Q 5 ff' Ai 1 01.1, C lqgx.5' lsqis-D',,, if .Q PREPAREDNESS SHARING the contemporary spirit of prepared- ness in America are Eastern High's cadets. No more alert, energetic or patriotic an organization exists within the school. From a simple acquaint- ance with fundamentals of marching and drilling in army life, a cadet develops qualities leading to good citizenship as well as to a good cadet through the unselfish performance of duty, loy- alty to his regiment, school and country, respect for authority, obedience to commands and be- lief in promotion through competitive merit. Those students who have taken advantage of this opportunity have truly performed a service to their country as well as to themselves. PREPAREDNESS-FOR LIFE ENl.lSTlNG for three years in the ranks of Eastern High School, over two thousand students yearly train for successful, interesting, and happy lives. To be successful, one must have the skills and training, the knowledge and judgment that will fit one for the work or career he will later enter. These we have learned and increased through our studies. To find life interesting, one must not only be educated but able to contribute to society, and this attitude we have been able to develop through membership in one of the many activity or service groups within the school. Finally, to be happy, one must be socially well adjusted. No better training for this can have been acquired than through participation in Eastern's numerous clubs. A well-rounded per- sonality-a well developed life-these have been and will remain our goals. is fE X lv RN as Ns N x -S '1. 'W lllltl .msn Q-was K.,..- L. ,is ,ss IN SINCERE appreciation of his many years of friendly counsel and stimu- lating influence on the cadet corpsg of his capable direction of other spe- cialized activitiesp and of his many years of faithful and inspiring service as a teacher of history and economics, Punch and Judy of 1941 is loyally dedicated to Mr. H. D. Shorts. DEDIEATIUN Busily engaged in one of his many aclivifies and dulies, our dedicalee pauses momeniarily lo oblige the releniless pholographer. A L H Forever faifhful Oo the corps, Mr. Shorls is out Io give the cadets a profsssional once-over. THE PRINCIPAL congratulates the members of the graduation classes of Eastern High School for l94l upon the successful completion of their prescribed courses of study. He wishes them health, success and happi- ness in their chosen field of labor. He reminds them that never in the history of this country has the opportunity for service been so great as it is at the present time. He believes that they will profit by the ideals and traditions of the Eastern High School, and that they will remember that the greatest satisfaction in life is in service to others. NOT ONLY a happy life but a worthwhile life I wish you, Graduates of 1941. To make it so, bear in mind that what you send out in life comes back to you, as a boomerang, send forth love, kindness, happiness, and the same will return to you, send forth the opposite, and the same will come back to you. Such is the Law of Life. Freda Dorothy Egbert A SIMPLE tablet in beautiful St. Paul's refers to the cathedral's builder thus, lf you seek his monument, look about you. To see the real spirit of Eastern, you must do the same. And as you, too, go to ioin that great com- pany of Alumni, we wish you like Success, and a bountiful share of Health, Happiness, and Contentment through all the coming years. N. A. It says Three Years at Eastern High School with the Class of '41 . Now I come to think about it, I can't remember what has happened in the past three years. l'm going in to get my memory refreshed. Won't you ioin me? Well, here we are inside. lt's so dark I can't see anything except a blur on the screen. The picture is now more distinct, and I see it is a horde of frightened rookies frantically hunting their way through miles of cor- ridors, while upper classmen laugh and sell them tickets to ride on the elevator. I be-gin to recognize some of the faces. Some big husky athletes have pushed their way to the front. There are Harry Bordow and Bob Pieri, two of the newest recruits for the football team. But that scene is now out-shone by the bright lights of the highly successful Amateur and Fall Shows. The team of Laura Martin and Evelyn Lee, equipped with guitar and western songs, captivates the audience. Most of the other Freshmen seem to be too young and inexperienced to distinguish themselves further for a time. One thing which does impress them is the retirement of Miss Mary Jane Watts and the appointment of Miss Egbert to take her place. What is this blank space now occurring? It must indicate summer vacation. However, it seems very brief, for Schulman, Manilli, Lieb, and many others soon to be star athletes are getting in training. In fact, they are already proving their worth. Eastern's shows a-gain blot out every- thing in their blaze of talent. Gertrude Rubin and Mary Spielman lift their voices in song, while Benny Dement proves himself a capable master of ceremonies. Soft strains of music are wafted through the theater and I see a colorful scene which is the Junior Prom, which has been engineered by several energetic Juniors. Static interrupts this pleasant vision, and I see Lila Tobiasen and Buddy Marmo helping to stage a radio broadcast commemorating Eastern's 50th anniversary. The Spring Show now re- veals some potential actors-Knouf Sively, Leon Rouff, and Beniamin Williamowsky. This