CASERN JkSTA vysfTumKy THE tt LESTON£ ' V: K ii A Js © s ' ft i -c. V-, - V« FOREWORD We ' re going to forget many of the things that made our col- lege days worth while; we ' ll lose some of the eagerness and enthu- siasm we now have and even a few of our cherished memories will be lost in the future years. It is the job of the MILESTONE to keep those memories liv- ing. Its purpose is to record the year ' s activities in such a way that the turn of each page will lead us back over the old paths, cause to relive old experiences, renew old friendships, and in some small way, recapture the moments that are gone. Let Eastern, through the coming years as in the past, pro- HHI gress and expand beyond recog- nition. All of us will glory in it. And now with the turn of these pages we can catch a glimpse of the Eastern we knew. To all those who contributed, directly or indirectly, to the com- pletion of this yearbook — I am sincerely grateful. To my staff, Thanks, B. R. M. ' ' When the Great Recorder comes To score against your name, It isn ' t if you won or lost, But hoio you played the game. Tom Samuels We, the senior class of 1954, dedicate this our annual to Mr. Tom Samuels, former football coach and instructor at Eastern. As our class sponsor and as a friend, he was helpful and ambitious for us at all times. We wish him con- tinued success and happiness in his new work. They edged John Carroll 20-19 in the opening game at Cleveland on September 19 then returned home to dispose of conference foe Middle Tennessee 15-6, in the home opener on September 26. One week later the Maroons traveled to Murray and brought back a 19-14 vic- tory, their first over the Thoroughbreds in four years. Eastern ' s rushing attack against Tennessee Tech was stopped and resulted in first defeat of the season by a 7-0 count. Youngstown College took a one point 20-19 decision on October 16 after the Maroons failed on two of three extra point attempts, but this proved to be the final loss of the season as the Eastern lads went on to chaJk up five consecutive victories. They had little trouble in downing Morehead 25-7 before a Dad ' s Day crowd in Hanger Stadium to keep possession of the coveted Hawg Rifle , a relic for which these two teams battle annually. They had another easy time writing victory No. 5 in the books on October 31, romping over Evansville 59-9 before a homecoming crowd at Evansville. Eastern ' s own homecoming crowd was delighted a week later, on November 7, 90 when the Maroons stopped their arch rivals, the Western Hilltop- pers, by a 13-7 score, to avenge the defeat suffered at Bowling Green last year. The Maroons were also seeking revenge when they moved into Louisville the following week and came out on top against the Louis- ville Cardinals 20-13. Eastern ' s impressive 30-26 win over Stetson University at Deland. Florida, on November 28 com- pleted the best season for the Maroon gridders in years. Glenn Presnell attended the University of Ne- braska where he was an Ail-American halfback in 1927. He played professional football from 1928 to 1936 before returning to Nebraska as backfield coach from 1938 through 1941. The following year he was named head coach at that university. In 1943, ' 44, and ' 45. Press served as an officer in the Navy. He came to Eastern in the fall of 1947 and since that time has made many friends in the Blue Grass. Fred Darling played three years of football at Eastern where he was chosen as honorable men- tion on the Little All-American team. He was also selected as first string tackle on the Kentucky Inter- collegiate Athletic Conference squad for three years. Fred has been line coach at Eastern since 1947. 1953 EASTERN KENTUCKY MAROONS ■■ ■ Bottom row, left to right: Gerald Boyd. George Griffin. Clarence Collins, Horace Harper. During this period, the Maroons have consist- ently ranked among the top 50 teams of the nation, and sports writers and rival coaches credit their remarkable success to the man who directs them. A master strategist, strict disciplinarian, a basketball fundamentalist with seemingly unlimited knowledge of the game, is Maroon Coach Paul McBrayer. A native of Lawrenceburg, Anderson County, Kentucky, Coach McBrayer attended the University of Kentucky where he starred in basketball and baseball, and was named on the All-American basketball team in 1930. After graduation he coached at Morton Junior High in Lexington and at Kavanaugh High in Lawrenceburg before returning to Kentucky as assistant coach. He remained at the University for nine years, until called into the serv- ice in 1943, and after serving two and a half years, came to Eastern. His building program at Eastern is evidenced by the record his teams have established since he took over as basketball coach in November, 1946. That fall, he took a group of un- heralded freshmen and brought them through the season with 21 wins and only 4 losses against a schedule of big name schools. It took only two more years for his Maroons to enter the select group classified by the N.C.A.A. as major college basketball teams and they have competed with remarkable