WN: fyfa THE ECHO Eastern High School Baltimore, Maryland 21218 Vol. 57 E ERLASTI G I will always remember North Campus in the morning-waiting for your friends to get to school, also check- ing out the dudes going to city. I will also remember cutting class and running from jack and Christy. I had to carry cut cards to make sure I went to class. The person I will always remember is Mrs. Offerg she used to run me to class . The food wasn't perfect but ate it anyway while we talked. Running down the hall to go to lunch is something else I will always remember We matured, learned to ac- cept responsibility for our edu- cation and ourselves, and earned the proudest memory: Graduation Semors canon . , -1 Q . Activities for this year were the Blood Donor Assembly and Day, Red Cross Spring Fair, working with elderly people, going to Rosewood State Hospital, and promoting the use of Sign Language at Eastern. This club has 17 members and meets on the 1st, 3rd, 8 4th Tuesdays. Its officers are R. Royster fPres.j, R. Woods Nice-Pres.j, and B. Nathaniel fNews Reporterj . Activities planned for the year were decorating a ward of Springfield Hospital Center, offering entertainment and refresh- ments to a hospital, contacting civic and church groups to encourage them to visit with people in hospitals on a regular basis, and developing a work experience program between Eastern and a mental health facility. The purpose of both of these 'clubs sponsored by Mrs. R. Lee is to get youth involved in aiding the mentally ill, 1:he elderly, the handicapped, the deaf, the blind, and teenagers in need of help. The members do this work on a volunteer basis. The goal of both clubs is to reach more students in helping to work in the fields mentioned above in our community and to better our society. 96 1 ',.,:- Y I - A ,V . LAND OF THE FREEg HOME OF TI-IE BRAVE Chrispus Attucks was the fi.rst man to die in the Boston Massacre. 'I'his was one of the events which led to the American Revolution. He was a black man, and served very well for his country on this day of March 5, 1770. After a long, hard war on July 4, 1776 , the United States was finally hee. The signing of the Declaration of In- dependence marks the date of om' country s Bicentennial. This started the birth of a new nation. - In the year 1812, there was another war for independence. It was called the War of 1812. This war led to the Battle of Baltimore, which was the British's attack on Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. The Battle of Balti- more encourage the writing of The Star Spangled Banner, which was written by Francis Scott Key. This poem he wrote on the deck of the British Ship tells how he saw the American Flag still flying after a night of bombard- ment. Thie poem later became our National Anthem. On August 1st, 1831, Nat Turner planned for his day of deliverance. Later, on August 21st, he finally had his day of revenge on all white people. He rode into town and killed a lot of people, just the way they treated his own k.ind. This day became well known as Nat Turner's Day of Deliverance. In 1844, the Eastern Female High School was established in Baltimore. This was the first all girl school. The Seneca Falls Convention in 1848, was the first Womn's Rights Convention. This was a big step for womanhood. It was around this time that there was slavery in the South. Harriet Tubman helped the escape of hundreds of slaves in the Underground Railroad. She was a fantastic black woman. From 1861 to 1865, the country was engaged in the Civil War. This was the war between the states over slav- ery. The South, led by General Lee, was for slavery, and the North, led by General Grant, was against slavery. After four long years, the North finally won. In 1864, the greatest black scientist ever was born. His name was George Washington Carver. He made hun- dreds of things from the peanut and the potato. He proved to us that anyone can do anything if they just 1:ry. In 1893, the lirst open heart surgery was performed. This was done by a black man named Daniel Hale Wil- liams. This was a big step for medicine and also a big step for black scientists. In 1896, the Supreme Court faced the PLESSEY VS, FERGERSON Case. 'I'his case was about a half black man not having equal rights. He was riding a train and sat in front of the car. At that time, black people had to sit in the back car. Plessey refused and was arrested and had to stand trial. This case was based on the Separate But Equal theory. Plessey was found guilty because he did not go to the back when told to. In 1898, the blowing up of the ship called the Maine, triggered the Spanish American War. The ship was outside Cuba when the ship was mysteriously blown up. On April 14, 1908, Matthew A . Henson helped in the discovery of the North Pole . Without this black man's help, it might never have been discovered. Another big step for blacks was the founding of the NAACP fNationa1 Association for the Advancement of Colored Peoplej, in the year 1909. 1917 to 1918 was the United States engagement in World War I. This the first of two wars. 118 bil? 1920, after a long hard struggle, women were finally allowed to vote. This was a big step for Women's Li rs. The first sound Motion Picture was in 1927. The Talldes started off a big with the movie called The jan Singer . The Stock Market Crash ended the roaring twenties with a bang in 1929, and started the thirities with the GREAT DEPRESSION . This was a terrible time for all. Many jobless people were raomaing the streets. The Depression ended with the start of World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941, entered the United States intc World War II, in 1942. The Erst man to discover the blood plasma was a black man named Charles Drew, in 1942. This was another big step for modern medicine . Alaska was added to the Union in 1958, making it 49 states and Hawaii in 1959, making it 50 states, which we have now. After President Kennedy's wished, thanks to all, the irst man on the moon was in 1969. A big step in astronom . The gist President to resign, was Richard M. Nixon, in 1973. America was had a very interest 200 years and on July 4th, we will have our 200th birthday. Happy Birthday to All.
