NIARK ST.-XUFFER Dl'1.'XR SICNIORSI The present moment that finds us seated here together is a tense, solemn one. To many of you, it is the fulfillment of your fondest dream,-an answer to prayer. The privilege you have had in attending a conservative church school dare not be lightly esteemed. As a faculty, we have tried to write the school motto, Tm' XVORD Is TRUTH, indelibly upon your keen, fertile minds. Vvithout forgetting your physical, intellectual, and social development, we have felt burdened to lay special stress upon your spiritual growth in an attempt to prepare you for future service to God. Because you have been students at this school you have a greater obligation than ever before. Increased knowledge and experience brings in- creased responsibility. Each of you has a pro- found obligation to God, the Church, your parents, this school, your home community, our government, and to the great mass of people who are suffering from physical and spiritual starvation. Vvhile at school you have had many opportunities to develop your talents and to learn the conservative Christian way of life. This has added to your respon- sibility, and now as you are about to leave us, our sentiment as a faculty is expressed in the words of the Apostle lohn in his third epistle, verse four, I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. You are about to leave the atmosphere of E.lVI.S. and return to your respective home communities. The world in which you will find yourself is filled with war and with all its attendant evils. The duration and outcome of this conflict is unpredictable. Besides this, the world in which we live has gone mad after pleasure and money: it is intellectually irreligious: it is socially corrupt: it is desperately in need of a Saviour. ln the face of all this and the fact that around you men's hearts are failing them for fear, l ask you to have the strength and courage of a Christian soldier. Your class motto, LORD, DIRECT Us, is undoubtedly the most appro- priate prayer that you can pray at this time. The days that lie before you will demand great strength and stability to live victoriously. You will want to live beneath the shadow of the cross and with the power and vitality of our risen Lord: you will need to fortify your hearts with prayer and the invincible Yvord of God. Finally, vou will be required to give yourself wholly to God and allow Him to mold and direct vour lives for His service. Dear Seniors, l bid you farewell. May the Lord bless you and keep you. These privileges were all granted to us in very definite ways. Since the dormitories were practically filled, most of us were wel- comed into near-by homes. The dining room at school had been enlarged before we arrived, and we had splendid accommodations there. Chang- ing tables twice a week give occasion for making many new acquaintances. The program which was arranged for the special students was not all study: the social committee had planned recreational activities to relax our minds. On one of the first evenings a Get-:Xcquainted Social was held. A climb up blassanutten Peak, a visit to Natural Bridge, a visit to Natural Chimneys, and also a visit to Endless Caverns were memorable trips to all who took advantage of them. The Berean and blennovian literary societies, which were organized especially for us, were a means of giving experience and practice in debating, singing, and speaking. Helping with the Y.P.C..'X. work was a spiritual inspiration to every- one who took part in such activities as distributing The llfzy, assisting in the jail services and cottage meetings, and visiting the almshouses. Many were led to reconsecrate their lives to the Lord through the influence of the mission meeting, the winter revivals, and the Christian Life Confer- ence. For the first time the special term students enjoyed a commencement exercise of their own this year. Bro. Irvin Lehman gave a commence- ment address for five students who had completed three, six-week terms of Bible studies. This brought to a close the wonderful experiences we en- joyed atl1i.Nl.S. this year. It was enough to make us realize what blessings are in store for those who attend a Christian school. -Ruth H. Others can tell of the joy in comforting the peo- ple who live in the city and county almshouses. VVorking for Christ is not confined to the valley, however. Calls from various sections of the church have been answered by week-end Gospel tours. An itinerary group has taken the Vvater of Life to the spiritual deserts in the Kentucky Highlands during the past several summers. Still others have done their part in help- ing to send literature to the many Jews in the large cities of Virginia. In addition to financing local work, the yearly budget also includes the missionary work which is sponsored by the church in Europe and Africa. The Lord has richly blessed the work of the Y.P.C.A., and we want Him to have the glory for every ac- complishment. YVe rejoice that we can be workers together with God. Lester Eshleman. But scrapbooks--they 11re different. Scrapbooks l111ve ll peculiar share-ability 11ll tl1eir own. for tl1ere before you are tl1e trophies of 11ll tl1e good times of tl1e year. ln tl1em you see ll cross section of l'f.XI.S. life. Ir is fun to lL'1ll- tl1ro11gl1 ll scrapbook. and see again tl1e place cards used llf tl1e special t11bles: it is ll kind of delicacy to read 2llNlUf tl1e bounti- ful meals served over tl1e pink lllltl green napkins. No lf. Nl. S. scrapbook would be complete without ll little blue. grey. or green hook of rules pron1inently gracing tl1e front PRIQC. It is no doubt tl1e studying of these rules. and tl1e applying of IllClIl tl111t fosters tl1e gath- ering of tl1e other materials into tl1e great book. There are printed slips which informed you fllllf il speci11l p11rt of tl1e Young l'eople's Nleeting program. or the lfriday Nlorning Devotion period. or Special Prayer Nleeting depends upon you. Neatly printed slips are sometimes used for no more th11n to say you owe tl1e oflice an ironing fee. Book bills follow closely in tl1e beginning days of school. .X Nlount Vernon tree yielded a lovely big leaf which found its way. behind eellophane. into tl1e memory book. lfinger l'rint Souvenir cards also serve 213 11 memoir of the College XX'ashington Tour. .X bit of wood from tl1e woods brings back fond lllL'IllHI'lL'S of tl1e entert11inment by tl1e f11culty 11t Hone Quarry. Name lists of the special groups for pr11yer circles remind us of answered pr11yer during tl1e revival meetings. The reverence and tl1e spiritual nourishnlent of tl1e Nlission llrayer Xleeting come to tl1e front of tl1e memory as tl1e prayer request c11rds are reread. .X n1isl11id postcard announcing the retarded opening of school has finally been safely pasted into tl1e almost wordless volume. XX'e couldn't forget the late beginning of school if the card were not there. because classes on an occasional Saturday are sufficient evidence that some time has been lost. .X daily cleaning of the room may have made the owner of a mimeo- graphed inspection sheet happier to display without the minus. YYrappings, greetings, notes, ribbons speak loudly for the holiday season. A vacation would seem good again. Report cards when kept can be an incentive for more studying, a source of regret for past mistakes, or a pleasure. Others may scan them if they appear pasted to a scrapbook leaf. Nlaybe a diary would be the best after all. Special Bible Term Bulletins are so inclusive, so interesting. 'lihey include the Mission, Christian Life Conference, and Nlinisters' XVeek programs. New things are always fascinating, the spacious new library here is no exception-pictures displaying the arches along the mezzanine: the newspaper racks and the rows of books all stand forth: the former two being novelties. .X paper of new rules finds its place below the snapshots. Natural Bridge, Endless Caverns, and Natural Chimneys yield an abundance of souvenir folders for the scrapbook fans. It is never pleasant to think about the end of something enjoyable, but you wouldn't Want school to go on forever: so there is a bright side to the recallings of latter school events. A cardboard spoon and fork have been autographed and spared for the sake of the Junior-Senior Outing. Name scrambles. wrappings from candy bars, and perhaps a piece of string are reminiscences of class sponsor entertainments. .X lonesome feeling steals nearer as you look at the commencement announcements, cards of congratulations. gift wrappings. 'lihe end has come and you are ready to begin another scrapbook, or maybe this will be a personal affair-a diary. -Margaret Horst.
