THE HANGING OF THE GREENS WEAVER HEALTH BUILDING Athletics DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Since coming to Eastern twenty years ago, Charles Turkey Hughes has been one of the main reasons why Eastern has been established as a powerhouse in all Athletic circles. In addition to being a four letter man at the University of Kentucky — Turkey as he is known to his many friends — spent quite a few years play- ing professional baseball which could be one reason why Eastern produces a winning team on the diamond. Turkey was elected the first president of the newly formed Ohio Valley Conference of which Eastern is a member. ,% ' -7 v.vr ;v; ' • FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF ■■' Tom Samuels who spent a few years at Eastern as assistant coach was appointed head coach in 1947 and for the past two seasons his teams have established one of the best records in Eastern ' s gridiron history. Coach Samuels is a former All American from the University of Michigan. Glenn Presnell who has been backfield coach for the past two seasons has been a perfect reason why the Eastern backfield was feared but respected by all competition. Coach Presnell is also a former All American from the University of Nebraska. Fred Darling, line coach, is a former Maroon, all K.I, AC. and Little All American. In the first foot- ball encounter of the 1948 season the Maroons came out on the short end of the score. By playing a much larger and faster team backed with depths of reserves the Maroons were no match for the Musketeers from Cincinnati. Salty Owens received a broken leg which kept him out of action the remaining season. Eastern, 25 — Eastern Illinois, 14 . . . After the sad opening game defeat at the hands of Xavier, the Maroons played their first home game against Eastern Illinois and came out victorious, 25 to 1 4 . . . While trailing 1 4 to 7 at intermission a rejuvenated Maroon squad tied the score in the third quarter and then forged ahead in the closing period . . . Fresh- man halfback Chuck Hertzer tossed three touchdown passes . . . End Bob Tankosh snagged the first and halfback Harry Sweesy caught the second two in pay dirt ... Ed Zoretic added the finishing touch by galloping 37 yards to the golden gates. Eastern, 20 — Marshall, 7 . . . Eastern grid- sters really got into the swing of the 1948 campaign by upsetting Marshall . . . The dopesters took a back seat on this one too, after predicting a win for the Thundering Herd . . . Playing before 10,000 fans in Huntington, W. Va., the Maroons scored in the second canto on a pass from Hertzer to Jack Bahlman . . . Bill Emmett scored next and also kicked his second placement of the game ... In the final quarter, Ed Zoretic galloped 79 yards for the final score. Eastern, 6 — Murray, . . . Playing before one of the largest Homecoming crowds in Eastern history, the Mighty Maroons ended a day of festivities by stop- ping the undefeated Thoroughbreds of Murray by 6 to . . . This was Murray ' s lone defeat of the season ... It was early in the third quarter when Harry Sweesy romped down the sidelines 44 yards for the only touchdown of the game. Moore also converted . . . Chuck Hertzer bucked the line from the one yard stripe for the finale. Eastern, 7 — Morehead, ... By stopping the Morehead Eagles 7 to the Maroons won their sixth straight contest and by winning kept possession of the famous Hawg Rifle symbol of the victorious eleven . . . This win also kept the Maroons in top position of the O.V.C. ... In the first minutes of the second half, quarterback Bill Emmett ran 57 yards to score the only TD . . . Bud Moore kicked the extra point . . . Morehead ' s only serious threat came in the third quarter after they had fought to the Eastern one yard line and there stopped by a desperate Maroon line. Eastern, — Evansville, 7 . . . Playing in rain and on a mud packed field the Eastern Maroons lost their first home game of the season to the Purple Aces of Evansville by a score of 7 to . . . The only score of the game was set ud by a penalty against the Mar- oons which moved the ball to the Eastern one. One play later Evansville scored and the ball game was theirs . . . Eastern ' s fast clicking backfield just couldn ' t maneuver on the wet field . . . This game was honored by most of the players ' dads sitting on the bench with the players. BASKETBALL COACHING STAFT Paul McBrayer Since coming to Eastern two years ago head basketball coach Paul McBrayer has es- tablished the best basketball record in the his- tory of the Eastern Maroons. M cBrayer, known as the Big Irishman is a former All American from the Univer- sity of Kentucky. At one time during the past season coach McBrayer had his Eastern Maroons ranked as one of the ten top teams of the nation. Introducing a new member of the basket- ball coaching staff, Lee Gellenbeck who is the assistant to Head Coach McBrayer. Lee has proven to be an asset to Coach McBrayer in scouting opponents. He has coached the Fresh- men team to a successful season. His military service dates from the First World War which he entered as an enlisted man and gained his commission in France. His service has been in the Field Artillery until World War II when he became one of the first army officers to engage in amphibious operations and training. As such he was at- tached to the Navy and Marine Corps for almost the en- tire duration of the War. He is a graduate of the Field Artillery School and the Armed Forces Staff College.
