Deniston ...Faculty Advisor VOLUME XIV PUBLISHED ANNUALLY by the SENIOR CLASS of Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College at RICHMOND, KENTUCKY — J Foreword And now another year has passed, and we, as another Senior class, offer the Milestone as our last endeavor as students at Eastern. Herein are recorded and pictured the social and academic events of the past year. We refrain from being sentimental in our book for, although we are saying goodbye to those persons and surroundings which have grown dear to us through constant association for four years, we are anxious to step out into the world and take our place there, and prove our right to our heritage. To us, Life is good and great. Of course, we well realize that there are many dis- appointments ahead for us. We realize that we shall find tears where we expected to find smiles, but we are confident that our faith in ourselves and our ideals, together with our philosophy that honesty and hard work will accomplish any- thing, will see us safely through all situations. So we, the Senior class, give to you the Milestone of 1935 with the hope that it will serve to bind us closer, in some measure at least, to our Alma Mater. Hill President Fay White Treasurer Ernest Young Vice-President SENIOR CLASS AND NOW, that time has come when another class is up for graduation. For four years we have lived in that certain atmosphere that is Eastern, and now we are ready to take our various places in the world. It is the usual custom for the class historian to put a halo around the past and at the same time see the future in a golden mist. That, however, is not our philosophy. We have enjoyed our stay at Eastern. The most of us realised that we were being offered an opportunity to better ourselves, and we were glad to take advantage of that opportunity. Some of our fellows failed to grasp the full import of the situation and they have paid the price. It has been quite interesting to note the development of the abilities of the various members of our class. As we stand upon the threshold of our work in the world we are certain that some members of our group are going to go far. These persons have shown their ability to shoulder responsibility and assume leader ' ship. They loom head and shoulders above the rest in the class room, on the athletic field, and in the extra-class activities. There is every indication that they will make good in life, and because of their success we will be proud of the privilege we have had of associating with them. We refrain from listing and enlarging on the various affairs and events which are common to every class. We only wish to say that we believe that we have learned more than that which is included in the formal curricula of the college. We have learned the value of cooperation; we have learned the value of honest work, and we have learned the value of a constant association with cultural factors. For these things we are indeed thankful. We are ready for a real task now — that of fighting for our place in the sun. If we fail, we trust that future classes will profit by our errors. In closing, we, the departing Seniors, wish to leave this thought : We are proud of Eastern. May Eastern be proud of us. Thirty-eight Josephine Kincaid Paris, Kentucky B. Barxhill Faculty Advisor Frances Hanna Secretarx JUNIOR CLASS WE CAME to Eastern 400 strong in September. 1932. However, we found we were not so strong as we thought when the upper elassmen began their course m How To Bring Up A Freshman In The Way He Should Go. It was quite a rough road we traveled, but we were dumb enough to believe Doctor Donovan when he stood before us m chapel and said we were the finest Freshman class Eastern had ever had. We wisely chose as our leader Walter Mavity, who steered us through with flying colors. During that year Miss Eastern was chosen from our class. In 1933 we found ourselves once more at Eastern. Not so many, but more eager and ready to carry on, this time under the inspirational leadership of Don Michelson and his efficient helpers. We were proud of the orators in our class. Many of our members became leaders in the various organisations on the campus. That year our class was honored again with a titled member, Miss Popularity. The close of our Sophomore year was a sad one because we were aware of the number of our members who received certificates. This year our hearts go out to those who were with us through our first two years. We wish they could have enjoyed, with the few of us who are left, the pleasure of being a Junior. Now, Thomas Farris is carrying our lantern and the road ahead looks bright. We lift our heads a little higher when the names of our athletes are men tioned. Tradition once again presents