Guiding the team was quarterback Tommy Thompson, who completed 34 of 90 pass attempts for 45l yards. The main workhorse on the ground was fullback Gary Smyers, who gained 5l5 yards for third in 4A-5 rushing. Rounding out the backfield power was Les Griffin. An excellent defensive star was David Smith. Twice he earned the Ft. Worth Star- Telegram lineman of the week award. Handling the punting chores for the Highlanders was end John Hetherly, averaging 35.8 yards per punt. The show belonged almost entirely to Richland as they amassed 225 yards on the ground while leaving Hills with a minus I7 yards rushing. The only offense the Highlanders could muster occurred in the last half with end Jerry Miller and quarterback Tom Harmon piecing to- gether a small aerial display. Not only did Miller make some fine catches, but he also was a demon on defense.