year ends in a burst of -glory, when many members of the class earn medals for scholastic achievement and David Rhodes is chosen the outstanding Junior. A blank space similar to the first now occurs. It must be vacation time again. However, the year starts off with a bang with Mr. Danowsky 64 as the new assistant principal and many fellow-classmates, now Seniors, at the head of school organizations. Franklin Koontz is president of the Bank, Carl Jones leads the Student Council in its dealings with school affairs, Bond Holford heads the Pan-Hellenic Council, William Hogue edits that source of news, the Easterner , David Goldstein works to make the Punch and Judy a success. A wealth of talent again steals the scene as Patricia Comingore, Benny Dement, Mary Spielman, and George Younger with his orchestra step onto the stage in the annual Fall Show. The Amateur Show, with Noble Barnes and his band con- vulsing the audience, is equally successful. The highlight of the football season is Eastern's first night game with Central at Griffith Stadium. Through this passing parade the cadets can be heard drilling diligently and now they come into view. There is David Rhodes in command, bring- ing the colonelcy to Eastern for the first time in 13 years. With him are Lieutenant Colonel Buddy Marmo, leader of the cadet band, Noble Barnes, and more than a score of other commissioned Seniors. But the basketball season now looms in the near future. Eastern's Five attains a place in the inter-high finals and the Star Tourney. Moe Schulman is picked for the inter-high basketball team. Again a dance is flashed on the screen. This time it is a Senior Prom for the February Class. There is also a Class Night which is surprising in producing talent. Jessie Roberts, Frances Hurst, and Gertrude Rubin are three of the star performers. The play presented, Who Gets the Car Tonight , is a parallel to almost everyone's family car troubles. But what is that iumble of sound? It is coming from a radio studio. Eastern is again putting on a radio program, this time about George Washington, with Emily Thour, Virginia Nalls, and David Rundle among the many Seniors taking part. A figure in khaki now marches across the screen. lt is Mr. C. W. Hart, an Eastern English teacher and the first Washington high school teacher to be drafted into the army. In harmony with this are the pictures of the Regimental and Battalion Drills held this year in Eastern's stadium. Next, the faces of sev- eral Seniors come into focus. There are James Huddleston, receiver of the Civitan Award, Margaret Douthat, best citizen of Eastern, Rene Honey and David Rhodes, winners of the George Washington University schol- arships, Buddy Marmo and Mary Spielman, the boy and girl most likely to succeed. Then in rapid succession for the Seniors are the Senior Prom, Ihe Class Dinner, and-Graduation! 65 FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVENIENT IN THEIR WORK A real aptitude and diligent practice in vocal and instrumental music have made Mary Spielman the outstanding music student. 'Ir George Munson, as the outstanding mechanical drawing student, has shown ex- ceptional precision, artistic ability, and reliability. i' Hard work and a real appreciation for a fine romance language have made Wil- liam Hogue this year's outstanding French student. 'Ir John Hudson seems to be one ot those people who are trying to establish friendly relations with South America, because he has been chosen as a conscientious, top- ranking Spanish student. ir Speed, exact work and perseverance have boosted Bernard Backover to the top of the transcription ladder, and hard work and reliability with special aptitude have made him the year's finest bookkeeping student. THE FACULTY CHOOSES FOR HONORABLE MENTION So close was the contest for the highest of art honors a dead heat was declared. Dual holders of this envious position are Jane Auer and Lila Tobiasen, the cream ofthe art field. 'lr By intelligent thinking, hard work, and perseverance, Anthony Marmo has won the high and coveted award, the Rensselaer medal for top honors in science and in mathematics. ir Latin is not a dead language for Margaret Douthat. She has proven herself so interested and dependable that the high- est notch in Latin Achievement is hers. ir A fine eye for details and exceptional precision have tied Harold Anderson and Francis Keller for highest place among art metalists. Joe Parker's prescription for success in German is no secret. He is conscientious, consistent and dependable. GOLD MEDAL STUDENTS Bernard Backover, Tina Capossela, Doroihy Cook, Margaret Douthai, Harold Dubin, Louis Garner, David Goldstein, Rene Honey, Thomas Hollihan, James Huddlesion, Alvin Kabik, Ardis Kitchen, Anihony N II J h Parker, Elaine Peirakis, David Rhodes Marmo, Moizelle Massen, Doris Miller, Virginia a s, osep , Mary Spielman, Lila Tobiasen. FUUTBALL An Eastern eleven newly christened the Ramblers, concluded a heartbreaking season under the tutelage of Messrs. Kelly and Fox, heartbreaking because of the fine start the team made, only to slip when victory seemed within their grasp. As an indication of the fine team they were, the Ramblers defeated a favored Episcopal team, thus serving warning on their adversaries. The Tide then played one of the most difficult games of its schedule when it subdued Roosevelt on the Eastern field 7-O. Eddie Teague, fullback, went inside tackle to score the only touchdown of the game. Many football observers have