebound, and Frederick gets two hands on the ball. Dick Shank begins his spin for his discus throw. Buzz shows determination, even if he is not as low as he should be in the 120 yard high hurdles. Track official is intent on his job of timing the first place sprinter. Pushed all the way by the high school’s Robert Hampton, Art Zehr runs 140 down College Avenue. For some the mist is impenetrable. They stay in the eternal gloomy world of formality. For some the mist is impenetrable. They stay in the evanescent bright world of informality. Most can pass ghostlike at will from world to world. The dual personality of Everyman gives him the depth of a well and the interest of a well-developed story. Catching him in an unsuspecting moment, we see man for what he is. 143 John Miller expresses the fine touch necessary to spin the ball into the basket. The complete works of Shakespeare lie bound on the bed, but Priscilla reaches first for a glove. Mr. and Mrs. Heatwole check the day’s supply of milk. Dean of Men Alphie Zook uses the opportunity to get back at his dorm fellows by lashing out a base hit during School Day Out. On an ecology field trip, Mr. Hostetter explains the progress from a cultivated field to a climax forest. I find that ideas for the trickiest exam questions come to me when I water my flowers, says Old Testament History professor Herman Reitz. Rosario, dressed in Mexican formal attire, enjoys the Thanksgiving Banquet program. 145 146 The Shennandoah editor breezes out across the campus trying to escape the horrors of his staff for several moments. Mr. Maust patiently directs his Men's Chorus through its paces. The two faithful steeds stand waiting for their masters. Sandy and Elva thought it was fun for a while, but now things are getting a little scary. Mr. Mullenex wows the Freshmen at their social by performing a balancing act. There is the entrance to the parking lot for student amphibious machines. Carl Swartz makes friends quickly at a basketball game. Luke pauses a moment from his maintenance work to absorb some fall sunshine. Annie escapes into the outside dream world. 'For a special treat, I surprise you with ice cream. And then some students like to spend their between-class hours angling. Spanish professor Sam Miller and his wife enjoy School Day Out at Lost River State Park. 149 Clouds lift themselves over the mountains and lumber across the valley, dropping snow on the city and on the spruce forest. Forest and city are equalized. The rural dweller is dependent upon the town; The city dweller dependent alike upon the forest and farm. The intersection of business’ efficiency and nature’s freshness produces the regal combination of work and relaxation.
