Some days are happy — others sad. But we as Seniors of Eastern are fast approaching a day which will bring both joy and sadness. The joy comes from thinking that we as individuals have reached the end of the fourth milestone in our college career, and are now ready to join a larger army and march along facing life and its many problems. But the thought of leaving our Eastern, the place we have learned to love dur- ing our four years within her doors, brings sadness to our hearts. The Class of ' 33, for the most part, has remained intact during the four years spent at Eastern. The members have made themselves known by keep- ing the spirit of cooperation and working to hold higher the ideals that Eastern has set before them. It would be folly to enumerate the things that the Class has done to prove its worth in carrying out these standards, but it can be i - ; said of the Class of ' 33 that it has fought the army of problems that were ; ' confronted in the fourth mile — victory is its reward. Various members of the Class of ' 33 have shown the ability of this class to carry on, by assuming leadership in many campus activities. Such organiza- tions as the Y. M. C. A., Sigma Tau Pi, Little Theatre Club, Madrigal Club, Canterbury Club, Social Science Club, Sigma Psi Sigma, Agriculture Club, Rural Life Club, and the E Club have chosen their presidents from the Class of ' 33. The Class also supplied the captains of the Football and Basket- ball teams. Our personal history as a class would only be an enumeration of many things that is common to any graduating class. We have gone through the V years striving to make the best of the situations that came into our career. f I If we have one claim to distinction, it is that we have learned the meaning Q ;• : of the invaluable word, comradship; comradship with our well trained faculty, L| . ' ii ■who have striven so hard to teach that we might learn; comradship with our ' j .• president, who has led us through our four years at Eastern; and comradship .1 I with our fellow students, whom we have learned to love. ' V ' s It is with a feeling of sadness that we bid goodbye to school days and to ■' yk Eastern, but it is the sincerest wish of every Senior that he may be able to carry on, guided by the spirit of Eastern so nobly set forth in our school song — Alma Mater. PRESIDENT CARVIS KINCAID VICE-PRESIDENT MARY EDMONDS BARNHILL CLASS SPONSOR MARY ELSTON SECRETARY T. C. McDANIEL TREASURER JU N IK m i • The MILESTONE Class of ' 34 The Junior Class will very soon close a successful run of three years on Broadway. This play was written and has been produced by members of the Eastern State Teachers College Company. Most of the members of the cast as well as most of those who have attended the many performances are from Kentucky. The play itself is a combination of light comedy which runs through the second act, and heavier drama which reaches its climax just preceding the curtain. The setting is modern; A co-education institution in Kentucky, from the fall of 1930 until the spring of 1933. The first act opens early in October with some seven hundred ambitious freshmen clamoring for recognition. Soon a president is chosen who proves incapable for leading a class of this kind, however the error is soon erased by the expert leadership of a second president. In athletics the boys far excel past records, and establish one long to be used as a goal. On the gridiron eleven fighting, courageous men ring down the curtain on an undeafted season, after contesting some of the strongest teams both in and out of Kentucky. On the hardwood the same flashing spirit prevails and finis is written across a page whereon no defeats have been recorded. The public is not to conclude that the girls have no part in the first act. One of the highest honors of the year is bestowed upon a girl of this fresh- man class who was chosen Miss Eastern and later at the Mountain Laurel Festival, Miss Eastern Kentucky. Aside from these extra-curricula activities, some of the highest scholastic honors of the year are awarded to its members. Despite the fact that the cast in the second act is reduced to approxi- mately one-third its original size, they turn to the succeeding freshmen with the we ' ll get them attitude. Under practically the same leaders the under-grads set about to establish themselves on the campus. Sophomores are into everything, around at all times offering helpful suggestions. They soon become known as the most persistent class in the college. Through picnics and parties its members come to know each other; this results in better organization, but the most successful and dazzling event of the act is the dance given by the cast. The third act begins the following September when the cast is again diminished. The former president resigns and a new one reigns over a class that faces many tasks; tasks that require thought and