said that Eastern looked more like a college team than one representing a high school, the night they played Central at Griffith Stadium. Unleashing a host of spinners, reverses and passes, the Ramblers marched down the field twice to register a final score of 'I4-6. Central with its spread forma- tion was always fighting, making this game the tops for thrills. In this contest, Herbie Adams blossomed forth as a star when he scored the first touchdown of the game. As a rest from the grueling Inter-High schedule given them, the Ramblers played Gonzaga, which scored one of the maior upsets of the year by beating us 6-0. This broke the streak of winning games. ln an effort to clear the record of this defeat, Eastern subdued a scrappy St. John's team. After this brief rest from Inter- High games, Eastern played an Anacostia team, which figured to be one of the obstacles in the Tide's march toward the championship. After a close game in which we lost the services of Eddie Teague for the remainder of the season, we conquered the Indians. The standings of the league now revealed Eastern in first place in the Eastern League but a defeat by Tech would put that school ahead. On a wind-swept McKinley field, the Ramblers were defeated by the score 16-0. Beaten, pushed back and back, the representatives of Eastern displayed so much courage and fight that the school was as proud of them as if they had won. So ended the 1941 football schedule. Defeated in the last game but never humbled. . I BASKETBALL Eastern's Ramblers drove up to the very threshold of the championship in the '40-'41 season, only to be pushed back in the inter-high by Roosevelt, and later by Gonzaga in the Metropolitan. In his first year as coach, Mr. Phil Fox turned a group of boys, all inexperienced, except Capt. Moe Shulman, into ranking candidates for the title. Stressing smoothness in their ball handling, the Fox boys in Blue won 18 games, while losing only four. These were twice to Roosevelt and Gonzaga. Starting off with victories over outside schools at the beginning of the year, the Ramblers turned later to the high school teams, rolling over all competition until they came to their first game with Gonzaga, which they lost, 30-28. ln the course of time the tide rolled over Central, Anacostia, Wilson, Tech, and Calvin Coolidge, but it remained for Roosevelt to spoil our hopes of a perfect inter- high series. ln a game which was Roosevelt all the way, there simply were no excuses for the Ramblers, we went down to defeat. Rebounding from this blow, we continued our series without any further defeats. ln the finals we beat Tech badly and were ourselves kept away from the cup by another scrappy Roosevelt nine. To the new Coach should go peans of praise for the wonderful iob he did in bringing Eastern up to the brink of the title, even if they didn't cross it. lO4 BASEBALL Always the bridesmaid, but never the bride. Eastern could change this around and say for the past two years, Always the runner-up but never the champ. Old Charley Guyon, dean of high school baseball coaches, is out to break the iinx wide open this year. He's either going to capture the crown or bust trying. Boasting a pitching staff as good as any, Eastern will have nothing to fear in the way of losing games because of poor hurling. Kenny Deavers and his friend, Kenny Curles, are the foundations for the hopes of the Chief for the league pen- nant this year, but facing the Ramblers will be strong Central and Tech nines, out to do their best to turn our dreams for the Crown into a nightmare. 2 L, ' si, C E l S 105 TRACK Eastern's 1941 track team, headed by Captain Monty Simmons, will undertake to recapture its title this year, with a fine consignment of track material. ln the field the Ramblers will have their strongest threats for points. Francis Manilli and Harry Leland have the situation of discus throwing well in hand. Bob Pieri will be out to secure points in the shot put, while Brown's iavelin throwing will do its bit for boost- ing the score. Coach Kelly instigated an intra-school track team this year and was well rewarded by securing a goodly number of potential runners. He will not be too surprised if Eastern flings up its heels at all competition and scurries home with the lnter-High crown. r -' ' 106 i M W as KELLEY GUYON FOX Rome had its triumvirate to make it great, but Eastern has iust three normal meng that is, normal in every respect but in their gift of turning outa winning team every time. It is as indefinable as is the term devotion or loyalty. When one possesses it, however, he can mistake it for nothing else. lt is that indefinable and intangible something that makes one feel that his school, no matter how small or humble, possesses qualities over and above those possessed by or belonging to any other institution. lt is the thing that makes him feel that his school's traditions are best and that its interests are his special, individual and constant responsibility. lf his school makes mistakes, he justifies them iust as a father justifies the error of his child. He is proud of his school. He is never ashamed of it. He is ready to fight for it and to do anything within reason for it. lt is this firm faith and devotion that so often expresses itself in the form of outward enthusiasm. A pupil without this school spirit is in the wrong school. He is entitled ,if possible, to be associated with an institution which can command his constant and unceasing service and de- votion.
