It moy, however, suggest the noture ond events which give this closs its specicil grace. gTfLc-Lgegrnest effort, the lively fun, the loeoutiful troditions, ond the hoppy fellowship-these ore the elements thot, like the sound in the shell, produce on ECHO. W Even before school opens in the fall, a faculty committee has wrestled with the triple problems of teacher replacements, faculty assignments, and pupil schedules, not to mention the question of which closet to hide the last 100 entrants in. During opening days, the staff meets, and sophomores, H50 strong, come shyly in for orientation. As soon cus the first closses meet, there is chonge. This is the yeor of the Supreme Court decision bonning proyer in public schools, ond o new order for opening the oloy quickly becomes routine. l Early in the fall comes the first in a series of traditional assemblies, inaugura- tion of Student Council officers. Each girl makes her serious, hopeful-of-a-better-year speech calling for better traffic movement, better cafeteria arrangements, better cooperation, and better student self-gov- ernment. ln a matter of weeks comes senior inaugural with more oaths and more speeches as the senior officers also look forward to a wonderful year. This time a special fervor marks the singing of the senior song, Standing proudly on the hill- side, she's a friend of youth . . . Li Winter has settled in, spring is, indeed, far behind as students return to face quarterly tests, term papers, and semester's end. The emphasis is now on work. Seniors restlessly watch the mail al- though it will be months before the last word on college acceptances will be in. The days drag. Will there be a snow day? Happy thought! Looking for breaks in the monotony, publications workers plan their trip to Columbia, iuniors get their rings, and sophomores-complete now with officers, banner, motto, and song-re- hearse their play. Basketball replaces speedball as a team sport. But the days drag. Suddenly, the light hours lengthen, and the end of the year approaches with a rush. There is much to do and little time. Prom, farewell assembly, a.nd graduation are here. In a flurry of emotion, under- classmen weep and reioice alternately as the seniors leave, and the iuniors move into the position of leadership. In June the school will seem strangely shrunken, the cafeteria' empty, the halls quiet, the atmosphere dreamy. The end for 1964 has come, and all those lovely, long, exciting days and months and years-where are they? They are the memories which make the ECHO. T Q Q f ! Hers is the job of seeing to it that all homeroom teachers understand the meaning of aggregate attendance and put the right signs and symbols in the right little squares to be duly counted, totaled, and added to other figures each month. In addition, she guides the Student Council in its effort to achieve 3300 happily self- governed students, stands firmly for maintaining at all times the highest standards CEastern's, of coursel and now and then illuminates a meeting or a conversation with flashes of wit. Administration The notices for the day-. The notices tor a day may include a rundown of club meetings, class affairs, student council business, Banner pleas, or a special directive on anything from sugar lumps to opening exercises. More important duties claim much of Mr. Bader's time. Suddenly, how- ever, in late spring, there will be a last announce- ment, and seniors will suffer a slight pang as they realize they will hear, This is the end of the morn- ing notices, no more. ' ' Steers Eastern on Smooth Course Miss Olga V. Bawden, Vice 9 cold snowy A strong voice on the PA, a friendly smile in the hall, and a Cadillac on the parking lot are symbols of Miss Bawden, most recent arrival in the office occupied by three different vice- principals in the past three years. Change and tradition being important aspects of their life at school, seniors take both in stride and consider themselves lucky to have known them all. Varied Talents Mrs. Alice Hess Adviser' Between adviser and class a chemistry develops that is part parent-child, part teacher-pupil, but larger than either. With nudges, with pats of pride, with scoldings, and with sweet reason, Mrs. Alice Hess has urged, applauded, and argued her class through its swaddling stages into the role of school leaders. Looking back on these years, members may well remember her dressed up and sparkling in the receiving line at iunior prom or hair pushed aside sitting on the floor sewing a hem behind stage for Our Town. Whatever the picture one recalls, there has never been doubt in anyone's mind that her intelligence, her interest, and her warmest feelings have belonged to the class of 1964. , O Class Miss Kathleen Powers Counselor Mrs. Sarah Cooper Echo Adviser Mr. Glenn Bunch Music Adviser Miss Mildred Arnold Financial Adviser Mrs. Julia Woodward Assistant Adviser Miss Alta Burroughs Counselor Mrs. Virginia Hoskins Art Adviser Mr. Lawrence Freeman Drczmafics Adviser Mrs. Rosemary Beckman Echo Subscription Adviser Mr. Glenn Bunch and Mrs. Ruth Moyer. No assembly, no class meeting is complete with- out some singing for which the department has prepared. Special groups, the choruses, hold forth on special occasions. The orchestra plays audiences in and out ofthe auditorium and takes the stage for a spring concert. If music is not exactly the core subiect, it is certainly an integral part of school activities. Some are the gifted ones, some