itself and the Annual Junior Prom becomes the spotlight of the year ' s social activities. With a unity of spirit, we are gradually passing the third milestone of our college career. Sixty-eight JUNIORS Thomas Jacob Farris Ruby Golden Hamm Mrs. Robert Rankin Richmond, Ky. Bryantsville, Ky. Manned by the members of the two year class she completes another portion of a four-year voyage and deposits her passengers safely on deck in one of the four distinct refueling and reminiscence stops made at each leg of the journey. With an assiduous captain at the wheel, we, passengers and crew, have had nothing to fear. Dr. Herndon, our captain, advisor, and friend; an experienced sailor on the sea of learning and the trustworthy leader of our enterprise, has proven his worth to us. With him as our chief, aided by our dependable battery of class officers, we have completed a most successful year. We first became acquainted with Eastern in the fall of 193 3 when we embarked upon the tempestuous first leg of our journey, and became aware of our standing when the waves, created by the powerful ships of the other classes, rocked our frail craft almost to the point of disaster. But, we came through, and now, from a more powerful craft, jovially witness the spectacle of the freshman riding the waves. The achievements of our class and its members are self explanatory. Freshmen football stars of last year, such as Hedges, Pennington, Yates, Mavity, and Stephenson, have proven their worth as varsity material. The greatest Sophomore contribution to the basketball court is found in Woodrow Hinkle. Kenneth Bental, and Marvin Tincher, representatives of the two-year organization, displayed splendid speech quali- ties in the educational oratorical contest last fall. One of the attendants to Miss Eastern was Miss Nancy Covington, an attractive feminine member of our group. Morris Creech, also a Sophomore, was appointed managing editor of the Progress. In addition to furnishing leading members for the campus musical organizations, Sophomores have become affiliated with and accepted places of leadership in practically ever) ' campus organization. We are proud of our record made in the past and are determined to make one in the future of which we will be equally as proud. Seventy-eight SOPHOMORES Rose Lee Morgan Hoskinston, Ky. We, the Class of 1938, are not only proud of our size, hut of our diversified talent as well. Already members of our class have established themselves as leaders in scholastic and extra-curricular activities. From our ranks have been chosen the winner of the Peace Conference Oratorical Contest, the Drum Major, a cheer leader, and the president of the Northern Kentucky Club. Our class members are also active participants in sports, debating, and journalism. Having earnestly started on our educational career and having passed the trails common to all freshmen, we are ready to hitch our wagon to a star and conquer worlds untold. It is our hope that we may be as successful as the classes which have preceded us. We sincerely feel that at the end of this, our first college year, we have a broader philosophy and a consequent saner view of life. Our association with the faculty and with the upper classmen has given us a new and better set of values and we are thank- ful to them. Some of our fellows have left our fold and there are indications that some will not be with us next year. For them we are sorry, and we extend the hand of sympathy. Already we cherish Eastern s ideals, and we have ambitions of making our college proud of us. We desire to uphold the traditions set by our predecessors and to propo- gate the tenet that Eastern is the friendly college. Ninety • M 1 L T O N FRESHMEN Frank Mitchell Pans, Ky. BOOK ATHLETICS L ft Yffft EARLE COMBS THE MILESTONE is proud to dedicate this page to Earle Combs, sportsman and gentleman. Eastern ' s contribution to big league baseball, Mr. Combs, or Earle, as he is better known to his followers in baseball, came to Eastern in 1920, and, although he did not play collegiate ball his first year, he evi- denced such a knowledge and interest in the game that the following year he became a regular on the varsity, playing the position of short-stop. Earle made good from the very first, starring not only as an infield player but also as a batter. This is evidenced by the fact that his batting average for the first year of varsity ball was .593. During the summer oi 1920-21, he played semi-professional ball with the Harlan and High Splint teams. Then, in the spring of 1922, Combs left Eastern to play with the Louisville Colonels in the American Association. Earle rode the bench until May. At this time, due to an accident suffered by Acosta, the regular outfielder, Combs was given his first chance in the professional game. He kept his position from then on and it marks the beginning of a continuous record in the professional game. In the winter of 1923, he was sold to the New York Yankees for the reputed sum of $50,000. Three times Earle has suffered major acci- dents in connection with his playing; in 1924, he broke his leg while playing in Cleve- land; in 1928, while playing in Detroit he broke an arm; and in 1934, he fractured his skull and broke his left shoulder when he ran into a wall while playing in St. Louis. With the exception of these times Earle has played continuously for his club and his play- ing has always been outstanding. 