success on a major scale, winning 125 games and losing only 65 in the eight-year period. Many observers are amazed at this record because it is a well-known fact that Mc- Brayer never has any of the game ' s greats on his squad. However, it is also a well - known fact that the veteran coach is a master of the game, a bas- ketball fundamen- talist with a genius for developing his players into funda- mentally sound teams. As one sports writer put it, Plis intimate under- standing of basket- ball is credited by rival coaches as the basic reason behind the success of East- ern which has never been blessed with a 1 1 - around, great material since McBrayer took over in 1946. It is no accident when one of his teams stages a so- called upset over a favorite. As one of his assistants stated on such an occasion, It didn ' t just happen — it was planned that way. TOM HOLBROOK 99 lOTUCKY KENTUCKY KENTUCKY V KENTUCKY lit §■ CHTUCKY JX ¥ KtMTUTO aitii The Eastern cagers were faced with a tremendous rebuilding job this year after the loss of all five regulars and the two front line reserves from last year ' s team that won the Ohio Valley Conference championship and went on to the N.C.A.A. Tourna- ment. With only two returning Iettermen. seniors Tom Holbrook and Bob Mulcahy, their hopes were further dimmed when Mulcahy, who was averaging 20 points a game, suffered a severe attack of influenza after the fifth game of the season and before fully recovering had a second attack which robbed the Maroons of a great scoring threat. It was not until the last game of the season, on March 3. that Mulcahy was able to return to form. Tom Holbrook, however, throughout the season, thrilled the fans with his brilliant shooting performances and his uncanny accuracy on his one-hand jump shot. Against Tennessee Tech on December 8 he hit 12 out of 16 shots; against Western in the K.I.T., 11 out of 22; against Xavier in the K.I.T., 12 out of 22; against Western at Bowling Green, 10 out of 21; against Middle Tennessee at Murfreesboro, 15 out of 23; and for the entire year hit at a near 50% clip, averaging 18 points a game. Holbrook and a group of young, inexperienced freshmen and sophomores carried the load for the Maroons and were able to register only 7 wins against 16 losses, but endeared themselves to the hearts of the fans by maintaining a terrific spirit and 100% effort throughout the season in the face of great odds. Promises for the future, however, were uncovered in the persons of sophomores Jack Adams and Ronnie Pellegrinon, and a couple of freshmen, Jimmy Mitchell and J. D. Brock, were in I he starting lineup before the end of the year. Roy Allison, a senior, broke into the start- ing lineup before the season ended, but will be lost through graduation along with Holbrook and Mulcahy. 100 0$h ■9 The caliber of competition met by the Maroons during the 1953-54 season was probably the toughest ever encountered by an Eastern squad. Three of their opponents competed in the National Invitation Tournament and two in the N.C.A.A. Tournament, and practically every team on the schedule was stronger than ever before, but the Eastern lads turned in some terrific performances in their first losing campaign. The Maroons played before 95,000 fans in their 23 games and, as always, sports writers and rival coaches heaped rounds of praise on Coach Paul McBrayer for another magnificent coaching job. Already recognized as a master tactician of the game with the ability to accomplish more with less material than any other coach today, he proved it again this season. This was clearly evidenced on February 6 when his young charges handed the greatest Western team of all time its first loss of the season, 63-54. Only two other teams in the country. N.I.T. Champion Holy Cross, and Niagara, were able to perform the feat. Eastern earlier held the Hilltoppers to a 3-point 78-81 victory in the Kentucky Invitational Tournament at Louisville. The Maroons ' performance against the Quanticc Marines, an aggregation of All-Americans headed by Paul Arizin and Richie Regan, was another highlight of the season. The Marines won, 96-89. in a down-to-the-wire finish. Final statistics released by the N.C.A.A. show the Maroons in 12th place in the nation among major colleges in field goal percentage shooting with a mark of 40.2%. and 24th place in offense with an average of 76.7 points per game. Eastern scored a total of 660 field goals as compared to the opponents ' 591. They got only 720 chances at the free throw line, however, compared to 996 for the opposition. Eastern con- verted 444 times, the opponents 672. They shaded the opponents in rebounds, aver- aging 44 a game against 40. The Maroons advanced to the finals of the O.V.C. Tournament in Louisville after soundly trouncing Middle Tennessee 95-69, and brought home their fourth runners- up trophy in the six year history of the tournament to add to the two championship trophies already in the case. 101 BOB MULCAHY Co-Captain 1953 JACK ADAMS GEORGE FRANCIS JIM FLOYD PAUL COLLINS RONNIE PELLEGRINON NICK TEPAVICH MAROONS TOM HOLBROOK Co-Captain ROY ALLISON J.