work, but the attitude with which these problems are faced is admirable. The three great issues are; backing the Milestone, chapel programs, and the climax, the Junior Prom. The chapel programs are unique, surpassing by far any other class pro- grams presented. The Prom, which is the social event of the year is being typical of this class — a success. After the crowning of the Prom Queen the couples dance under beautiful decorations to the exhilarating music of a good orchestra. The dance is ended; the curtain drawn; the Racketeers render an appreciative post- lude; the play is over. This gives a brief review of The Junior Class as seen from an orchestra seat. It is probably the best modern play with a college setting that has been produced, and the directors; Dr. Cuff, Dr. Herndon, and Mrs. Barnhill are to be congratulated for their excellent supervision. HERNDON CLASS SPONSOR LLOYD DYKES TREASURER ELIZABETH CLOUSE MITCHELL SECRETARY S®FH@ The MILESTONE ii ' ji Class of ' 35 We want to follow the custom established by other sophomore classes of 1 leaving some written record of our attainments and fulfilled ambitions. We will go further, however, and not only present but impress upon you the high- lights of the class of 1935. We came here on September IS, 1931, four hundred and fifteen strong. i ' i, Many were the chides and taunts we bore with no other consolation than the thought that we would be the Frosh of the school just one of our four years of college life. Back we came the next year. Not so many, perhaps, but still quite nota- bly inclined and varied in our abilities, ambitions, interests, and ideals. We were as one in our desire to make the class of 1935 one of the most prominent Eastern will ever offer. To suggest, guide, and make successful our ambitions, we turned to Sam Beckley, president; Homer Robbins, vice-president; Lloyd Dykes, treasurer; and Elizabeth Clause, secretary. It was the active parts, which members of this group took from the first that made others recognize the Sophomores as an outstanding class. We pre- sent our honors as proof, if such be necessary. We have not only furnished many to the football squad, but we have walked off with the Captainship in our clutches. We contributed basketball material to the varsity, offered the first coed editor of the Eastern Progress, and we have the president of the Y. M. C, A. in our midst. Our leadership has very capably rested with Dr. Thomas C. Herndon who so willingly and thoroughly put all his interests into seeing us through. Although we offer a great year ' s record of literary, athletic, and social success, we recognize and appreciate the help of others who share our achievements. Some of us are to launch into our teaching career. For others it is the end of their school life, but even then they plan to do their bit in the struggle for a better Kentucky. Others, too, are looking forward to graduation at the end of more years of college work. No matter which category we choose to place ourselves in, we will aim at the highest star and continue our climb. We have missed those who have left us and cheerfully welcomed all newcomers. Even though we may all separate to meet no more, we will never lose our happy memories of Eastern, and will hold her always as dear as our most cherished possession. A sacred burden is this thing life ye bear: Look on it, lift it, bear it solemnly, Stand up and walk beneath it steadfastly. Fail not for sorrow, falter not for sin; But onward, upward, till the goal ye win. — Frances Anne Kemble The MILESTONE EARL T. But, like all good things, our few days of peace soon came to an end when the campus and halls began to be swarmed with sophomores, juniors, and those abominable seniors! They were not content merely to look down upon us but even began plotting and conspiring against us, and before long we were creeping in and out side doors with wood-pecker tops. It was then that we had to suffer many indignities — but not for long, because our rebellious spirits were aroused and after the first few days we boldly used front entrances and discarded the tell-tale, maroon and white hats, our courage being in our great numbers. Yes, we were exceptional freshmen — we braved the paths where others feared to tread by defying the Mystic Six after only a few days of their tor- turesome executions. Among our other good qualities (other than the above exemplified courage! we may list initiative, for there are many freshmen who have become valuable assets to some of the various organizations; scholarship, there being four freshmen who made forty or more grade points; and school loyalty, for the freshmen have been faithful both to sport activities and the art produc- tions. We have been exceptional freshmen; we hope to be exceptional as sopho- mores, juniors, seniors, and citizens. As leaders toward this end we have chosen Walter Mavity, Somerset, president; Harvey