Let’s Face It Not everything that is faced can be changed but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” This statement is the motto of the class of 1974. It truly signifies a prevalent ' spirit and attitude of the time in which we live. It is a proper description of the challenge which all of us must be ready to accept if we are to be responsible citizens. This motto might very well be a credo for life. Each one of us has to be aware of the fact that nothing really can be changed or accomplished in any endeavor if we are unwilling to accept our share of responsibility for bringing about change. If this world is to become a better one, then each of us must be aware of the fact that there are problems and condi¬ tions that cannot be ignored. Class of 1974, your motto is a good one. If you personally practice it, you will be able to develop a feeling of accomplishment that will mark you as a person who will try to responsibly do his or her best to improve the quality of life in our time. Best wishes and congratulations to each of you. May your days in school always be a beacon to guide you to even greater accomplishments. Kenneth R. The teachers of our Social Studies Department open the doors to the problems of our world. They help us learn about the way our government operates and the benefits we can receive. With the knowledge that we have received from them we start to build a foundation of mutual understanding. Mr. Edward Souders Miss Lorena DeCoux x ' 18 Mr. Walter Hess Mr. Donald Kugle ■ Mr. Richard Brubaker What greater or better gift can we offer the Republic than to teach and instruct our youth? Cicero 19 Science v How far away are the stars? What is beneath the oceans? How do we breathe? Curiosity is a vital characteris¬ tic of the scientifically minded person, and the science teachers display this curiosity. Their interest helps to instill within the students this desire to ques¬ tion and investigate our environment. Mr. John Wessner ii 20 Mr. David Freeze He teaches who gives and he learns who receives. Emerson Mr. Gerald Strickler Mr. Harold Donley Mr. John English !t X. Mathematics In mathematics, as in almost no other sub¬ ject, it is essential to build from the ground up. Instructions start with basic arithmetic. This is followed by algebra, geometry, trigo¬ nometry, advanced math, and later even higher maths. The math teachers know the importance of a systemic progression in learn¬ ing math. Therefore they work close together to provide the high school students with a good solid program of math instruction. Mr. Conrad Stumpf Mr. Gary Good Mr. Richard Stick 22 Mr. Rodney Frazer Not only is there an art in knowing a thing, but also a certain art in teaching it. Mr. Stanley Brossman Music and A rt Students taking band or chorus are introduced to a great variety of different types of music. As with the music courses, the art student is likewise exposed to the different kinds of art which are presented in the program. Mr. Joachim Eisenblaetter — Art Mr. David Adams — Vocational Agriculture 24 Mr. Ronald Brewer — Industrial Arts Home-Ec, Shop, Vo-Ag Courses in Home Economics, Vocational Agriculture, and Industrial Arts are offered for those pupils interested in such things as cooking, farming, wood-working, and auto-mechanics. In these classes, they gain valuable experience which will be very beneficial in future years, whether it be for a vocation or an avocation. Mr. Richard Levandusky — Industrial Arts Phys. Ed. and Driver Ed. One important aspect of education is building a sound body. The health and physical education departments give us the opportunity to learn how our bodies function and a chance to use this knowledge in order to have healthier bodies and minds. The goal of the driver education department is to give students a knowledge of safe-driving techniques and a desire to use them. If implemented, the roads will surely be safer for everyone. Mr. Ronald Kochera — Physical Education Mr. Wilbur Spangler Athletic Director and Driver Ed. Miss Nancy Morris Physical Education Mr. Lyle Krall — Physical Education 26 Miss Cheryl Geib — German Mr. William Slike — Spanish Special Education and Languages Those students who need more personal instruction may receive help in the special education class. Under the guidance of Mr. Arbogast, they are able to develop their potential more fully. Students are offered two foreign languages at Elco. In both of these, whether German or Span¬ ish, the student learns grammar and vocabulary and has practice speaking the language. 27 Business Students taking courses in business acquire skills that will enable them to find a place of employment in the business world. Courses offered include business law, bookkeeping, shorthand, typing, and business math. With the instructions received from the teachers of this department many former students have found respectable positions in the community. Mr. Frank Deaner 28 Mr. Robert Stettler Mr. George McDonald Miss Darlene Miller Mrs. Lena Saunders He is wise who can instruct us and assist us in the business of daily virtuous living. Carlyle Language A rts There are many different areas of instruc¬ tion for students in the language arts pro¬ gram. Courses such as creative writing, popu¬ lar fiction, great books, seminar of ideas, grammar, and advanced reading are offered. The objective of having a larger number of electives is to give students, especially those in the upper grades, a chance to take courses that are of the most interest to them. Mr. Miles McDonald Mrs. Monica Romito S ' Mr. John Loftus Albert Einstein 31 Raider Runners The Cross-country team at Elco continued to improve as this year’s harriers posted a near .500 record. Coached by