1927 was, perhaps, his best all-round year and that year he batted .3 54 and led the league in triples and base hits. He also enjoyed a good year in 1934 when his fielding record was .994, with only one error. He has played in four World Series, those of 1926, 1927, 1928, and 1932. In spite of the severe setback which he suffered during the last season, he is with the Yankees again this year and there is every indication that he will give the fans another year of consistent playing. Eastern is proud of Earle and the Milestone does take a great pleasure in dedicating this page to him. One Hundred Ten WITHIN recent times, Eastern has con- mi HENRY RED- PHILLIPS lbuted two more young men to the ranks of organised professional baseball. These men are Clyde Hatter and Henry Red Phillips, and the Milestone takes a particular pleasure in dedicating this page to these two young athletes. Hatter was born at Poplar Grove, in Casey County, and had some experience in baseball before reporting to Eastern. He was partic ularly shining in varsity baseball here at the college and many of the alumni will remem- ber his consistent playing. After leaving Eastern, he went to the Louisville Colonels in the American Association and he has played for the past lour years with that club. It is easy to understand that Hatter is referred to as an outstanding professional player when it is realized that he has turned in several no- hit, no-run games. The past year Clyde was sold to the Detroit Tigers and it is report- ed that they think so much of this young pitcher ' s ability that they do not intend to farm him out. Henry Phillips, or as he is better known to his friends at Eastern, Red, is also a pitcher of no mean ability. He came to Eastern from Junction City, Boyle County. He also was a consistently outstanding varsity player here at Eastern. He attracted the attention of the big league scouts, and finally was signed by the Cincinnati Reds. Last year Red was assigned to the Pied- mont League. He turned in a very satis- factory record as a pitcher in this league and this year he has been assigned to the Ft. Worth Club of the Texas League. Inasmuch as the Texas League plays much faster ball than the Piedmont, Red may be considered as having been definitely advanced along the road of professional baseball. These two men are bound to go far in the great American game. We are confident in them. We are backing them to the limit, for we know by their past and present perform- ances and by our actual contact with them that they cannot fail. Eastern wishes her base- gB ball Trinity, Combs, Hatter, and Phillips, the g| greatest of success. CLYDE HATTER N One Hundred Eleven ' M I L E S T O N E COACHES Charles Turkey Hughes, A. B., M. A. VARSITY FOOTBALL WITH the heaviest and one of the best balanced squads of football players ever to assemble on Eastern ' s campus reporting for duty early in September, the football prospects for the Maroons looked indeed bright. Lady Luck, how- ever, had something to say about the outcome of the season and before the season was over that Lady Luck, which sometimes can be so sweet and mature, turned into a witch. In fact she bewitched the Maroons to the tune of one victory and six defeats. Starting off the year with one of the outstanding football elevens of the State of Ohio, the Miami University Redskins, the Maroons showed promise of becoming a strong contender for S. I. A. A. honors when they held the strong Miami team to a 19-0 score. Although losing the tilt, the Maroons showed enough football to stamp them as a real football eleven and only through misplays of the inexperienced players did the score mount as high as 19 points. Transylvania was the next op- ponent for the Maroons and everyone, including the Maroons themselves thought that the game was surely one for the Eastern win column but the breaks of the game went decidedly against the Maroon clad boys and they again went down to a surprise defeat. To add to this, on the next week-end the Maroons met and were defeated by a small Union team in a