Chenault, Richmond, vice-president; and Frances Hanna, Shelbyville, secretary-treasurer. The MILESTONE Varsity Football The Eastern football squad of 1932 made its season the most successful in five years. Throughout the entire season the team kept up a fighting spirit unequaled by that of any opponent showing excellent cooperation in every combat. With such a team Coach Turkey Hughes, head athletic mentor, and Big Tom Samuels, line coach, were able to build up a team with which no other team in the South could compete. Only during the first four minutes of the season when the Georgetown Tigers crossed the Maroons ' goal line was any opponent able to score against them. While expressing our appreciation of the team in general, we wish to mention Dowell as tackle, and Hinkle as guard, who showed unusual skill on the field and through their untiring efforts gained honorable mention on the all-state squad. Captain Ben Hord, quarterback, who ranked third in the state scoring contest also gaining the honor of being the first man Eastern has ever placed on the all-state squad. Ben, leading his men with an iron hand but cheering them on when they most needed encouragement, brought them through a spectacular season. Eastern is proud of the 1932 football squad which has given to its Alma Mater a coveted position on the grid. SEASON ' S RESULTS Eastern 6 Georgetown 7 Eastern 38 U. of L. It was very disappointing not to win any games but they displayed good teamwork and put up a real fight against the opposing teams. The yearlings were able to keep the Georgetown Cubs from scoring against them but they battled against defeat in their other combats. To have a winning football team next year. Eastern must depend upon the material found in the Freshman squad this year. Cover, Creenwall, Brown and others showed brilliant pros- spects toward taking their places on the varsity squad and giving to Eastern an honorable position in the Realm of Football . The MILESTONE SEASON ' S RESULTS Eastern Eastern Eastern Eastern Transylvania 19 Georgetown U. of L. 25 Centre 27 u The MILESTONE Varsity Basketball Although the Maroon basketeers did not win any state honors, we can still say they had a most successful season. Famous players, claiming Eastern as their Alma Mater, came back to meet the varsity team in one of the season. The J alumni fought hard but all in vain, for the Maroons at their ■M ' ' best were able to defeat their distinguished guests 29-23. jii In addition to this and one independent game. Eastern was ' able to take twelve of fourteen games with Kentucky college teams. The two games lost were dropped to Western. Those two games were probably the hardest fought of the season, Eastern gave all she had in spirit and teamwork but Western got the breaks for points. Although the Maroons were so unfortunate as to lose their first game in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Associa- tion tournament at Winchester, they were invited to attend the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament at Jackson, Mississippi — because of- their distinguished playing throughout the season. There, they were defeated 60 - 48 by Louisiana Normal, one of the strongest teams in the South. Captain Clifton Dowell, forward, Adams and Hord at guard positions, were outstanding players, not only in the state but also in the South. This honor could never have been attained without the help of McDaniel at center, Feeback, the other forward, and Little Hale, alternate guard. Never before have the students so loyally supported their team as they have this year, and they are proud of the victories won by the Maroons of ' 33. Numerous stars from leading high school quintets of last sea- son turned out for practice and from this number came those players who made up Eastern ' s most famous yearling team. The Baby Maroons went through the season with perfect attack, coupled with good defense and plenty of aggressive- ness, the factors which marked them as winners among other freshmen teams. Almost as much interest was manifested in the Baby Maroons as was shown the Eastern varsity. They were one of Ihe biggest power houses for scoring that any freshmen learn in the state has seen in several years. Even the freshmen five that won the state championship in 1930 did not have the scoring ability of this year ' s team. Big Jim Brown, forward, led the- individual scoring reco rd of the team but he accomplished this only through the help of his other teammates. Cover at center showed skill in his handling of the ball while Storms and Elza, guards, put up a real defense against the opposing teams. The freshmen brought to us, this year. Tommy Scott, one of the fastest little for- wards evers seen on Eastern ' s hardwood. Bright prospects are in store for the Big Maroons next year when the famous freshmen team of ' 33 shall take its place with the team.