Mr. David Dubble, the runners were led by Randy Brandt, Bob Wright, and Jim Mahaffey, who were consistently among the top finishers. These boys put more time and effort into their running than many would believe and deserve congratulations for a job well done. 34 Row 1: L. Sheetz, T. Morgan. Row 2: R. Troutman, B. Holdren, G. Swanger, M. Hemperly. This year’s golf team compiled a sub-par record. Rick Troutman, their num¬ ber one man had an outstanding season, often shooting in the 60’s. However, the Raiders had a young team and can be expected to make good showings in the years to come. Fore! 35 Our Girls in Kilts The hockey team did not enjoy a winning record this year, but there was outstanding team play during the season. The girls’ capabilities were best displayed during the annual Hockey Day, held this year at Manheim Central High School. They finished with a 2-0-4 record for the day and the two co-captains, Donna Spangler and Robbie Blumenshine, were named to the all-star roster. JUNIOR VARSITY — Row 1: L. Swingholm, P. Schneck, K. The Raiders won the Leba- non-Lancaster League Championship and also the Northern Lebanon Booster’s Tournament, com¬ piling a 15-2-1 log. They were led by six League All Stars: Kirk Pearson, voted the league’s Most Valuable Player, Gary Yeagley, Daryl Neiswender, Jim Seager, Robin Miller, and Frank Nolt. Pearson and Neiswender were also selected for the 1973 All-State High School Soccer Team. The Raiders finally bowed in District play to a stubborn Twin Valley team, but their reputation for fine soccer playing remained the same. JUNIOR VARSITY — Row 1: S. Tice, C. Stechman, S. Harris, F. This year the squad did not lose a single league game and finished with a 7-2-1 record. Sharing the Section II title of the Lebanon-Lancaster Football League, the Raiders placed five men on the league’s All-Star Team. They were George Achey, Barry Arnold, Barry Brunner, Kevin Findley, and Andrew Kapp. In addition to these honors, head football coach, Fred Poor- man, was named coach of the year.” % VARSITY — Row 1: D. Each class feverishly gathered lumber for the Woodstock contest, the pie eating contest proved to be hilarious, and even though Saturday’s sports events were threatened by rain, the enthusiasm of the players and fans was not quenched at all. The activities were climaxed with the football team’s victory over Donegal and the crowning of Michelle Reedy as Homecoming queen. ■. - 52 ! 56 I Student Government, YEA Student Government is . . . sponsoring Homecoming and watching the woodpiles grow, hav¬ ing a pie-eating contest, collecting and counting the money from the magazine campaign, writing your name for the WIFI school spirit contest, working in the snackbar during the mad rush at the halftime of a basketball game, trying to find paints to make posters for the gym, paying the bills nobody else has the money for, and then starting all over again, making an activity calendar, filled with dates to remember, athletic events to support, and activities sponsored by the Student Gov¬ ernment, for the next school year. The YEA or Youth Education Association consists of students who are interested in furthering their education after high school. Under the supervision of Mrs. Gail Hibshman and Mr. Ronald Kochera, the YEA operated refreshment stands at home football and basketball games and was also responsible for the publication of the school newspaper. Other activities included a skiing trip in the Pocono Mountains and the annual banquet in spring at which the teacher of the year was announced. Scholarships were also presented to two outstanding seniors. 59 Tri-Hi-Y, Hi-Y, German Club r I TRI-HI-Y — Row 1: C. Ulrich, C. Gardner, J. Yoder, E. Vartienen, D. Spangler, R. Dull, K. Suppes, D. Beginning in fall with the start of school, 4 the Tri-Hi-Y busily prepared for Homecoming activi¬ ties. Holding meetings regularly, the next important event for the club was the Valentine Pageant and Dance. Fund raising activities included a Fashion Show and a Smorgasbord. To conclude the year’s activities, the Tri-Hi-Y honored the teachers at a recognition dinner and the senior members of the Tri-Hi-Y at a final farewell dinner. The Hi-Y, an organization backed by the YMCA, is very active in most schools. The local club helped the Tri-Hi-Y arrange the Valentine Dance and went to some hockey games. Participation in other activi¬ ties, however, was limited because of the small membership. It is hoped that in future years the club will again become one of the larger organiza¬ tions in the school. This year’s German Club was comprised of Ger¬ man students who were interested in furthering their knowledge of the German way of life. This was done by viewing films and going to Bears’ hockey games!? i ii 60 HI-Y — Row 1: R. Brandt — Vice-Pres., K. Phillips — Treas., R. Stamm — Chap. Row 2: S. Cole, J. Griffe — Sec., D. Mary Horst and Robbie Blumenshine displayed fine defensive work, while Lisa Weinhold and Carol Deck supplied most of the scoring punch for Miss Morris’ girls. Under the able mentoring of Coach Loftus, the Raiders had their most successful season ever. Led by the rebounding and scoring of Rick Troutman and Barry Arnold, the Raiders entered District play for the first time ever. Rick and Barry were ably assisted by the play-making, fast-breaking, and out¬ side shooting of Jon Gyorke and Kirk Pearson and also by fine defensive work and rebounding from Jeff Shutter. Overall, the Raiders did not fare very well, but there were many bright spots in Coach Kochera’s lineup. As in past years, Dave Bowman proved once again that he is one of the best wrestlers in the area in his weight class. Jim Morgan also showed an impressive win-loss record and