We come for different reasons; no two of us learn exactly the same things. We work a lot because we have ideas that puzzle us and ambitions to fulfill. And we play a lot because we like a good time. Many of us will never come back to this campus but we will remember count- less things that happened to us here. All these memories will not be happy ones but that is part of growing. Too, there will be the things forgotten — though at the time they may have been very im- portant. But no matter how we remember Eastern, it has changed each of us. We came and stayed L awhile, departed, never quite the same. He received his B. S. degree from Nebraska University in 1938. After several years of coach- ing at Kansas and Nebraska Uni- versities, and a few years in the Navy, Presnell came to Eastern in 1947 as backfield coach. When Coach Presnell was named head coach here three years ago, he succeeded in taking his first team to an Ohio Valley Conference Championship and a trip to the Tangerine Bowl. Assisting Presnell with the back- field coaching is Don Daly, Eastern graduate of 1955. Don was a mem- ber of the championship team of 1954 and during his years in the service, made the All-Marine Team playing for Lejeune. Fred Darling, former Eastern Little All-American, joined the Eastern coaching staff in 1947. Darling re- ceived his M.S. degree from Eastern in 1947 and completed work toward a doctorate from the University of Indiana last year. Assisting Coach Darling with the line, is Jerry Boyd who received his B.S. degree at Eastern last year. Jerry, like Don, was a starter on the Maroon team that went to the Tangerine Bowl in 1954. fflmm mm. Right: Sebest totes the mail against Louisville and Callahan lends a hand to clear the way. Buddy came to Eastern in 1955 and since then has earned three letters as a guard for the Maroons. Buddy plans to coach and teach. EDWIN JORDON BASS (56) quarter- backed the team in a number of games this year. Eddie came to Eastern in 1956 as a transfer from Mississippi Central Junior College. He was one of the top passers for the Maroons this year complet- ing 11 of 28 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. An A student, Eddie plans to teach and coach. KEITH JACKSON RODGERS (82) another outstanding quarterback for the Maroons, graduated from Holmes High School in Covington. Coaches and team considered Jack one of the fast- est men on the squad. ROY HORTMAN (71) is a senior from Dayton, Ohio. A hardworker and powerful runner, Roy worked as halfback and full- back in his years at Eastern. He carried the ball for an average of 3.08 yards per at- tempt. CHARLES CHUCK BELL (63) from Pineville, played ball for the Maroons in 1953 and 1954 before entering the Army. This year Bell was the third leading ground- gainer for the team. He picked up 193 yards in 34 carries for an average of 5.73. JOHN ALLEN SEBEST (60) from Duquesne, Pennsylvania is a three-letter man in football. He was picked as a draft choice of the Cleveland Browns during his sophomore year and intends to try pro- football. John was the leading ground gainer, punter and scorer for the Maroons this season. He gained 460 yards in 50 tries for an average of 4.80 and scored 51 points on six touchdowns and 15 extra points. Sebest has the honor of being an unanimous choice for the All-Ohio Valley Conference first team and was named captain of the team RALPH CONSIGLIO (87) also hails from Duquesne, Pennsylvania. He did a fine job of filling the guard position this year after being harassed by a knee injury suffered during his sophomore year. Con- sigio was an excellent blocker and one of the top defensive men on the squad. PAUL RICHARD THOMAS (64) from Boston, Ohio, has earned four letters in football at Eastern. A fine defensive end and a good pass receiver, Paul caught five passes for 61 yards. THERON SONNY WHITE (45) play- ed end on the undefeated 1954 team, served in the Armed Forces, and returned to his halfback position this year. Sonny caught four passes for 60 yards and picked up 6C yards in 23 carries. THOMAS DEAN SCHULTE (18) from Newport, has earned four letters in foot- ball. He has been All-Conference end two years and received honorable mention on the Little-All-American team. Tom has been drafted into the pro ranks by the Detroit Lions and plans to play pro ball. The leading pass receiver for the Maroons, Tom caught nine passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns. Wis ■Above: Hortman is taken down by opposition. What he could not foresee and what most observers were not aware of, were the unfortunate chain of events — the recurrent illnesses and repeated injuries — which wrecked the chances of this potentially great team to prove itself. Many teams cancelled games throughout the fall and winter because of the nationwide epidemic of Asian flu, and certainly this team would have been justified in doing so, but the Maroons, held together by aspirin and tape and desire and Dr. John Wimberly, made the effort and took their lumps. Any doubt that this was not the ball team it was predicted to be was dispelled during the latter part of the season when the Maroons began to mend and proceeded to win five of their last seven ball games. Disappointed fans of February 4 forgot their disappointments on February 5 after they witnessed a decisive trouncing of the Louisville Cardinals by a courageous Eastern team that even then had three of their in- tended-regulars out of the lineup. The win over Louisville was accom- plished with the great performance of Kiser, who, for the first time during the season, was in physical playing condition, and the efforts of Dale Moore, Larry Wood, and Roy Woolum, to single out a few. The 91-72 victory over Morehead gave further proof to McBrayer ' s statement that any time this team was physically able to play it played nothing but good basket- ball. Jim Kiser again demonstrated what a difference the record might have been had Lady Luck not frowned on him and inflicted him with illness throughout the year. Kiser completely outplayed one of college basketball ' s better players, Steve Hamilton, by contributing 27 points and 13 rebounds to the cause. Wood and Moore again turned in 20-point performances while Vencill, Bowles, Paulus and Kotula gave brilliant support. In the last home game of the season, the Maroons turned back a strong Loyola University of New Orleans, a team that had already knocked off enough powers to be invited to the NCAA Tournament. Again it was Kiser with 28 points and 13 re- bounds who led the way, and again it was Moore and Wood in the chief supporting roles. In spite of the obstacles and setbacks that hounded them throughout the season, the Maroons remained undaunted and made comeback after comeback, undis- mayed. One of the most highly re- garded and respected coaches in college basketball circles today is Paul McBrayer, a native of Anderson County and a 1930 All-America guard at the Uni- versity of Kentucky. Faced with a general shortage of top-flight material, he gets as much out of his players as any other man in the business. It is a well-known fact that the veteran coach is a master of the game, a basketball fundamentalist with a genius for developing his players into fundamentally sound teams. One of the finest compliments paid to him was that from a bitter opponent who said, Year in and year out, Mac ' s teams ore the best disciplined of any that we meet — they reflect character as well as skill. Virgil Butler All-Conference Dale Moore, 6-5 forward from Inez, and Larry Wood, 6-3 guard from Brooks- ville, were named to the AII-OVC team by vote of the conference coaches. Wood and Moore led their teammates in scoring for the second straight year, with averages of 16.6 and 15.5 respectively. Moore was the team ' s leading rebounder and also copped the single-game scoring record for the season with 29 points against North Caro- lina State. Captain Jim Kiser, 6-3 forward from Carter, was out of the lineup much of the season because of illness, but later gave a memorable account of himself, particularly in the Morehead game when he led the Maroons to victory Virgil Butler, 6-7 center from Butler, was the Maroon ' s regular pivotman for the first seven games of the season until a physical disorder kept this fine competitor from further participation. 1957-58 Varsity Basketball Team: (1st row) J. Baechtold, who lettered four years, was All-conference three years, and All- American two years, was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets of the National Basketball Association after graduation in 1952. He was voted Rookie of the Year at the end of the season and when Baltimore discontinued its franchise in the NBA, Baechtold was purchased by the New York Knickerbockers where he had four successful seasons before he decided to go into coaching.