game that Lady Luck really exerted herself in hindering the Eastern men. Three times during the fray the Maroons were inside of the Bull- dog ten-yard line and thrice they were unable to put the ball over the necessary line and (inly an SO-yard return of an intercepted pass by an Eastern back enabled the score to be 13-7. Coach Hughes then stepped m and gave the team a severe shake-up in an effort to find a winning combination but to no avail, for after scoring 9 points in as many minutes, the Maroons lost their ne:a game to the Georgetown Tigers largely through a series of poor passing plays and were unable to score on the Bengals again due to the strong defense put up by the Georgetonians. Then came the only bright spot m the ' season, for with the student body and faculty strongly crying for a victory in the Homecoming Game against Morehead, the Maroons rose to the occasion with a fine 7-0 victory. The Eastern eleven clearly outplayed the Morehead during the entire tilt but were unable to score until the crucial moment which happened to be iust about sixty seconds before the final whistle. The other two remaining games on the schedule were only nightmares to the followers of the Maroons for Western trimmed the Eastern aggregation by their massiveness and great power and Louisville won their game from an uninspired and worn team of Easterners. Highlights of the season were: Greenwell ' s all-around playing throughout the en- tire schedule, Joe Hedges ' s ball-carrying in the Morehead and Georgetown games. Albert Cox ' s long runs in the Union and Louisville tilts, Ernie Young ' s fine defensive play during the year, Clifford Fox ' s punting, and Barney Wilson ' s fine end-play in the Morehead and Transy games. Nine Seniors are lost to the team this year and will be sorely missed by the team as well as the student body. They are : Ernest Young, Louis Corum, Clarence Sutter. Lloyd Dykes, Clifford Schulte, James Allen, Edward Hill, Albert Cox, and Paul Tierney. M 1 L E S T O N One Hundred Thirteen T. C. Coach Portwood was fortunate in having a set of hard-driving, speedy backs as well as fast, sturdy linemen. Although the Little Maroons played hut three games this year, they gave a good account of themselves in each of the tilts. Playing the Transylvania Tenderfeet as their first opponent, the yearlings drubbed the Lexington lads to the tune of 20-0. The game was played on a muddy field and if it had not been for that fact the score would have been much larger. This game spoiled the Baby Maroons, for they under- estimated a strong Morehead eleven and were defeated 24-0. The Freshman in the final game bucked the strong Centre outfit. After an exciting contest which was filled with every possible brand of good football. Centre carried off the victory, 13-12 Harold (Mudder) Everhng was perhaps the outstanding ball carrier of the season and his long runs were a feature of every game. In the passing and punting depart- ments, Norbert Rechtin was outstanding, while Elwood Douglas and James Caldwell shared the baekfield honors. Both of these men will lend valuable support to the varsity next year. Harold Throckmorton, Ray Tucker, Jack Quaing, and Frank Mitchell are also worthy of mention for their consis tent work in the baekfield. On the line, Norman Lee, Joe Molesburger, Jack (Sailor) Cummins, Louis Von W.dden, Charles Farris, Joe Shearer, and R. D. Lacey should be mentioned as play- ing the best brand of ball. In all, this line was perhaps the heaviest and most ver- satile that any freshman team at Eastern has ever had. In addition to the men men- tioned above, such players as Herman Douglas, Frank Vandermark, J. C. Wash and Joe Moore should be given credit for the style of ball which they played during the season. This year ' s freshman team promises to furnish the varsity of next year with some of the best material that Eastern has ever had, and there is every indication that, with the coming of such experienced material as was represented the past season, Eastern is headed for a series of rather successful football seasons. SEASON ' S RESULTS 21 Transylvania Morehead 12 Centre . .24 .13 M I L E S T O N One Hundred Seventeen VARSITY BASKETBALL L N T HIS year ' s varsity Maroons was captained by Little Hale, veteran guard from Carr Creek. Starting off the season with five straight conference victories, the Maroons met some rough sledding and were able to take only two games out of the remaining nine tilts. Kentucky Wesleyn, Centre, Georgetown, Tennessee Wesleyn; and Morehead fell before the sharp shooting of the Maroons during the season while the Hughesmen were the victims of Centre, Transylvania, Morehead, Western, Murray and Berea. This year ' s varsity team was composed of five sophomores, two