sophomore Kenny Reich, judging by this year’s performance, will certainly be one of the most outstanding wrestlers in the league in future years. The staff would like to extend their appreciation to those individuals whose understanding and cooperation made it a possibility — Mr. Maurice Upton, the official yearbook photographer, the firms that placed ads in the yearbook, David Fetter and Mr. Eisenblaetter, who cooperated with supplementary photography, the administration and faculty, Mr. Amby Nolan, representative of the Taylor Publishing Co., and all those not mentioned by name. We hope that the book will be as meaningful to you as it is to those of us who gave our time to produce it. YEARBOOK — Row 1: K. Bortz, K. Suppes, V. Hickemell, R. Dull, M. Reedy, J. Yoder, K. Youth Forum is a group of students in the school united for the purpose of discussing problems affecting our lives today. The students hold regular meetings and attend a Youth Forum Day, held this year at Palmyra High School, to discuss problems with students from thirty three other senior high schools. To climax the year’s activities, an evening program was held at the William Penn Museum, with a sum-up of the important events of the year. Library Club The Library Club, consisting of about 40 members, is primarily a service organization, existing for the benefit of the student body. Duties include carding, checking out, and shelving books and magazines, and distribut¬ ing A-V equipment and materials. During the year, the club had several recreational eve¬ nings in the gym, and at the end of the year, a picnic was held for the members and their guests. This year’s tri-class-play, a mystery-comedy, was directed by Mr. Ron¬ ald Paine and performed by an all-girl cast, who made the play humor¬ ous and exciting. Between telephone calls, murders, accidents or added extras the play turned out not only successfully but fulfilling to every¬ one who participated. The Bible Club, a newer club in its second year was formed for the purpose of discussing pertinent questions of our contemporary soci¬ ety and relating them to the teachings of the inspired Word of God — the Bible. The goal of each of its members is to tell others about the peace and meaning only Jesus Christ can give to a person’s life. The Medics Club is not the most active organization in the school, but its members, each planning a career in the field of medi¬ cine, have truly expressed an interest in humanity. In achieving their goals, they have invited speakers to give lectures and have par¬ ticipated in local volunteer programs. This year the Chess Club broadened its scope to include the competition of players and teams from other schools in the area. Led by senior Keith Frantz and sophomore Tim Cover, the team surpised competitors and fin¬ ished the season with very rewarding results. MEDICS — Row 1: K. Longenecker, K. Zeller, H. Swingholm, S. When February 9th finally arrived, the auditorium was transformed into a scene of royalty, with Kelly Blouch and Andrew Kapp reigning over the 1974 Valentine Court. The pageant was filled with singing, piano playing, and a slide presentation, and the recessional was appropriately featured with the theme song, An Old Fashioned Love Song.” After the pageant, the group, Custer’s Last Band, provided entertainment for those attending the dance. It emphasizes personal growth and the individual’s desire to work toward change rather than toward a symbol of recognition, award, or a status. The Elco Chapter’s contrib¬ ution to the school has been mainly in the area of volunteering hostesses at the various banquets held each year. In addition they have had speakers come to the school and have had iund-raising projects to help meet the expenses of the club. 109 F.H.A. — Row 1: C. Layser, C. Brightbill, K. Krach, D. Boltz, F. Senior Directory MM 140 The school year — 1973-74 will be the one I’ll never forget. I’ll always remember it as a most exciting and fun-filled year of travel. Thanks to you all! I’ll go back home full of great memories of United States and espe¬ cially of my two best families. My special thanks goes to Student Govern¬ ment which made it possible for me to come here, get to know you all, and enjoy Elco activities. I hope you’ll be able to visit my homeland Finland some day and enjoy it as much as I did yours!!! Good Luck!!! Love, Eeva . You would know the secret of death. But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life? The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light. If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide into the body of life. For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one. In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond; And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring. Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity. Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour. Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king? Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling? For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance. — Kahlil Gibran In Memoriam Nancy Heintzelman May 7, 1956 to January 30, 1973 141 A D VER TISEMENTS 35 «.s ' tr o- n s va.cc ' P rorr m COCALICO CREEK ■ Wu 8 CAMPGROUND a Jslijrt in family Campinq -Swtuit td in p clu.res ue J UW rxoYv uancaster Counties f J . £-Denver , -fenraa. £ 15 - 267-2 01 + HIBSHMAN ' S ARCO Friendly Place to Meet and Eat BETTY HEMPERLY ' S CHAT-A-WHILE INN 1C - sasi ; State Inspection Heavy and Light Repairs West End of Newmanstown 589-4919 Tires, Batteries, and Accessories Daily Platters Sandwiches Music Every Friday Night No Minors Open 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM Mon.-Sat.; Closed Sun.
