FOOTBALL REVIEW Although the record for the 1946 football season was not too impressive it did not tell the whole story. We had a fighting team, but the breaks did not seem destined to fall on our side of the fence this year. The squad first traveled to Saginaw where they ran into a light but very fast and experienced group of boys from Arthur Hill, who flashed a mid- season form and beat our boys 32-O. The following Friday night the team made an impressive debut on their home field by defeating Owosso 7-6. While the line held the shifty Owosso backs to one touchdown, Rolly Lewis combined speed and endurance to score our only touchdown. He then took the ball and bulldozed over the goal line for the winning point. On the succeeding Friday the boys went to Jackson to open the 5-A league schedule. Jackson scored first, but the Quakers finally got rolling and with some fine passing by Doug McKim and outstanding line play by Bob Nagel the Easternites settled for a 13-13 tie. Next Battle Creek came to Lansing for our second 5-A league game. The Quakers advanced the ball freely at mid-field, but were stopped several times within the Bearcats' ten yard line. Again it was the same story as the previous week and the game ended in a 6-6 deadlock. A non-league game with Benton Harbor was next on the schedule. However, the Quakers still were not getting their share of the breaks and had to settle for another tie, this time 6-6. Seeking their First 5-A league victory, the team next encountered the Pioneers of Ann Arbor. The Quakers, after fighting in vain to break into the win column, gave a hard fought 13-7 decision to the Ann Arbor team. It was impossible to pick the winner of this contest until the final gun went off, because the team was pressing the Pioneers every play. In this battle the services of Roland Stanley were lost for the year, as he broke his collar bone. For the first time in the history of the school our Eastern Athletic squad went out of the state to play Goshen, Indiana. With the second string playing most of the game the Hoosier passing attack could not be stopped and Goshen won 27-0. To climax the season the Quakers met their cross-town rivals, Sexton, for the city title. The Big Reds had an impressive record with 7 wins in 7 games, while Eastern had l win and 3 ties in 7 games. Eastern was now without the services of two regulars as Gordy Trowbridge was injured in the Goshen game. Sexton scored three touchdowns, two of which were set up by Quaker mis-ques. Eastern scored a touchdown on a long pass from McKim to Hethorn but the play was called back because of a holding penalty. The whole Eastern squad played hard the entire game with the defensive play of Walter Lander standing out, but the well balanced power of the Big Red attack paid off and Sexton won 18-0. Now, as we look back over the record of the team, we see that the season was not as dismal as was expected. Also we lind that out of the squad several of the boys will be back next fall for another crack at their league foes. Take a tip from your old friend Bud and he says, Watch out you-all, be- cause those old Quakers are going places next fall. By Bud Lawrence. Page One Hundred Twenty