juniors, and four senior men. Hinkle, Brown, DeMoisey, Fulkerson, and Kirkland were the sophomores; Scearce and Settle, the juniors; and Capt. Hale, Young, Ashmore, and Allen were the four-year men; and while the last four named players will be sorely missed next season, Eastern will have one of the best foundations for a truly great team next year that it has ever had. J. B. Scearce, diminutive forward of the Maroons, was another shining light on the team. His speed and accurate goal tossing often drew the plaudits of the ' Maroon fans. Ashmore and Young, two senior guards, played fine ball all season for the Hughes-coached men and deserve much credit for the fine showing the Maroons made on several occasions. Allen and DeMoisey, the Walton, Ken- tucky twin forwards, gave great demonstrations of ball-handling in every game they participated in and along with Heman Fulkerson, Ray Settle, and Kelly Kirkland. showed fine defensive ability. It was due to their fine guarding that kept the op- ponents at bay in several contests. In a practice game before the regular season began, the Maroons took on the Alumni quintet, and the old grads turned the trick on the present Maroon team, largely through the efforts of T. C. McDaniel, last year ' s pivotman. The season ' s results follow: Eastern 26 Alumni 36 Eastern 26 Ky. Wesleyn 24 Eastern 30 Centre 25 Eastern 32 Ky. The team was composed entirely of experienced high school players from the several sections of the state and was whipped into shape by Coach Portwood. The Baby Maroons had everything: height, scoring ability, speed, good passing, and plenty of high class reserve material. There was only one fly in the ointment to spoil a perfect record for a perfect team, and- that was a loss to the Georgetown Cubs. The Baby Maroons later defeated teams by double the scores that defeated the Georgetown team and they thus, enabled themselves to be called the best freshman basketball team in the State. The Eastern quintet met and defeated such college teams as: Centre, Kentucky Wesleyn, Morehead, Berea, and Transylvania, with Booneville and Finchville high school teams also being defeated by the Little Maroons. The scores of the games played showed an advantage of from 5 to 30 points difference and clearly made Eastern an outstanding team. The varsity will receive some of the best material it has ever received next year when this year ' s freshman five appear as varsity men. Outstanding among the fresh- man players was Roy King, former Annville Institute star, who gave some of the most beautiful exhibitions of goal shooting that has ever been seen in the Weaver Gym. King also ran away with the high scoring honors of the team and was a fine defensive guard. Otwell Rankin, Covington, was another star of the Little Maroons. His free wheeling shots netted the Maroons many a goal and his defensive game at guard was all that could be asked for from any guard. Norman Lee, former Mays- ville athlete, was the floor man of the team and although he did not tally a great num- ber of points, he was an important cog in the Portwood machine because of his pass work and floor work. Lee played forward on the team and was alternated with Cornett. Herman Douglas, Bcllevue, became one of the high scoring members of the team late in the season and gained a starting position on the Baby Maroon Five at forward. Douglas was a fine floor shot and a good passer and ball-handler. Perhaps the most improved player on the whole team was Music, the elongated Maroon Center. He was an inexperienced, gangling youth when he first reported to Coach Portwood, but by the end of the season Music was playing basketball with the best of them and doing a grand job at center. His specialty shot was a rebound that he made consistently after an Eastern shot had gone amiss. Music ' s 6-ft. fl- inch frame also came in handy in controlling the tip-off for the Baby Maroons. Other fine players on the team were Cornett, with his amazing one-hand push shot that was a sure shot on any occasion: Lester King, with his speed and ability to make crip shots under any circumstances; Ncikirk, with his all-around ability; Tyree, with his goal shooting, and Caldwell, with his fine defensive work. It extends a hand ot friendship, not only to its members, but to all those who are interested in better homes for the future. Its aim is to make young women realize how closely associated health is to wholesome recreation. Our manners, our dress, and even our thoughts are in- fluenced by the comradeship which we gain through our association with each other. During the Christmas season the club collected food and clothing which were given to the needy families in the home communities of the various club members.
