Q aasgg. FUUTBALL An Eastern eleven newly christened the Ramblers, concluded a heartbreaking season under the tutelage of Messrs. Kelly and Fox, heartbreaking because of the fine start the team made, only to slip when victory seemed within their grasp. As an indication of the fine team they were, the Ramblers defeated a favored Episcopal team, thus serving warning on their adversaries. The Tide then played one of the most difficult games of its schedule when it subdued Roosevelt on the Eastern field 7-O. Eddie Teague, fullback, went inside tackle to score the only touchdown of the game. Many football observers have said that Eastern looked more like a college team than one representing a high school, the night they played Central at Griffith Stadium. Unleashing a host of spinners, reverses and passes, the Ramblers marched down the field twice to register a final score of 'I4-6. Central with its spread forma- tion was always fighting, making this game the tops for thrills. In this contest, Herbie Adams blossomed forth as a star when he scored the first touchdown of the game. As a rest from the grueling Inter-High schedule given them, the Ramblers played Gonzaga, which scored one of the maior upsets of the year by beating us 6-0. This broke the streak of winning games. ln an effort to clear the record of this defeat, Eastern subdued a scrappy St. John's team. After this brief rest from Inter- High games, Eastern played an Anacostia team, which figured to be one of the obstacles in the Tide's march toward the championship. After a close game in which we lost the services of Eddie Teague for the remainder of the season, we conquered the Indians. The standings of the league now revealed Eastern in first place in the Eastern League but a defeat by Tech would put that school ahead. On a wind-swept McKinley field, the Ramblers were defeated by the score 16-0. Beaten, pushed back and back, the representatives of Eastern displayed so much courage and fight that the school was as proud of them as if they had won. So ended the 1941 football schedule. Defeated in the last game but never humbled.

BASKETBALL Eastern's Ramblers drove up to the very threshold of the championship in the '40-'41 season, only to be pushed back in the inter-high by Roosevelt, and later by Gonzaga in the Metropolitan. In his first year as coach, Mr. Phil Fox turned a group of boys, all inexperienced, except Capt. Moe Shulman, into ranking candidates for the title. Stressing smoothness in their ball handling, the Fox boys in Blue won 18 games, while losing only four. These were twice to Roosevelt and Gonzaga. Starting off with victories over outside schools at the beginning of the year, the Ramblers turned later to the high school teams, rolling over all competition until they came to their first game with Gonzaga, which they lost, 30-28. ln the course of time the tide rolled over Central, Anacostia, Wilson, Tech, and Calvin Coolidge, but it remained for Roosevelt to spoil our hopes of a perfect inter- high series. ln a game which was Roosevelt all the way, there simply were no excuses for the Ramblers, we went down to defeat. Rebounding from this blow, we continued our series without any further defeats. ln the finals we beat Tech badly and were ourselves kept away from the cup by another scrappy Roosevelt nine. To the new Coach should go peans of praise for the wonderful iob he did in bringing Eastern up to the brink of the title, even if they didn't cross it. lO4