are merry. The class of 1964 was articulate, perhaps even argumentative. Tell them they could not engage in such a program, produce such a play, wear such a costume, adopt such a proiect, and their immediate reaction was BUT . . . Innovation did not frighten them, tradition did not bind them, and dis- cussion did not silence them. Hence they blazed new trails in various directions. Their iunior play was a Greek tragedy minus old-fashioned costumes and elaborate scen- ery. Their senior play in- cluded boys. They considered the question of cheating, a growing problem in all large schools, and adopted the use of an honor pledge for tests. They clung tenaciously to caps and gowns for grad- uation. They banned the use of fake advertising in their yearbook at the same time as they tried to give it a fresh look. They ioined movements, sang folk songs, cared for an orphan, pitied their teachers, and talked endlessly. As the closing days drew near, they restlessly chafed, awaiting the culmination, looking for- ward to college, to marriage, to iobs, to independence. From President John F. Kennedy's acceptance of the Democratic nomin- ation speech, 1960: My call is to the young in heart, regardless of age-to the stout in spirit, regardless of party-to all who respond to the scriptural call: 'Be strong and of good courageg be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed'. John Fitzgerald Kennedy 35th President ofthe United States Born: May 29, 1917 Died: November 22, 1963 Mr.. Bader at the opening of school on Tuesday, November 26, 1963: It seems a long time since I announced to the school that the President had been killed in Dallas. We have returned to school after the most solemn weekend this nation has experienced in my lifetime and certainly in yours. At this time, all of us are so emotionally drained that any observance of ours would seem anti-climactic. The political and international aspects of this senseless tragedy have been the subiect of end- less analysis by the ablest experts in the land, we have seen the bereaved widow and her chil- dren, as well as other members of the dead President's family, on the television screen and have heard the eulogies of his friends. lf, after all this, there are any so dull and insensitive that they cannot understand what a loss the family, the nation, and the world have sus- tained, there is little that we can do to bring these realizations home to them. And yet something must be said. This cannot be iust another day in the life of the school. For the fourth time, an assassin has struck down a President of the United States, for the fourth time, a little man has arrogated to himself the right to act as God and has sent on its way a bullet that destroyed in a split second a personal- ity produced by millions of years of fortunate heredity and refined by a lifetime-a pitifully brief lifetime-of zestful study and awareness. lronically, the lallegedl assassin appears to have been a member of the extreme left-the political group that espouses the most complete freedom and democracy. Yet, because he did not want Mr. Kennedy to be President any longer, he fired the shot that nullified the ballots of 45,000,000 of us who had chosen him. We have lost a leader of surpassing ability, a man of great intelligence, resourcefulness, and courage. Without these qualities, he would have perished twenty years ago, in the second World War. Without them, he would have been defeated in the election of I960. Without them, he would not have earned the respect of the great men of the earth who accompanied him to Arlington yesterday in unprecedented numbers. President Kennedy was also a loving husband and father, but I shall not speak of his family's personal loss. It was no greater and no less than that of any family that loses, without warning, a loved member-no greater, for example, than the loss suffered by the family of Officer Tippett, who died as a sequel to the President's assassination. The only difference is that most are permitted to endure their grief in decent privacy and that few could have endured it with the fortitude displayed by Mrs. Kennedy. No country can lose a man of President Ken- nedy's stature and not be poorer as a result. But such a loss, though a serious blow, is not a mortal one. We are not, as a Congressman has suggested, a banana republic, where political decisions are arrived at through violence as often as not. The law of the land has functioned and another good and able mani has become President. As I write, I hear on the radio that in the midst of his grief and shock he has taken statesmanlike advantage of the presence in Washington of the governors of most of the states and of the high executives of foreign countries- that he has conferred with therh, and the results of the conferences are good. And so the work of the Presidency goes on. In fact, it has never stopped. Ever since he took the oath of office on Friday, President Johnson has been contending with the problems of his new office. Today the work of the Nation, in- cluding Eastern High School, resumes at the point where it stopped when the tragedy occurred. I have asked Mr. Bunch to lead the school in the opening exercises this morning. After we recite the pledge to the flag and sing a stanza of the Star Spangled Banner, please remain standing in silence for a brief period out of respect to the memory of the dead President. ,-, an w- ADVERTISING 5 i 1' W A ,L ., . -..,:. .
